Abbreviated Transcript:
00:15 The shaft is a straight forward piece of turning, but its worth noting that all of the cylindrical features must be concentric for it to work. The center holes on the shaft for the existing tool suggest it was turned between centers to achieve this result. I'm going to machine part of it between centers, but I'll machine the taper while holding it in a collet. So starting with a piece of mild steel, I prepared it for turning between centers, by giving it a facing cut and center drilling each end.
00:55 To be honest, I find it more convenient to do this, than to take off the chuck to put in a center anyway, and since its turned in place, I know its right on the center line of the lathe. A lathe carrier was attached to the work, and the part set up for turning.
01:37 With the first cut marked out, I started the job of turning the profile to size. The fit with the main bore is quite nice,
so I'm calling that done. Next up is the taper, and for this I'm shifting to an ER collet to hold the part.
02:51 So this little Sherline drill arbor is my test subject, and it'll sit nicely in a collet while I copy its taper with an indicator. I set the compound over to roughly the correct angle, and then spent a bit of time tapping it into place, until it was travelling parallel to the taper in the chuck.
04:01 Now the only zero morse taper I have for testing the result, is the one sitting in the lathe, so I pulled it out of the tailstock body to make it a bit more convenient to hold, and used it as a gauge to check my progress.
04:30 The size is about right, but the surface finish could be better. So a quick touch with a mill file to smooth out the tool marks, and the fit is excellent. A light chamfer, and its done.
04:54 The steel shaft is a lot harder than the aluminium, so it will wear the bore a little over time, loosening the fit a tiny amount, but I don't think it will be a major issue. The next part of the tool to make is this handle.
05:07 It needs a thread cut on it so it can screw into the main tool body, so first up I faced the stock and then turned the end to the correct diameter for threading. I cut a little chamfer on the end to help start the thread,and used my existing die holder to hold the die.
06:07 The thread also needs a good undercut, so that the handle pulls down nicely into the main body of the tool. And lastly I reduced it to final length and gave it a general tidy up. The part was then flipped in the chuck, and the other end was given a clean up too.
06:53 I'm really enjoying using a graver to turn this sort of non critical stuff. They're so much fun to use, and probably quicker than messing around with a form tool to do the same cut.
07:22 I also decided to put in some ornamental grooves, just to pretty it up a little, and make it a bit more pleasant to hold. And thats the handle done. Were on the home stretch.
08:51 I can see the die is sitting quite steady as the thread is cut, and it does a much better job than the standard holder, of holding the die square to the work. Its got a nice light feel to it; I get a direct sense of how the thread is being cut, through the grip. I've got a lot of these screws to make, this tool is going to get plenty of use.

After that I got into restoring old lathes, work with them, and then sell them sometimes. Dear Clickspring, I recently discovered your channel and love your attention for details. Everything you make has to look good and feel good. I'm blessed, or cursed, with the same attitude on how things should be done. For me it's my bread and butter and discovered that clients like the same approach too. I'm an Industrial design engineer and became a machinist to prove the stuff I thought of. Great combination for me and my clients. So happy to meet you; I'm Job. I'm trying to watch anything you put on TH-cam and came across this video. It's almost 8 years old so probably my comments on this chapter are old news and you improved your engineerings skills above my suggestions since then. My suggestions, here we go; aluminium is light and strong and a terrible bearing material unfortunately. The wonderful aluminium body you made here acts like a bearing on the steel guide when tapping threads on the lathe. Therefore I would add some bronze bushings in the aluminium housing to act as a bearing. Furthermore; cutting a morse taper right is a little more complex than you showed. Use the Dycom fluid to determine the fit on the taper instead of filing and sanding until it feels right. I know, it will work, but I like these "how to do it right" details just like you. I am a programmer who meddles in electronics (I guess in part because I am being drawn closer towards physical creation that I can do in the real world with my hands) and have zero experience in machining, but I have found myself fascinated with it for the last year or so. Clickspring I can imagine that! Just after watching a couple of your videos I was online, checking mini lathe prices for umpteenth time, but, unfortunately (or, from the point of view of my girlfriend, I guess, very much fortunately :D), I was reminded how ridiculously expensive such tings are where I live (NE Europe, Latvia). So I will have to make due with lurking for some time more.
By the way, I have some vague understanding about how much extra time you must be spending on preparing the shots and all the editing to make the videos so well flowing - it is very much appreciated!

One small refinement to your tail-stock die holder. Consider spot facing, on the mill, the threaded hole where the handle meets the holder. this achieves two things, it will tidy up the interface between the two components and strengthen the joint between the components.

Nice! I’m thinking of making one for my gear head lathe but without a handle, I would use it under power and hand held. not having the die locked to the tail stock is a good I idea, and will save me time and parts.But making a hex cut in the center to use a wrench (1/8" spanner) for the hard stuff when needed, power off and spindle lock in that case.

You do beautiful work. Watched all of your videos that I could find. Excellent narration and presentation. One suggestion to simplify your work: chuck the hex bar you are using for a center close to the jaws. Put the bent tail dog ( I think you call it the carrier) on the workpiece, let the tail of the dog bear against the chuck jaw.

the coolest part about a lathe is making your own lathe tooling with it. the only reason I haven't bought a mini lathe is space won't allow for it.

As a hobby machinist I have to say I´m impressed with the quality of every single job you make. Outstanding finish.
If you accept suggestions about new videos, these are two of them I am looking forward to see in your channel:
- As I can see in your videos, you don´t use insert type of tooling but HSS shaped for the job. I am sure you are a master in the shaping technique since your tools in the videos cut as a hot knife in butter and with a beautiful finish, no matter the matreial you are cutting, so one video covering lathe bits shaping would be great (covering differences in angles for different materials/jobs).
- You are also a master in everything related to metal polish and surface finish. I know this is a complex world by itself, but a video displaying different techniques for differenat materials would also be great. I admire a lot how easy it looks in your videos to get that breautiful mirror finish (although I know that´s not so easy). I have a ton of questions related to that. hehehe.
Last but not least: Thank you very much for sharing your amazing job, they are awsome, amazing and very, very useful.

waw that mirror finish was... unexpected
the Die can be made at home with an old marking pen artline type not totally dyed up rip it up and you find a small felt like inner section grab it and toss it in A small second hand spice jar with a lid using a small amount of oxylen solvent you can get from Bunnings (wall mart we do not have wall mart yet in Australia but there are others you may need to play )
in OZ wash out the rest of the old marker and add all inn the jar // a small paint brush and remember to keep the lid on drys out real quick

As I find myself just spending the money required to buy the Sherline tail stock die holder I really like the premise of this video. I gotta tell you its Love/Hate though. There is no way I have the tools you have to make this and was really disappointed to find you made the part for the Sherline, but not using a Sherline to do it. So I Love the precision of your work and it is now my new standard to take my own skills to but I Hate that I couldn't make this type of part with the tooling I have.
Reckon you could skip the groove pattern and make the rest of it on the Sherline, just a bit easier to handle the Al body on a larger lathe.

Very nice work, takes far to much time to make, but be proud of the result., I made one using scrap aluminium and steel and mount het in my drilholder. one point dont use the handle! remove it and grip the body with your hand, you can power cut now safe. start the lathe grip the holder and push it again the workpiece. At the end loose grip and stop the latte reverse it and same action. This works save and give better results on the treath. I also made a few dye holders to fit in the main holder for different size dye , never tought using the back of the holder like you did .
