    The creator of the June oven is an alumni of the same computer engineering college as me. He once did a guest seminar which I attended. He did at one point work at Apple and basically created the first handful of iphones camera system. Crazy you point out the Apple influence immediately. Also interesting why potentially the June oven has such focus on using a camera. And he seemed like genuine nice and cool guy.

    My GE microwave from 2005 finally crapped out. At first th-cam.com/users/postUgkxO_Bc204MGjxDl87cOKcdgaRhzSqGmv_g I was unsure because I was looking for something with the exact same features. Found it with this one. Interior space cavity was large, but the outside was smaller than my old one. I love the one-button push for 1-6 minutes, and the 30 second add or 30 second start. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I love how you can adjust the power level during cooking. The reviews said it could not be done, but this marked all the other boxes. and happy to say, it does. I can hit 1 minute start, and change the power level from 10 to 5, 30 seconds in, without interruption. my favorite feature!

    Chris, as a longtime June Oven owner, I agree with everything you said here. It's indispensible to me at this stage, but it's hardly a hands-off cooking experience. Easier, yes. I think there are two things you left out here - first, the camera recognizing the food is pretty amazing and works well. Nothing else I know of does this. On the downside, keeping it clean is tough, especially with the heating elements exposed and fragile. My first unit came and the glass heating elements were shattered in transit. The company was great about a replacement and is very responsive. I wonder if June could integrate with the Combustion Thermometer more since both are app controlled. Thanks for a great review.

    I love the June’s ability to make good-enough salmon with near-zero effort. When my wife was pregnant, she wanted to eat salmon everyday to help the baby get more Omega-3. Unlike most devices, this looks like it is actually using the 'smart' features in substantive ways rather than just marketing. I have to admit I'm still extremely skeptical of the Internet-of-Crap, and I hope their security is better than what we can expect from most devices. I do wish it had analog controls instead of the touchscreen, especially since it seems redundant with the smartphone app. Touchscreens have their place, especially when well designed, but they don't belong everywhere, and tactile feedback is extremely useful. Not everything needs to be an iPhone.

    Hi Chris, loving the series and your wireless thermometer. I appreciated your talent since the old days of "In Search For Perfection." An absolute gem of a series still. TH-cam needs voices like you, Michael Polan and others.
    However I have one criticism about this oven series. Perhaps in the name of consistency, could you please test the same 2 items in all the ovens? i.e. pizza and roast chicken.
    This way it will be easier for viewers like me to tell them apart. For instance I wanted to know if the June would over-roast a chicken of same weight. But you made salmon instead. ☹️

It cost about $179.00 back then. It was perfect for my needs. I am having a very hard time finding something very similar that would fit on my size shelf. Also wondering if something can be repaired. My GE oven has a camera inside. They say they are working on a similar capability, I think they used the example of knowing when brownies are done cooking. The problem is the camera view is not as good as what you show here. So I wonder if they can get enough information from the camera to have bacon vision.
    Either way it’s cool that companies are working on this. Soon we will get dynamic cooking where the temperature changes during cooking instead of just sitting at one temperature for 2 hours. It could also switch between bake, broil, convection, and air fry.

    Thanks for the video. I have some questions: how does the energy consumption compare to a conventional oven? ie, could it be helpful to have a countertop oven additional to a conventional one only to save energy? Also, Why did you test it on salmon this time? Couldn't you also have done the Chicken?

    • @ChrisYoungCooks
      @ChrisYoungCooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I choose both recipes because they were the top, flagship recipes promoted by each oven’s respective app. Saturday’s video will provide more of a head to head performance comparison.
      As for energy consumption, it turns out both built-ins and countertops are similar. This is because the biggest source of heat loss-and thus increased power consumption-is actually water evaporating from your food. Depending on how much food you’re cooking, and how long you cook it for, up to 90% of every goes to evaporating water from the food as steam.

    The app recommends cooking salmon sheet pan in center of oven, not on the bottom rack like you showed here

  • @FiveBig
    @FiveBig ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Chris, something you said confuses me. perhaps I misunderstand something about hitting the dead center of the food. You said the salmon cooked in the June oven was slightly overcooked (medium rather than medium rare) because the June thermometer wasn't quite at the dead center of the salmon. It seems to me that if the Juno is aiming for a certain temperature inside the food where the thermometer is placed, if the salmon hits that temp but the thermometer is not quite at dead center, then the dead center should be cooler, and the salmon slightly undercooked. Am I missing something?

    • @ChrisYoungCooks
      @ChrisYoungCooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is a bit confusing. But was a bit of a long winded explanation. I believe the tip was actually angled slightly below center and the bottom of the fish was less cooked than the top since the program seems to rely on the top-elements to do most of the heating. So, upper part of fish more over cooked than lower part of fish.

    • @FiveBig
      @FiveBig ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisYoungCooks Thanks Chris, that makes sense. It seems like the June Oven algorithm was part of the problem. Good reason to get your predictive thermometer, which I ordered a week ago! I'm looking forward to trying it out. Appreciate the personal response. Impressive.

    As with my comment on the previous video, this oven has a massive glaring issue: data privacy. As cool as some of these features might be, and as good as updates to an appliance might be, I don't trust a company with data profiling. Remember how fitness trackers will scrape your data and _somehow_ that data ends up in the hands of insurance companies? It'll be the same situation here, except now for a whole household, based on oven data, network data, and data from a phone if it's ever connected to the same ecosystem; profiling users via psuedo-anonymous data isn't that hard. And considering everything passes through their own ecosystem of apps, it's not all that easy for a consumer to ensure their own data protection. There's still also the concern of abandonware, what happens when the company moves on or goes under, what happens when the apps eventually become prone to error, etc.; even better if the machine eventually becomes nonfunctional if it can't constantly ping the company's servers, y'know like we've seen with plenty of other live service software and hardware.
    Again, as I said in my comment on the previous video, an appliance needs to be a closed ecosystem with no access to the outside world; and sure, having a phone app is convenient, but it should only really be a few pings or a few functions sent through host and device within a home network with no connection from either side to the outside world.. That doesn't mean higher tech standards or OTA updates can't exist, but the tech industry's need of data farming is to the point of being literal spyware baked in as normal services into everything. I'd rather not have my countertop oven reporting on what I cook, I'd rather not have a smart fridge reporting on what I buy and store; what's next, a smart stock pot that can report on how salty a soup is? We all know where this data ends up, and we all know how this data is used against consumers in this capitalist hellscape. Lack of data privacy always leads to ill intent, and we all know how data sells, 'free' services aren't free when they're driven by the revenue that data provides. Data farming is one of the most anti-consumer practices possible, yet it drives our modern capitalist hellscape, and your average person won't realize the implications of it, especially when it comes to more sensitive data like health metrics.

      I agree the appliance has to work without the app. In 2019 I bought a treadmill with the ifit app capability. Worked great until January 2023. Ifit did a software update and rendered my treadmill useless. It took six months and $400 to resolve. I also have a litter-robot whose app capability failed this year. From watching TH-cam videos the litter-robot company updated to a software not compatible with my generation robot. So yeah, I'm very careful now when purchasing "smart" devices.
