    I own a 1989 dodge raider with the 3.0, it has a five speed, factory limited slip. I love this goat. I have 294,000 on my raider. My family is raider/montero fans. All together we have 2 3.0 parts rigs, and 2 4 cylinder parts rigs. We love our raider/montero's. So I have plenty of parts for my 89 3.0 with locker goat. So I will be following your videos. My raider is a goat.

      Water pump is out again. But I'm going to do a cheap at home rebuild. I will do some videos from beginning to end to help others. Almost 300k on an original engine, only took the intake off to clean it to pass Ca smog. But now I live in Wa where we have no smog. So stay tuned

      Between my uncle, cousin, and I. We have total of 8 raiders and monteros. 2 parts rigs with v6 a 2 door and a 4 door. And 3 4 cylinder monteros, I believe they are 87 monteros

    Very cool series you've made here! I'm currently looking for 1st gen Monteros/Raiders/etc. for a new project and I really enjoy doing every little thing maintenance-wise (I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade). I'll be watching every one of these. Thank you!

    Heck yeah, mine's a silver/black/grey 88 with 250k on it! It started knockin on #1 around 180k after I let my brother drive it and he left it in 4th on the highway, pushing 32s. New bearings and all was good. Dig the cage in yours, and the paint looks great! Best of luck with it, I Will be following the videos with interest, and maybe i can help with any familiar problems, or have other parts laying around you could use. I've turned practically every bolt on mine at least once over the near two decades I've had it. May be too late on this, but I highly suggest putting it back together with a new casting, jet valve-free head, and ARP studs, it might add half a grand to the build, but will tune easier, run, and hold up much better if it ever gets hot (think spinning wheels in snow, it's how mine started going), I don't miss my balance shaft either. If You can't go that route, I have a jet-valve eliminator kit that I never used I could send You (still wouldn't take care of the steel valve bodies in aluminium head problem though). Throw a weber on if you have problems with the mikuni that become unreasonable to fix (secondary vacuum actuator diaphragm will was a bill last i looked a decade ago, and practically impossible to replace anyway), then you can ditch and plug the smog pump and unnecessary vacuum hoses, and if the header cracks, the pacesetter headers off ebay have done well for me for near a decade.

      @anthonywatkins  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, thanks for the advice...the guy I bought it from put a new head on it a couple years ago, I was disappointed to discover it had the jets. Planning to just use this head until I encounter trouble with it. And yes I will be buying a Weber, not interested in working on that complicated stock carb. I'll look into the header you mentioned. Glad to hear you have one of these! I had an '87 Montero in the 90's that I eventually hauled to a junk yard...wish i had kept it.

      Hey have you replaced the rear main seal on your 2.6? If so, did you reinstall the oil separator (that metal ring that fits between the seal and block), or did you leave it off?

    • @macelius
      @macelius 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anthonywatkins It's been a decade since I rebuilt the engine, but I did everything by the big blue ('88 year) two-volume factory repair manual, and don't remember anything unusual with the main seal. The part should be available, are You having an issue with it? lf you don't have the manual set, I highly recommend it. They come up on ebay, meanwhile I can scan pages for you if you need. Looking forward to the next video.

    • @anthonywatkins
      @anthonywatkins  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macelius Yeah I have the manuals, it calls for a separator ring, suppose to protect the seal from too much oil pressure. I misplaced mine and was tempted to just install the seal without it, or order one and wait around for it...

    • @macelius
      @macelius 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anthonywatkins I know how that is, worst thing is it will likely turn up as soon as they ship the order. Could always try the yard and look around for one with it's tranny already off, these engines came in so many Chryslers of the era, dodge mini vans, new yorkers, etc. If You have to wait, least you'll have some time to edit an update video for us ;).

    Great videos. Thank you for detailed explanation of all the process. From your experience what is the best(durability and performance) engine and transmission option for this little SUV.

    • @anthonywatkins
      @anthonywatkins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, I believe they only offered the inline 4, a turbo diesel, and then a v6 in about '89...I'm sure the 6 is better for performance and the diesel for durability. Also, the manual 5-speed is peppier, but the automatic trans seem to last longer. Just have to decide which way you want to go...

      @@anthonywatkins thanks a lot. Looking for good deal. Not a lot of those for sale. Im in north east and what is in junkyard its all rusted. Thinking to get a good body somewhere and go from there. Thanks again.

      @@iliaortho Yeah, there's a bunch for sale out here in Seattle. We don't salt the roads, so very little rust here. Nearly bought one last month for $500, probly should have...

    • @iliaortho
      @iliaortho 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anthonywatkins I have heard about seattle amd no rust a lot. I do not mind distance if it is that cheap. Are they on craigslist or junkyards? What is the best source. Thanks again a lot for responding. It just looks wonderful project to play with. There was one on copart aouction but with salvage title. Here in Massachusetts it is very complicated to rebuild salvage title. State asks a lot of impossible paperwork. So I skipped on that one.

      @@iliaortho Look on Facebook Marketplace...Craigslist now charges $5 to post cars, so the old cheap stuff moved to Facebook... I've noticed Montero/ Raiders pop weekly. They're a great little truck to drive!

    Friendly correction: Mitsi's own nameplate did have the options... my MK1 (got it it three years ago) has the original AC lines, shock absorbingn front seats, and other amenities.

    • @anthonywatkins
      @anthonywatkins  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, yes any of the options could have been ordered on either brand...I've noticed that Raiders were more often dealer-ordered which means the dealer orders the truck for the lot and usually adds all the options, whereas Monteros were more often customer ordered with many customers saving a few bucks by not ordering all the options. Just my theory anyway...

    I have been keeping up with all your videos on the Raider build, I really enjoy them. I think its going to turn out very nice, great job Tony. What manual do you use? I have an 1988 Raider myself that I am starting to work on and I need a manual, and Haynes offers one for the Dodge family that includes the Raider, but also they have a Mitsubishi Montero manual that seems like it would be more fitting. Which one are you using?

    • @anthonywatkins

      Hey man, thanks for watching...I got ahold of the dealer shop manuals, you can find them on Ebay. I also have a Haynes manual for the Montero and its pretty good too. I'll show the manuals in the next video so you know what to look for.
