    Thank you. I'm learning a few American fiddle tunes the violin teachers have chosen to have the teenagers play at string orchestra camp this summer. Looking through lots of videos, your lesson is a stand-out. Excellent teaching. Wishing you plenty of great sessions this summer!

    As an Irish Traditional player trying to learn Bluegrass. These simple arrangements are refreshing compared to all the overly complex tabs I tend to find elsewhere.

    I've been enjoying playing this this tune lately on my hammered dulcimer! Now I'll have to share this video with my brother who's a mandolinist!

      Awesome! Hammered dulcimer is so fun! Would make a great duo with a mandolin I bet!

    Hey David, thanks very much for showing us all the lower octave notes and tabs for this truly fabulous tune. First time I heard it it blew my socks off, and the weather was cold, so I had to go grab a new pair of socks. This is a welcome task to learn than just the higher octave,. Yummy stuff. Bob

      Haha! That's awesome Bob! Hope you enjoy that lower octave variation!

      @@DavidBenedictMandolin well, I copied down your tabs A part high, A part low for both parts, same for B parts. Man, it looks like a cool way to play this tune, but until I learn the tune well enough, it could get confusing. Good thing I don't have much else to do 'til spring gets here 'cept get my veg seeds started in late March Thanks again, Dave for a great project on my old Flatiron. Bob

    Excellent tutorial. Just really clear, moves along with a lot of information, not too slowly or quick. Thank you!

    For learning by ear, it’s nice if you just play through the tune once early in the video before breaking it down. Then we can try puzzle it out before getting instruction.

      Hey John! Thanks so much for watching this lesson-hope it was helpful. You can grab the full slower tempo melody recordings over on my Patreon page if you’re looking for some more learning resources for this tune.

    Great stuff David! I remember you playing at Northshore Fellowship. Glad to see you progressing and sharing your talent. I’m out west and hopefully catching a camp with Tristan scroggins. That’s how I found you. You guys both rock it!

    Very nice. I learned this tune (or maybe sorta learned it) ages ago, and never really played it with anyone in a jam. But I think I learned it with the C's played natural (which to me sounds a little different, but still sounds fine).

    • @DavidBenedictMandolin
      @DavidBenedictMandolin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great! Yeah, lots of different versions of this one!

    • @BluegillGreg
      @BluegillGreg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This version's in A Mixolydian. Did you maybe learn it in D Mixolydian? That would be like D Major except the c# would be dropped to c natural.

  • @ChrisSharp80
    @ChrisSharp80 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The song is in the key of D and the notes are the normal notes of the D major scale.

    The actual key is D. So, it begins on the V chord, etc...

  • @mistahcoughdrop
    @mistahcoughdrop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Maybe there's a secret language here... G natural for two # (sharps)? I'm missing something. Two sharps is D major, no? But great lesson, David.

    • @DavidBenedictMandolin
      @DavidBenedictMandolin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey mistahcoughdrop! How're things for you? And sorry we didn't go into too much detail on the mode v key thing in this video. You're right that this tune has the same key signature as D major, but since the chords and the melody are somewhat centered around an A major chord, it helps me to reframe the key as the A mixolydian mode--which has the exact same notes as D major, but starts and ends on the A note instead. Doesn't matter too much how you think about it though as long as you know what notes are in that key signature. Hope this helps! Glad you're digging these lessons!

      @@DavidBenedictMandolin David, they are brilliant, and yes I understand the A mixolyidian mode, yes! Thank you for responding. Paris is okay but we're still in a funk. Little music beyond the home these days. We'll see what the next few months bring. But thank you for these lessons. I'd like to send some dinero to you but more like a one time fee/donation... Instead of the monthly payment. Possible? If not I'll do the monthly.

      You can adjust the playback speed, faster or slower. Go to the little dots on your screen or if there is a wheel looking thing, click on it and you will see that you can change the playback speed. Personally I love it that he speaks fast. Otherwise I would have to speed him up!
