I know I’m late!!! A year late, but I just found your channel!!! Love , love it!! I have lots of washi tape, but I have never seen anything like this. I make cards, so I’m very excited to make cards using this technique. I’m not even through the video (at the bird part), but I had to stop and leave a comment. You are brilliant!! I definitely will be binge watching your videos. I’m anxious to see what else you have in your wheelhouse. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. 💜
This is such a super idea. Suggestion: try running your washi covered base card through your die machine using a simple die. Save a ton of time and arthritic hands.
I have never worked with Washi tape because I did not understand what could be done with it. Your demo here is so awesome. You just opened another door for my art. Thanks.
I love this idea for a quick craft. Also love how your art journal looks! I like to use all my junk mail flyers and such. The paper quality is nice and it gets totally covered up with the tape. Whatever print does show through slightly often just adds to the color and design and looks interesting. Great way to upcycle junk mail, especially if you don’t own any scrapbook or other craft paper. Personally, I’m impatient and find it too annoying to worry about all the little edges and corners of the washi tape getting nice and flat (my washi tape isn’t very sticky), so I just make sure to cover the finished product with Mod Podge or a mixture of white school glue and a bit of water (to help spread the glue) and that keeps the corners from peeling up. It does add a bit of texture, but I kind of like that. Also, if you don’t love the overall finished look once the paint is down, you can add a wash of paint (watered down paint) or spray ink, etc. so the overall color is more to your liking but the designs still show through. So fun! Love your videos ❤
I’m just starting to incorporate multi media into my abstracts and I’ve much to learn! Thank you for teaching me how to create my own washi tape. Can you recommend where to purchase the large multi patterned stencils?
Thank you for the micropore idea! For storing your homemade washi tape you can also stick your tape onto a sheet of baking paper. Once you've finished painting your tape, leave it on the baking paper and roll the sheet onto an empty paper towel roll and take of pieces when you need them. You can layer and store several sheets of wash tape on the same roll.
I love the custom washi tape. I use washi tape for quite a few different things--and heaven knows I have quite a bit of it--but sometimes I still don't have the colour I want so ... 😄I might have to get out all the colours and paint up some tape in every colour. The micropore tape is a great tip. Never would have thought to try that.
This is my first time seeing you, and I have enjoyed your video very much. I am subscribing to you and can't wait to see your other videos. Thank you so much. I am disabled, and the only things I can do are work, make cards, and crochet. I never leave my home because it is so hard for me. So, watching these videos makes my day, and again, I greatly enjoyed this one.
@@KarenElaine I love that you have come up with making different things outside the box. Using Washi Tape to make templates of birds or anything to put on cards is just amazing. I can't wait to see your other great designs.
answer to how-to in a timerly fashion.... using deli paper & keep it flat but the credit cards hack is great... your patience helps me slow down to gitter done., & noit berkovich hot me using cuticle scissors for round cuts...ty.
i love this techique. If it were me, I'd try to fit as many birds onto 1 sheet as possible, the way you do with cookie cutters. There's really no reason to cut it right from the center.
Ooh, la la! I love your bird stencil. Did you say you made it? Did you make it available to subscribers in some way? I’m all eager to try this technique now. Thanks so much.
What a wonderful idea! 👍 Love your homemade washi tape, and the bird and leaf images are BEAUTIFUL! 🌟✨️🌟 How inspiring!🤩 Thank you for sharing! 🐦 🍂 /Ditte 🤓 🇸🇪
Tissue paper with double sided adhesive makes lovely washi tape. You are able to just roll it up to store because it still has the backing on it. Your patterns are never damaged by the tacky over time. You can also cut it into different widths.
I just 'found' your channel, and as soon as I saw what I have been missing, I subscribed!!! What fun ideas........ I have plenty of Washi tape that I just couldn't throw away but never used! THANKS!!
