    You can add the backlight keyboard by swapping the keyboard. The support is there just need to get the part from say eBay. Runs about 45 bucks

    Got a Dell e6410, looking to upgrade as I've done as much as possible... Max memory (a whole 8Gb - wow!), replacing the DVD-ROM drive with a second HDD caddy, backlit keyboard... however, even though it's done FANTASTICLY as a music production unit... Kind of hitting the limit to it now, been looking at the Lenovo as a replacement.

    I really like my T495. Battery life is vastly improved over the A485; 10+ hours vs. 3.5-ish. Had planned to hold out for Ice Lake but my dual core T460 was getting painful to use. Also, you can probably buy a backlit keyboard module cheap on Amazon and bolt it right in.

    Just put Pop!OS on my T470 yesterday on your recommendation, replacing a slightly sad Win10 install. Lovin it.

    Beauty tho of that being a ThinkPad is you can fit the backlight keyboard in minutes if you really miss it that much I always add it to mine 😁

    Can you test if you can control the fan speed please? Unfortunately I learned the hard way that lenovo feels standards like ACPI are optional :)

    How do you approach installing Linux on a system that comes with Windows? Do you erase the other system, or go for a dual boot? If you do erase Windows, do you still back it up somewhere, for example by dumping a disk image before installing Linux? I'm just curious as to what the best strategy would be.

    Nowadays usb-c is docking port in Thinkpads. There are many usc-c docking stations.

      One of the recommended ones is the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Second Gen dock ( support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500265 ), which works straight out of the box with some Linux distributions (eg Linux Mint 19).

    I dunno...I have a T-410...T-420...T-430..and T-460...and they ALL have worked with Linux after install. No issues with the touchpad or anything else...I guess maybe some of the ThinkPads have esoteric firmware...but all mine work just fine. I also run Pop-OS on one of them...its pretty cool.....but I'm a die-hard Fedora Linux user...LoL!

  • @TearTox
    @TearTox 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why didn't you get the T480? Maybe straight from the lenovo? They have had deals on it for a while now after the T490 has been released. The price difference to L480 is so small and you get thunderbolt 3, removable battery with better batterylife, backlit keyboard, better chassis etc.

  • @goommer
    @goommer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Best feature is USB type C thunderbolt and it holds up to 32GB of ram. Add an external GPU and its a beast.

    • @goommer
      @goommer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, wrong comment. I thought I read T480. That one holds 32GB of ram and thunderbolt. Anyway, the L model is still a great machine.

    Good review. What is their justification for putting 1.6ghz in there I wonder?

  • @0M9H4X_Neckbeard
    @0M9H4X_Neckbeard 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are definitely L480 models that do have a Backlit keyboard. Also, no ThinkPad after the x7x generation has the old Docking port on the bottom anymore, they all just use USB-C Thunderbolt docks now

    I have this laptop for work almost a year you cant add an ssd and nvme. You remove the 4g m. 2 card and add a second m. 2 ssd i found a 1tb ssd from transend the socket are 2242. And you change the toshiba m. 2 nvme with bigger one i added a 1tb 2280 and 1tb 2242. Also i added e 256gb cheap microsd card for movies on the go. Also i make it dual boot ubuntu18. 04 and win 10 works perfect. And if you buy the official docking choose the one with the 2 display port because it has a type c on it and you can add 3 monitors and extra 5 usb 3.1 with a cheap dongle from thord party. Excelent choice good battery and in use with an external power bank you have more than 20 hours portability.

    That page on Amazon must be wrong. I've never seen a 42mm Nvme ssd, I think it's just a regular sata drive. Not a big deal breaker but still.

    • @marinlos
      @marinlos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't matter. AMD and Intel are equally supported on Linux. They work flawlessly. It's a matter of preference which processor you will choose

  • @sitte24
    @sitte24 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Specs are nice, not too oversized as many tend to nowadays. Still I would have recommended you to go with the T- or X-series instead, just because the case feels much better and sturdier. Anyways Thinkpads are no bad decision, nowadays just not as good as in the good old IBM times

    The new X series machines like the Thinkpad X390 no longer have the hardware dock port underneath the machine...this is a huge disappointment as the hardware docks that use this port have always been uber reliable. Now they use the usb-c ports on the machine for the docking stations :'(
