      Funny thing: because they "lumber" everywhere like that most of the time, many people think they are slow, but they can actually sprint between 18 and 25MPH depending on the monitor.

      Since this comment I've actually gotten some greenhorn reptile experience with a couple of really big rescues of outdoor sulcata tortoises, and those guys will surprise most speed-wise too lol. When it's feeding time, I gotta wear closed toe shoes or stand outside the enclosure less my toe be mistaken for a baby carrot or radish. Lol.

    "He can't go too far" Trusting. I have 2 Tegu lizards. One is super well behaved, no longer has to be on a leash after he gained my trust over the course of a year, I still make sure to stay close to him outside though. The other I thought I had his trust but as soon as I put him down without a leash he bolted. Chased him through the field (about the size you are in maybe a bit smaller) He had two choices, go down a big sewer drain in the side of a walkway or go under a car.... thankfully he chose under the car... he leapt up into the underside between the frame and the plastic cover to keep mud out. Luckily, a passerby helped me and pulled him by the tail (the think part) while to pushed his hands and feet off their grips... man hes strong. Also lucky the cars owner didn't come by, seeing two guys under his car he would of been like WTF maybe even called the police. But yeah after that hes never allowed off the leash again.

      That’s an adventure! Had similar case with this guy, silly me, I went upstairs for one second and he went for a stroll down our street, when I came downstairs, no sight of him in our front lawn, asked a lady with a dog, she says yup, saw big lizard going in the middle of the sidewalk, went there to find a car owner on his toes looking for me, we knew each other, boy got under the car like yours but only to catch some shade and let me just pick him up. Otherwise he was really always waiting and counting on a snack, that was my solution to the trust issue, bribery.

      They were cheap 20 years ago. You could buy a wild caught baby for $20. Nowadays, a lot of pet stores don't carry them much anymore because prices have gone up and more are being captive bred. Also, Petco and Petsmart have killed off a lot of the little shops and they don't carry monitors anymore.

    • @MrSzczyglowski
      @MrSzczyglowski  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Try and let him/her associate you with food. Let him fast few days and then Let him see you take the food out and then offer, preferably with forceps. Every time follow that. So before going out let him see the food go in the backpack or pocket, let him smell that place and let him see it's coming with you. Once you're in the park make sure there's nothing interesting or people around and start training. Let him walk away a little bit then start slowly move to the treat. Little moves, let him pay close attention to you. So later he will watch you lake a border collie. When he comes back to investigate, reward him with a treat and then observe how much harder it will be for him to leave you. He will but he'll keep an eye on you thinking of another treat. With time he will be like a weird dog.

      @@IckyStickyOils for babies I’d go with small/young live (moving, getting away) insects, worms, water. Also I’d have a frame to put on a lawn so he’s confined, plus some shade and water bowl. I’ve had two in my lifetime, I think they’re quite active during the day hours but sleep at night with full bellies. I think the shops go for least expensive way to keep stock alive hence eggs, youngsters generally don’t crack eggs but devour small prey items that easily fit in their mouths. Was he over weight? Look at wild savannahs and you’ll know. Overweighted specimens result from regular feeding and confinement. This one had neither; this one had to signal hunger which was irregular and I facilitated a search/hunt scenarios. I’ve pretty much always went out with him for walks whenever he wanted, that’s when he wanted to go to toilet during the day and have a bite to eat in a park either from me or what he found, varied diet, varied emptying. My goal from the start was have him roam free. Period. everything else, including my own schedule I aligned with him.