Its after two years I have found you. What a brilliant idea....and so rewarding to use our own hand made washi tape in our Artwork....A big thank you for giving this class...!!❤
Just subscribed...loving your video! You mentioned that in "past classes you went crazy making decorated tapes using double sided carpet canvas tape on a roll". I really love the colorful samples you showed in this video, but I can't seem to find that class on You Tube to be able to go over your technique. Can you be more specific about the name and/or date that you did that class? Many thanks, Janet
I have tons of washi tape and not many ideas. I love what you've done and can't wait to try my hand at it. Thank you for sharing...hugs from Arizona...:)
Love this washi collage method of making embellishments. One can cut out any shapes desired. I can envision using a fine black sharpie or micropen to add in petals on a rose {or any flower} shape. Tfs
I look forward to all of your videos because I love what you do. You are very creative and really know how to use art supplies. By the way what is that expensive acrylic you used. I don’t recognize the packaging.
You are wonderful and I love your ideas. The birds are a treasure. Thanks so much for taking the time. I have just gone from fine art to collage and know I should’ve done it a long time ago. Am a Klimt fan.
This a terrific idea, bower can I use my big shot with my metal dies, to cut out a design? Also, can we use water paints? Thanks in advance for your reply!😄
Wouldnt the process be quicker if you traced the bird onto the paper and fill that central area eith some over hang? I am going to try make washi tape. The prices of store bought is nuts.
Washi tape is masking tape, its designed to be removed and not be permanent. if you want it to be permanent on your ephemera you need to glue them down, just fyi. ;) I like to stamp on the washi tapes i make, using medical paper tape is great because you can match anything, and its permanent, unlike the real washi tapes.
thanks for sharing! you're gonna laugh about this, and you're probably gonna really appreciate the irony. I was actually looking for a way to make special-shaped frames for inspirational words for a project, and following the mad rabbit 'round the you-tube hole, I found your little tutorial. I first clicked on it because I really loved the awesomely colored birds and things. but then I saw the way you cut out the intended embelishment from the middle of the specially made card, and eurika!! of course, the finicky work around the legs won't do for a frame, but the body shape of the bird?! and a butterfly?!! exactly what I wanted!! cheers! 🍹
Great ideas! I like using that 3m first aid tape for holding down my watercolour paper, because it won’t let go before you’re ready, and it won’t tear the paper when you peel it off. Also, you don’t really need to wrap the tape around a card, could just leave it on the sheet and save space :-)
@@KarenElaine A way that I store my homemade Washi tapes is by getting a straw, usually a bigger then usual one, and wrap the tapes around themselves. Then, the straw can be put on a skewer or wire, or maybe a wood dowel. So easy and it keeps them nice. I have to do things this way because if I don't "see" them, I'll forget about them, lol. Love your channel. Just found it tonight. Absolutely love Mary Beth. I took a class of hers, years ago, at an Art & Soul Retreat.
Enjoyed your tutorial on making washing tape. Never heard of micropore tape. But, instead of fussy cutting I would use a punch, so much faster. I subscribed.
This is an awesome way to use washi tape! Thanks for sharing your idea. I have a lot of washi tape that I don't use very often. I am definitely going to make a bunch of embellishments for my cards using your idea. I have mod podge that I will use to seal my tape when done. I wonder if you can run this through a die cutting machine? Maybe if I keep the tape to 1 or 2 layers it will work and not use a paper that is to thick. Oh my gosh, I have a million ideas running through my head now that I saw your video! Thank you so much for sharing this with us all! I love mixed media projects.
This is SO beautiful! I bought some blank, longer cards on Amazon that are specifically for washi. I use them to share some of my washi with my granddaughter who lives in another state. I have…over 600 rolls (I have a binder to index them all!) I’m still making washi with this tutorial though, lol! Off to see if we have micropore tape in our first aid kit!
I’ve been using that tape to bind small notebooks…have also stenciled for the handmade washi and love it’s transparency. Such a Great idea you brought forward; just LOVE your slap down images for ephemera…found you recently and have subscribed-so enjoying your channel-you are so talented, easy to follow and understand. Such great info, thanks! I think if a person did not want to use washi tape as the base for the stencil you could use paper scraps that you glue down.
That's a great idea! I think I will try it! :-)
You mean glue any paper scraps?
Yes, just glue down some paper and put your stencil over that@@veronicaoliver8210

Hi Becky, thank you for your kind comments. I used Holbein Matte acrylics for this project, but any acrylic paint will work just fine! 🙂
I would put a light layer of mod podge over the piece to keep washi from lifting off.
