- How to stop your horse jumping flat with Kirstin Kelly. This video covers one of my favourite exercises. It is safe and simple and so effective. When your horse jumps flat, it is generally a weakness in his strength or balance or possibly a lack of schooling. By building a high armed X for him to jump, it teaches him to respect the jumps and back off the front rail himself. We always want the horse to respect the jump himself rather than be held off by the rider. By trying to hold the horse off the front rail with your hands, makes the horse jump hollow, tense and without care. To stop your horse jumping flat, the rider needs to create a good canter, have a great rhythm and teach the horse to rock back onto his hind-quarters.

Hey Kirstin. Could you please do a video with excercises for horses who dont pick their legs up/knock poles? That would be so appreciated :-)
This would be one of the best exercises for that, also go into my channel and search "trotting the vertical" helps et them to rock back and the "tune Up double"
I've been training a Arabian quarter mare from barrel to jumper no trainer or qualifications but we're getting somewhere and this is gonna help I believe
Excellent, this is a great way for the rider to be quiet and the jump to teach the horse to jump up rather than flat

Cassidy Anthony I’m an event rider sweetie, and I don’t jump my horse constantly so it’s not bad. If they are jumped constantly then that’s bad so take your own advise and do research from reliable sources and watch the FEI jumping 😊
Ok thanks for not getting super mad but I still don't think you should jump your horse unless there's like a predator chasing you then you can jump but any other time I just think it's cruel

Love the video! Do have a question though that doesn’t exactly relate to this video. My horse likes to “hesitate” over the jumps if that makes sense. She likes to hop over it. Are there exercises I can use to fix that?
Hey Kirstin! Love your videos! But, which exercises are recommended to improve your horses jumping technique? Because my horse lands very deeply and close to the jump, when he does that he gets a very high backend and it’s hard for me to land without flopping around. He also doesn’t pull against the jumps, I mean he loves to jump, but I can never get the right distances in lines :/ I hope u see this

Just a question, I ride quite a green, naught pony mare that often refuses as well as jumps flat, I have been doing this for a few months now and thought she would be fine if I took her to a vertical, she still jumped flat so I took her back to the cross rail for a few and then took her back to a vertical and she still jumped flat. How would I fix it if she is doing fine on the cross rial, bt jumping flat on all the other jumps? Would I just keep working at the cross rail?
Hi Lil, I would put a plank on the ground 3 metres after the cross so the horse has to stay round like a rainbow over the jump. When the horse is happy I would place another cross 3 metres from the plank with another plank on the ground 3 meters behind it. Then when happy I would make the second jump a vertical. Then it will have to look at the ground for the plank to stay round and soft Make sure all your tack fits correctly and that the reason the horse doesn't use the back is because they are in pain.

My horse was originally western and now he is doing jumping and loving it. Just one question. He drops his head after jumps leaving me to have to slide down in the saddle so his hind doesn’t bump me forward. How can I make him keep his head up over a jump? Thank-you, loved the video
Hi, that is a tricky one. You can’t make him lift his head up but you could check that the saddle fits properly as a sore wither might make him drop his head dramatically. Also try a different bit as a single jointed bit will lift the head but as his feet are off the ground - it’s hard to influence his head carriage mid-flight. Also check his hadn’t got sore feet which could make him drop his head on landing too
@@KirstinKellyEquestrian Thankyou so much, at the moment I am using an egg but snaffle bit on him and his saddle fits and has the chiro frequently. My trainer and I seem to think it might be the western in him but I will have to try this. Thankyou
What bit is that or what are some options to use for a horse that jumps flat, heavy and drags to the jumps?
Stacy Machuga this was a snaffle mouth piece with some leverage on the poll . Before you try a new bit though you need to tick a few boxes. Is the canter balanced? Is the canter adjustable? Does the horse go fast to canter poles on the ground? If the answer is yes then you need to improve the flatwork first then Address the jumping flat . If he is calm but heavy then something like this would help as well as doing the bounce exercise ( I have a video on it )

Horses don't like jumping it hurts them mentally and physically very badly your poor horses are suffering from your "love and training"
