Actually the Director Ramesh Sippy didn't want Amitabh die in end. Actually the orginal shoot was a happy ending but in the last moment they changed it. But it really proved a better ending. People are in tears when Amitabh dies. Such was the impact in those days. Great Film. Sholay.

Sholay would never have endured as long as it has if Jai had survived. Jai's sacrifice and the reveal of the trick coin is very very significant, moving and emotional. It makes you finally totally hate Gabbar and makes you want vengeance on behalf of Jai.
Consider at the end of the movie Mela, the spiritual recreation of Sholay, both brothers survive and the end is all feel good and lovey dovey. Yeah that movie didn't do as well did it. No real stakes for the audience to get invested it.
Tragedy is very important in story telling and shying away from telling emotionally moving stories is how we get these lacklustre, heartless failure of movies that pervade so much of cinema today.
You have to be willing to love the characters you create to show the audience their worth and you have to be willing to then kill the characters you love if you want the audience to feel the impact of the story and leave a lasting impression.

There are no Hindi film that comes close to Sholay in every respect. Cinematography, sound , action , star cast and dialogues. An epic film which can't be remade.

Consider that since the coin was always a trick coin, this means that Jai chose to go to prison with Veeru in order to save Thakur in train. He chose to go to Ramgadh to find Gabbar and he chose to die so that Veeru would live, leaving nothing up to chance. In the end every good decision they made seemingly out of chance was just Jai being a decent human being instead of just two criminals just allowing fate to decide their actions for them.
I'm sure no movie industry can remake or even make a movie like Sholay again. This was and will remain a masterpiece.

This Death scene wasn’t just about Amitabh, Dharmendra’s performance in it was equally outstanding, influential and the brilliant Jat made it memorable.

We watched so many movies, we actually came to know a lot of hindu words, and we eventually could sing along with the masters Muhammad Rafi Sahab, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle .... And we'd argue until very late in the night about which was the best movie, who was the best actor, the best singer,. And we had no worries and so little trepidation about the future. Good times!

İ would call the best Indian movie for 20th century and may be still the best. Fight were real, screen was great, music wonderful, actors talented. No gaps. This film was distinguished from other Indian movies of that time.

Guys...you should admire and appreciate RD Burman music during the fight...the slick camera work during hand to hand fight between Veeru and Gabbar...the punches thrown...the whole fight scene was directed by western fight composers...this is the Best one on one fight scene ever filmed in Indian Cinema..
no stupid slow motions...or 20 men trying to gag one man with chains and still failing like in Deewar..here in Sholay...two crazy men with hate and outrage just trying to eliminate the other...like two male African lions trying to tear apart the opponent. This is called Action and only our beloved Dharamji with his power packed physique would have done that. That is why Dharamji is still the He Man of our Film Industry.

Yes, Dharmendra is an admirable hero, especially in action scenes as he had that handsome, manly look & physique. (Who can forget his Opening Scene in Yaadon ki Baaraat where he would jump on the Train from a Bridge!) U have missed out to highlight the important scene in which RD Burnan's Background Scores stood out. It's a terrific scene where Sanjeev Kumar returns to see the dead bodies of all his near & dear ones (including that hapless little boy) in his family after having been gunned down by Gabbar Singh & his henchmen recklessly. Oh! It's a terrific scene and RDB's haunting Background Score created such a lasting impact. Even now, that scene does something in my subconscious mind & heart. An Unforgettable Scene indeed !
