This black and white film tells the history of the Executive Mansion of the United States, the White House, and was likely made in the early 1960’s. Starting with its construction in 1800, we’re lead through some of the highlights of the Presidents and their families who lived there up through the 35th President, John F. Kennedy. Though bookended with footage of Washington D.C. and the White House interior, the majority (beginning at 03:33) the majority of this film is composed of still images of paintings, drawings, and photographs. Written by Amy L. Jansen, narrated by Phil Tonken, music by Filmsounds, Inc. A Jensen Production, Sterling Educational Film Release.
The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., and has been the residence of every US president since John Adams in 1800. The residence was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban in the neoclassical style and construction began in 1792. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Because of crowding within the Executive Mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901. By 1948, the residence's load-bearing exterior walls and internal wood beams were found to be close to failure. Under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame constructed inside the walls. Once the structural work was completed, the interior rooms were rebuilt. The modern-day White House complex includes the Executive Residence, West Wing, East Wing, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and Blair House, a guest residence.

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the White House 8 times, each visit as exciting as the first. It truly is the people’s house, and shows the best that this country has to offer. It struck me after a few times that the house isn’t as large as people assume. As I stood in the cross hall, facing the north entrance, I could look from left to right and see both exterior walls. I always wished I could have visited during the holidays to see it dressed up for Christmas. During the week between Christmas Day and New Years, there used to be evening candlelight tours for the public. I’m not sure if those are offered anymore, but it must be beautiful to see the mansion glowing in the evening. I doubt I’ll ever get to visit again since I’ve been trying to recover from cancer the last few years. But I still have the memory of being treated to a piece of cake on the occasion of the White House’s 200th birthday. If any of you have the chance to visit, it’s worth the effort to be there so early in the morning, it truly is a beautiful home.

John, I too love The Whie House and have visited it several times. I live near by and see it often. I DID get to tour The White House at Christmas many years ago before restrictions were inforced. Let me tell you the memory of it is one of my favorites. The Presidents small band played Christmas music and all was candle lit and mesmerizing. I still remember slowly strolling down a long corridor and as it turned towards the main floor I was stunned to look up and see the actual Presidential protrait of John Kennedy in contemplation right in front of me. I wasn't expecting it and I burst into tears. I cherish the memory. Just lovvely.
No cake for us but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
I recommend Dr. William Seale's two volumme book "The President's House". Of all the White House books I've read, his is the best. He was the White House historian for 40 years. It's the most comprehensive book on the subject.

@@martiniontherocks4026, I have to agree, the Kennedy portrait is one of the finest paintings in the White House. I’m envious that you were able to visit at night, I can just imagine how the mansion must have sparkled. One time, my husband and I took his parents to Washington. Our first full day was at the White House. His parents were very impressed. Matt’s mother told us that night, as she was sitting at the vanity doing her makeup for the evening, it struck her “I went to the White House today”. She said she never thought she’d be able to say that sentence. The following spring we were sitting with them in their kitchen and Matt’s dad said “I wish I could have just one more day there”. I started looking around and found a AAA charter day trip to D.C. You would be part of a group, fly out early, spend the day touring Washington on a coach bus, then fly back late the same night. I thought we could fly out with the group, take the shuttle into the city, see what we wanted to see, then be back at the airport before the charter group and fly home. It all worked perfectly. Matt’s dad was thrilled he got his extra day, and it was very inexpensive. We wish we had as much access to all the beautiful things you have, but forget the traffic.
This includes a lot more info than modern films I've seen on the Whitehouse.
At 10:15, what was cut off was that the crowd took over the White House at Andrew Jackson's Inauguration. There were so many people in the house that he slipped away and spent the night at a hotel and the crowd of people nearly destroyed the furnishings.

Well, this is a very dateable video. Seeing how it was made during the time of JFK so has be between 1961 and 1963. Love these old documentaries
Makes one very sentimental for our precious history.
There were two omissions in the presentation. When Chester Arthur became president he commisioned Louis Comfort Tiffany to install expensive glass features which were later torn out by TR (as mentioned) Some of the walls were graced by stuffed animal heads and other game stuff killed by TR in his younger days. And the second omission is the Jacqueline Kennedy remarked that many original pieces with the White House had been taken off by previous occupants and she made a serious effort to find were they went and to buy them back.
I watch this often to go to sleep at night! I absolutely love it! I feel like a little kid watching TV too late at night when I watch. I love it!!!
“In 1790 the land that laid along the Potomac was swampy”. Funny, that land today is still a swamp.
And isn’t it more funny that the people who “inhabit” it now have found their level in life.
Swampy was an understatement. Especially in summer, malaria was common, and the mosquitoes had a feast. It wasn’t the healthiest place to locate a capital. And for decades, what is now the Mall was a creek often contaminated with raw sewerage. It’s no wonder many of those who could leave the city in the summer, did so annually.
Bigger swamp then it was a year or so ago id say.. maybe the tide is rising.. idk?

I love these old movies but I can't let it go.. Woodrow Wilson, the most evil President ever, FDR a close second, not only allowed the federal reserve be passed but he had a stroke in his second term and allowed the corrupt Col Mendel House, he was never a col btw, and his wife run the government into the ground. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. No offense against the strokies either. I am a fellow strokie, with degrees in history and political science. I have problems. Harrison to Buchanan is a span of 16 years and 4 Presidents. This is the strangest history documentary Ive ever seen. They leave out at least 10 presidents, but include Presidents like WHH who had absolutely no impact at all.
They also forgot to mention that Hays was the first to inaugurate the Easter Egg Hunt
on the White House lawn
And then there began the most tragic era the White House had know... Really? It was literally burnt to the ground fifty years earlier.
How do I get rid of the silly footage counter? Is it really necessary?
Down load the video "the how to is on TH-cam". Then you need to have video editing software such as Filmora, there are many some free, and edit out the time stamp. The image will be cut off at the bottom.
The timestamp is added by Periscope Films to prevent, or at least discourage, pirating. You can obtain a licensed copy - without timestamp - from Periscope's website.

This would be a great film for public schoolers. A lot of our history just isn't taught anymore. 😕

Would luv to support old films, but without the extraneous countdown clocks attached to them and the backgroulnd music is way too loud. There must be a way to edit them out.
I was a White House volunteer for about 18 months in 1992-1993 or so starting with the transition team of Bill Clinton. Travelled thru the House, gave the Secret Service the history of the presidental seal using the architectural features from the China Room to the Oval Office (even sat behind the desk briefly to relay the information on the plaque of the Resolute desk for a Secret Service training film). Wandered to the basement (by accident) and helped with major events on the South Lawn. What a time!

Built on plantation land, slaves quarried the foundation stone, transported it and constructed the building. They worked alongside European craftsmen and free blacks who were paid wages. This video of course doesn't include that.

John hanson was the first president. Not George Washington. 1789 Washington. 1776 our independence.
Our USPS has made that abundantly clear by issuing the Hanson stamp several years ago. It is not news to me.

Wilson was a racist . Harding was a much better President than what revisionist historians believed back then . This is a very worthy series , but tainted with the beliefs of the mid-20th century .

This would have been both interesting and educational if it were not for that God-awful music which was too loud and too much!! These days, when I look at the WH, it's hard not to think of how such a beautiful building was left with such a foul stain by having Donald Trump live in it! I'm quite certain, the odor left by Trump will last longer than the heavy cheese smell mentioned in this documentary. I can only recommend a daily dose of Febreeze throughout the WH and keep your fingers crossed!
