Gurrumul performing a live and exclusive set for ABC Dig Music's 'Intimate Evening' sessions @ the ABC's Melbourne studios - watch more at abcdigmusic.net.au/features/vi...
Gurrumul is speaking in his own native dialect. It doesn't matter what language he is singing in, it's his voice that is so powerful and transcends language. It reaches your soul. Blind from birth, Gurrumul is a member of the Gumatj clan of Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhem Land, Australia.
kmfw72 thanks for the info! Indeed "dialect" is s word used to make people think that it's not a real language, comes from colonial times. It's a language of course!
Dr G. Yunupingu's language was Gumatj, in the dialect continuum of the Dhuwal language. Gumatj is spoken by around 240 people, though as it is in the dialect continuum of the Dhuwal language, it is intelligible to around 3500 people. I am not Indigenous, though this is what I understand from the Australian languages database (austlang.aiatsis.gov.au/main.php?code=N198*). Hope this helps.
What makes Gurrumul a great artist, is the fact that their songs have a lot of feeling, passion and really touch the soul, without any cheesy or cheaps tricks like many pop, rock or ballad artists. His voice is Unique, not like all the male singers that have the same style that is biased by the media to be likeable to the layman. Also most of us are ignorant of the language he sings, but it seems that the lyrics are carefully placed within the melody.
this is a beautiful song! :) the world would be a better place with people like him who plays such wonderful and peaceful music... im kind of crying... :)
I just Love Joeffrey.I wish I new the meaning of this song. It sounds a deep and anguish cry directly from the bottom of the heart. What ever it is, this song is outstanding, a great masterpiece indeed.
come on... lets just celebrate and applaude great sounding music and talent! this man has a spirit and soul just like every other human being, his expression is in his music and his does it magically! Learn to express yourself in a good way. Not by putting other down.
Through the incredible talent, presence and voice of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, we are left in complete awe of the spirituality of our our Aboriginal countrymen. I hope his achievements and his fine example inspire a new generation of Aboriginals, to express themselves in their own language, and in their own unique ways. Bravo Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu !!! ^_^
He does play "upside down" taught himself aged 5-6 years old - they had no left handed guitars in his village ! Amazing transcendental music . if more people listened to guys like this there would be less aggression in the world.
@catou0001: You really need to watch this all the way through - check at 1.55, and even better, 3.45. That is not a guitar turned around and stringed for a left hander, it’s a right handed guitar upside down. The bass E is at the bottom. Been downloading his tunes all week. Astonishing.
This guy rocks -all the haters need to stop and take a breath - he has more talent in his little finger than most mainstream pop dross have in their whole family tree. Skin colour and race are redundant and talent is everything- WAKE UP
Sich selbst zu finden, oder zumindest seinen Weg ist schwierig und mühsam. Manchen gelingt das nie. Aber diese Musik hat mir sehr geholfen. Würde ihn gerne mal Life sehen.
Heard Gurrumul perform live at WOMADelaide a year ago. He has a beautifully soulful voice, though at that time he was wasting it on a gratingly repetitive song with practically just the same hook repeated over and over. This is a much better introduction IMO. :)
a shy person, as Gurrumul is, during concert tenses his muscles and emmiting sound has got different aliquot tones than in studio circumstances, that's it.
could listen to his voice 24/7. soothes me.
Gurrumul's voice & music speak to my soul..... beautiful, spiritual, true.....
Thank you !
Love this song and the remixed version from the movie Cargo is amazing!!!
Most beautiful voice & music I've ever heard in my whole life ..
Every single song by Gurrumul tugs at the strings of my heart and tears start flowing from my eyes. He unites us with God!

+Sandra Barton Dialect of what? A dialect is a variant of a language, which in this case is called Yolngu.

A very awesome voice , i'm wondering what is that language he sings in ? =) Does anyone know ?
