His lyrical lines, sensitivity, clarity, total control of the instrument, are only a small part of who Carl Fontana was as a musician. Wonderful to share the stage with him if only for one gig that I will always remember in Hilton Head, S.C. RIP dear Carl Fontana, your music is not lost, we will have it forever to hear.
I love Carl's playing, but can we take a second to appreciate the rest of the band as well? The horns in this create some of the darkest and most luscious chords I've ever heard come out of a big band, simply beautiful!
Had an honor to share the same stage with Carl for whole 4 years at the SANDS, playing over 2,500 "Danke Schoens" during these times with "WAYNE NEWTON". THE BAND WAS WONDERFUL. Wayne was the hottest item on the Strip, we could not even get arrested. Golden Seventies) We all miss you dear Carl, RIP our dear Friend.
One of the prettiest, most coherent and masterful solo I have ever heard. Every note makes sense, at the same time every phrase is an elegant surprise. A true master.
I love to watch his slide hand. He has a sizable mitt, but moves his large fingers with grace and no wasted movement. And then there’s his doodle tonguing! The combination makes him SO fast and yet he’s very smooth and relaxed. There was only one Carl Fontana!
Fab" trombone jazz master ! And lovely ,'' brush work " from drummer ' etc , - and" fab" brass work ( brass / sax section ) -cheers to you all , from -Wales , England. .
***** We had something like that at my high school jazz band :D In the solos the trumpets, tenor sax and trombones always included five or six notes from another song... Two of them actually did it in concert, discreetly. Anyways.
@@boomcrash The Band Leader is a friend of Don Menza and he gave a copy of the arrangement to him. I asked for a copy of it and was told that it`s not for sale and it goes to just friends.

Totally right!!
He was always chewing gum, when playing....

You've got good taste

Came to vegas to play bone a little late huh...
Love Carl’s playing. Nice “La Cucaracha” quote @ the beginning of his solo.
Can’t get enough of his Luscious playing. He is a real master.
The ALWAYS elegant CF! My friend, my hero, my mentor. We all love you still, CF. Sleep well, my dear friend.....

The wonderful Carl Fontana WDR big band - front man Don Menza.

Agree, he is unbelievable!
Lovely, mellow chords from this band to back a great soloist.
Normally he played a Bach trombone... here... a King 2B... same tone quality.... who knows what gum he chewed? Maybe it helps...
Norman Smit ...Normanly, you mean.
I believe he normally played a Williams 6
C'est difficile d'exprimer ce que l'on ressent : un grand bonheur , une profonde émotion, soliste et orchestre de rêve
Great playing by a master.
Perfect!
It's Don Menza leading the band.
Fantastic trombone player... rates up in the top 10! Such a great player!
Great playing Carl .Fabulous arrangement. 5 Stars!
Ain't nothin like a big band- unless it's a damn studio orchestra.
The title of this song should serve as the slogan for all trombone players present and future.
Idk what you're talking about man😂
If only Carl could have played relaxed... Oy! He's the coolest.
Carl as only Carl can do! A legend.
I'd like to know what Chris would consider better than average....
This song should be played at every trombone conference and after, 10 minutes of reflection devoted to its deeper meaning.
If you feel it, you play it. And, you play it brilliantly...Gracias Car Fontana

Great trombone player, cool and flexibility!!!
Smooth like butter from a Peruvian mountain village
In wich year was this concert?
A great mind for great trombone playing .
One of the greatest ever!
So cool
Gotta love 1:50 ... :D

Fantastic listening
Quoting la cucaracha (1:50) and jarabe tapatio (6:30) seamlessly is hilarious.
Cool, plain and simple. Great tb scoring in the background.
Amazing!
Carl Fontana is playing King 2B !
Pre UMI, I hope!
Was Rick Kiefer still in the trumpet section?
I have to say, I like the other version better. This one's far too slow for my liking.
It's ok...Chris just does't have a clue. Probably a good guy...just clueless
I am looking for this arrangement, would there be any way I could get a copy?
Is it Joe on drums?
yes
Yup Joe LaBarbera.
“La Cucaracha” lick was nice
Where can I find this arrangement?!
I would like this chart as well. Gotta love some Carl
No one seems to know where to get this arrangement as of a few years ago, anyone find it? So good...!
Joan Monne has a nice arrangement: th-cam.com/video/JelMOmQq83Q/w-d-xo.html
Happy birthday daddy ❤
Chandler Bing on bass!
Only word I can think of is . . . AWSOME! I've heard several versions of this. I've even adopted it in some of my gigs. NOT, however, like Carl does.
Don mensa
A LOVE CARL FOREVER THE BEST.
1:51 la cucaraachaa
/watch?v=5TT50zC3T1g
the lick at 2:25
We do this arrangment with the Wed Night rehearsal Band I play with. Except it`s done by a great Tenor Sax player,
Who is the publisher? I’d love to play this with my group.

Carl Fontana was made for this tune, and the tune was made for Carl. He was truly the Perry Como of the trombone!
Couldn't agree more. I think the song title represents the aspirations of trombone players everywhere.
Incredible trombonists exist, but, the true masters of their instrument have long passed. Prove me wrong!
Steve Davis,Michael Dease,Conrad Herwig,Robin etc
Average at best..mainly sloppy
Let’s see a video of the jazz great “Chris Oney” playing. Oh right, it doesn’t exist and you’re a nobody.
You must be real good. I would love to hear your above average stuff.
