How to make a killer flower arrangement with Cranery Gardens (Part 2)

- This is part 2 of a two part series. In part 1, Crane walks us through his garden and we cut flowers along the way to arrange in this video.
Jessie makes a $30 mason jar arrangement and seeks constructive feedback from Crane. Crane discusses color, form, and his personal tastes for what makes a great $30 mason jar arrangement that sells well at his roadside stand.
We also discuss pricing these jars and the $$ behind Crane's side hustle. The takeaway? With the right perennial flowers, I could be doing alot less work!

I asked the right questions and hit on a lot of good point. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@cranerygardens thank you for such an interesting video. May I ask, what Ninebark you used in the 1st bouquet? Stunning work! 💐
i love how you guys learn together
Love your work!
Crane, I'm wondering if you have irrigation set up, or do you just hand water as needed?
Interesting video. I'm curious if you learnt from this? Will you adjust your prices/amount of flowers?
Crane, the reason I love your bouquets, is because you create them for your love of beauty, not the price. If I lived near you, I would buy your arrangements because of your gift of creativity, which I understand, having that gift myself. I don't buy pre-made floral arrangements, because they don't have the heart and design sense that your arrangements have. Your interest in making lasting meaningful relationships, means everything in life.
You will have many opportunities come your way, because of the way you value and respect relationships.
Just wish I lived closer to you, but Washington is pretty far away to run over to visit you and enjoy your garden with you.
Thank you so much for your kind words 🥹❤️🙏🏻 Sending love from here 😘🥰
$15?? $30?? That’s insane! I’m a florist, and an arrangement like that is easily $90 at my shop. Your lucky customers are getting a steal on your gorgeous flowers! Thank you for this enjoyable video! You’re both so cute and incredible!
For sure, and I think his customers know it too! Thank you for watching ☺️
He has a heart and not robbing people.
@@jessieslay7422 I’m sorry, but that is either a very uninformed or unkind comment. Professional floristry, especially high-end and event planning, is not cheap, but that doesn’t mean that florists are robbing people blind. In fact, florists are some of the most generous and giving people I know.
He is enjoying what he does and developing relationships rather than dwelling on making mefa bucks. This is a genuine good guy with a heart for people.
Awww… thank you ☺️😊❤️
I love watching Crane build his bouquets! He is so creative and his heart goes into each one of them. His videos inspire me. You can learn so much about flowers but he always shares life lessons that are invaluable! ❤️
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 Patti. 🥹🥹🥹❤️❤️❤️
Crane doesn't overtthink arrangements, however he is meticulous regarding beauty and feel good-vibes. I think his personal bouquets match his moods. I'm tickled when he just has to add more.❤😂
Agreed! It’s like “free art”. I was laughing so hard when we were ready to shoot the finished product and he was still stuffing them 🤣🤣🤣
I loved to hear the conversation between the two of you. It is important to remember that flower farming is not one size fits all.
💯. Let’s also say I may have employed the “I can help myself technique” for the bouquets I dropped off at the country store this weekend 🤪
Crane you are so considerate of other people, your arrangements of flowers are very artistic, you work very hard i think you don’t charge enough to compensate for the work you do.i wish you were living next to me I would buy every week God Bless from Australia 🇦🇺
I couldn’t wait to see your cost breakdown of Crane’s bouquet. I love that he just wants to create an artistic display to bless his customers and share the beauty growing in his garden and he doesn’t let the per stem price influence what goes in the bouquet. I cracked up as he was squirming watching you add flowers haphazardly to the jar knowing he builds his spiral bouquet in his hand. I especially love that you understand his heart that he can overstuff, keep his business manageable in order to not burnout and maintain his joy.
LOVED this video!
Thank you! We both laughed alot in video 2 for the reasons that you stated but also learned from each other :)
Hai Crane n Jenny wow hebat kerja dama yg baik ,saling berbagi ilmu merangkai bunga .dan tiap orang ada keunikan tersendiri ,kerja sama yg baik Crane n Jenny pejuang kebaikan yg membahagiakan orang banyak.sangat infah perbedaan ,itulah hidup .tks sukses besr selalu slamat malam.❤❤❤❤
I appreciate how you highlight different perspectives within the industry. Crane’s joy in what he does really shines through. ❤
I also love how most people watching understand both perspectives! And yes, if everyone in the world could find for themselves what flowers are to Crane, I think we'd live in a better place ❤
Thank you 🥰
This was a FABULOUS video! So much awesome content as well as the best editing as well. I love that you were so specific about how the 2 bouquets were built and how the perceived value compared.
Thank you! I love hearing different perspectives and my views towards pricing are constantly changing, especially after this experience! Appreciate the kind words on editing- always trying to improve!
Love this so much, so nice to see an example of someone selling for these reasons, I really resonate with Crane and have a similar model. Thanks for sharing.
There’s a whole group of people who grow to give away via The Growing Kindness Project. I think it’s important even when we are selling with the intention of making profit, that we carve out dedicated product for giving away. Not product that wasn’t unsold but fresh, high quality product that would be reserved for normal customers. There are a lot of ways to sell “kindly” in a capitalist world and I’m glad to see more are in this bucket.
Home gardener here but I enjoyed this video. Thank you both for highlighting that there should be balance between artistry versus making money.
Thank you 🤗
Crane has great artistry in making gorgeous bouquets, he also grows a gorgeous garden, Jessie your strength ia your business accumen and so this combination made for a fab video. More success to both of you.
Thank you :)
Hi Jessie and Crane,
I absolutely loved your video. So many wonderful ideas and insights here!
I am in the process of researching various aspects of the flower industry and this has been invaluable.
I will be watching both of your channels on repeat!
