    Skyhawk is one of the most underrated NES games. I can’t even remember how many times I rented this game. When the store closed the owner gave me a copy because I rented it so much. Lots of fun, trying to drop bombs in the targets wasthe bane of my existence

      This story makes me happy. My first step father and I used to play this game and hes gone now. I had to sell my entire collection of nes games to pay for a fuel pump for a car during my 20's. This is the one game I keep and it was the same copy I played as a child. Good times.

    A little tip for everyone wanting to try this, in the overhead sections try to keep your fighter elevated as high as possible. You will become much harder to hit. Also, I focus only on upgrading the cannon and then just hawk bombs after that. Had a lot of fun growing up with this one!

    Captain Skyhawk is one of those games that are really hard f you don't know the tricks to beating it. From what I saw in your gameplay footage, you started to get it but haven't quite picked up on the more advanced techniques. I've been playing this game for 20+ years and I absolutely love it, but I hated it until I decided to really crackdown and figure it out. Example: There's a way to maneuver your plane to dodge bullets easier and using certain bombs for certain formations of enemies will kill them all and give you a bonus for the end of the level where you can get an extra life. So mix that with memorizing the level layout and that alone will get you much further. I play it all the time on my stream, maybe I should make a tips and tricks video, what ya think?

  • @masterrserch3971
    @masterrserch3971 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I really don’t get the “hate” this game gets. I liked it since the day I rented it 20 something years ago. The controls are fine--this is how every game was back then (it’s why I’m an invert the axis guy!) So I GUESS if u didn’t grow up in the 8 and 16 bit era, then not knowing the REAL controls of a plane can confuse u.
    I think the biggest complaint is very little if ever/lack of theme and background music. The docking is easy, landing the supplies is easy, and this game is only slightly harder now for me in my adulthood that I don’t spend 5 hours a day playing video games.... though back then, a lot of games were easy for me so maybe I’m not the best judge of game difficulty....
    but this is a fun game with a lot of destruction and flying around and having to pay attention to where you’re going, while you cause said destruction, which is always fun.... and if u upgrade the cannon firsr, you get rapid fire bullets and can just hold down the fire button and u destroy everything in your path--MORE DESTRUCTION!!!

    • @SuperMikeFender
      @SuperMikeFender 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. You have to keep an eye out for the diamond shaped projectiles and higher terrain while keeping a high altitude and strafing infront of enemies. The boring single colour of the stages and no music let it down and the after burner stages are a little slow and repetitive. Its really fun though and the other music is great since its David Wise. I like the fast levels particularly and think the controls are fine. But I played this a lot as a kid so am pretty used to it. Another Rare game that is a bit odd and has some odd parts that don't work but for the most part its great.

    This looks like one of those games where the developers clearly wanted to put elements from various games they liked into their game. SNES drunk correctly identified Zaxxon and After Burner as influences, but I can also see some nods to Elite with the space station (especially the docking and take off sequences). I wouldn't be surprised if there's some other stuff in there that I've missed, too.

    Loved this game so much as a kid I had to find a copy with a box as an adult. Difficulty is on the stout side but it can be mastered.

    Dragon Spirit is a fantastic game from this genre. Give it a try. Hint: if you're having trouble as the Blue Dragon, which is hard mode, die in the opening stage to play as the Gold Dragon. Fewer levels and double the health. It's a great way to get good at the game. I beat it as both Gold and Blue. There is an absolutely brutal ice level that requires lightning fast reflexes. You'll see. I look forward to your video about it.

    This was part of my first video game collection. Never made it to the end but made it well over 80% of the way through.

    I actually beat this game as a kid. It was the first NES game I ever beat. Such a fantastic game that rewards you for practicing. Great graphics and awesome sound design for a game of it's time plus some decent variety in level types.
    Definitely a cheap gem on the NES.

    I mean engineers are technically a type of scientist, though I suppose you could argue that it requires mastery of several disciplines to be an engineer.

    You might enjoy Tetra Star: The Fighter. It's also a lot like space harrier (and pulls some neat graphic tricks).

    To be fair, the controls in this game made a lot more sense in the context of the time. Back in the 90s, PC gamers often owned and were used to joysticks / flight sticks. Space combat sims like X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Descent, Freespace, etc and air combat sims were extremely popular games. Inverted controls were the norm for people who grew up with those games. All those genres are now (mostly) dead, and the flight stick controller is also (mostly) dead. But it was intuitive, and common, back when I played this game at launch. Just my two cents.

    I had this game back in the day. Very fun to play. Better than any of today's new games. Yes, I said it. You can't change my mind.

    How odd. When I was a kid, i was happy that this was one of the fue games i could play and beat. I don't recall having a hard time dodging things. Plus I love the soundtrack soooooo much.

    My mom bought me this game from Kmart one day....I remember clearly bcuz it's the only NES game that she bought me brand new....I hated it at 1st bcuz I could get absolutely nowhere. But my game library was limited, so I "got good"- good enough to see past the 1st level, anyway. Definitely never beat this one, but playing over and over and over makes the heart grow fonder, as they say. Good times.

    I beat this game when I was 10. Fun game! If the speedy stages are too fast, slow down by using SELECT+down. And also keep as high above the ground as possible. No need to go low except maybe for dropping the bombs.

    I owned this and was able to beat it on command back in the day, but it took a long time and hundreds of deaths to get to that point. I'm shocked I don't have nightmares about it.