Thank you so much,🌸🌼🌿
Paula
Thank you, appreciate you leaving this comment and for your support 🙃
Excellent interview Jessie. You really did bring out so much of Crane's personality and skills.
I agree such a great interview!
Thank you ☺ ☺ ☺
Very informative! Thanks for this great collab!
Thank you! 😊
I love this video so much! “I get to have this garden” is my favorite quote!
💯, it reminded me of “I can have my flowers and cut them too” 😉
Crane's bouquet was so beautiful! I like the color palette. And TLC!
That’s so fun and sweet!!!
i love this so much!!!!
Loved it!
Spectacular!
Thank you🌷
This was great! Thank you both!
excellent job
Wonderful video !!
You have a real personality for ti's job.
Crane….I love your garden….your bouquet making reminds me of how a wedding bouquet is made….in your hand… it turned out lovely 🥰 the other bouquet was more free flowing…both have preferred customers! Thanks for your content!! Nice!!😊btw Crane….put a ribbon on that n it is $150 wedding bouquet!!!! Been there..done that!!! Crane, I’m a stuffer too! But I’m sure you put plenty of flowers in your 40$ bouquets!!!and I’m sure they were beautiful!!!
Awesome awesome two part video! 😍😍
Thank you!
So helpful thank you !
You're so welcome!
Enjoyed the collaboration. ❤
Thank you 😊
What a beautiful space and stunning bouquet Crane has created. I would love to see the space in the fall!
Agreed! I would too! Maybe we’ll be able to do another collab!
Revenue positive hobby!
You both are the cutest- my two favorite YouTubs channels! ❤ This was fun- no one can beat Crane's bouquets- they are unmatched!
Thanks, Sally and yes! His bouquets are unmatched for sure!
I am loving this series! The flower roast is genius for a video ❤
I do also think that Crane seems much too nice to ever roast anyone
Hahah i agree 🤣🤣🤣
Instant follow to both accounts! This was such a creative video, and you both are incredibly knowledgable in your respective talents. Loved hearing Crane's stories ❣
Thank you! Appreciate you taking the time to write this!
I really loved this collaborative video. It gave a different sort of insight into how you create your bouquets. It always looks so effortless in your explanatory videos, but somehow having this dialogue pulled out a few more technical details that help me understand why it’s not as effortless when I’m doing my own home bouquets :) 💕🌷🌱💐
Glad this was helpful! I sure learned so much! All the questions I normally had but can't ask through the screen 😅
From a credit card processing standpoint... Florists are classified as a "services" merchant category code where you get a lower processing rate for tickets over $100.
This doesn't help anyone who uses Square/Stripe/Clover and didn't ask for IC+ pricing... For anyone on cost plus, make sure you get that florist MCC.
I didn’t realize that. Good to know!
wow , I did not know you live so close to each other:-)) . I follow you and love you both, it is so great to see you working together:-)))
Aww thank you!
This is such a great video. Most arranging / designing videos lack any kind of explanation - Why did you put that there? Why don’t you like that? Why did you move that?
Crane does a great job of explaining his rationale and relating them to design concepts.
Jessie you are the ying to Crane’s yang - you bring in the logistics, pricing, and business knowledge. You guys are a fabulous team. 👍🏻
Thank you! I’m always full of questions so I’m glad others are getting something out of that and I love how you described our two personalities! It’s spot on! Crane would be the perfect flower partner for me if we were to ever consider this FT 😁
He's making a beautiful bridal bouquet.
Jessy, I liked your bouquet more. Yes, was too high for that vase, and foliage overwhelmed flowers a little bit, but the different hights of sterms and airness plus assymetry maked it more interesting in my view.
This is the beauty of design! There is no right or wrong and there are so many tastes out there. Crane’s jars are a bit more wedding design like which look beautiful. But there is definitely a place for taller arrangements especially in a big, open room!
I feel like Crane’s bouquet is florist quality. - In RI it would be over $100 in a different vase. It’s so beautiful but an extreme bargain. I would definitely buy from him regularly ❤
Totally agree that it's florist quality and an extreme bargain. His customers know it too ;-)
I love Crane's bouquets & he obviously enjoys the creativity & yes, they are technically probably undervalued, but l just think Crane's customers are very lucky. I always feel a bit the same. I don't want my bouquets to look a bit stingy.
Also, perhaps we overemphasize the need for long stems. Comparing the 2 bouquets, Crane's is shorter but looks stunning & the stems are not visible, just the gorgeous blooms.
My visit with Crane definitely influenced me this weekend and let's just say I may have stuffed a few extra stems than normal :)
He should follow his heart and price accordingly. He wants to live with hisself. Good conscious..
P.S. don't ever change who you are!
❤
Crane is definitely an artist. I also overstuff my bouquets and sell them at $30. I just can't help it. I do prefer 32 oz jars because you can do a taller bouquet and the height is always nice. It makes it look a bit more expensive.
I also do like the 32 oz and when in stock, that's what I buy and it forces you to go a bit higher in height vs a 16 oz pint jar. I now definitely have an appreciation for both short and taller arranagements!
I discovered bright color flowers look best with dark foliage, pastel with light. The light foliage washes them out.
You're probably like me then! Being attracted to contrasting colors at the opposite end of the color wheel 😀
I’m also guilty of making them too tall. The snapdragons and bells always flop over and I just don’t learn. I do stuff them though. I give them out for free though.
Crane definitely has a very particular style of building mason jar bouquets and I’ve seen taller styles work too! I think it also depends on what you like but what I love is seeing the different methods that people employ so that I can discover my own 😊
What is the name for the roses you grow, so beautiful.
Hi! Crane took us through his rose patch in part 1 where he talks about the names th-cam.com/video/h60dMLD65PE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ITBPr4maWF5Q22R3
So my question is - do you buy certain focal flowers to add to bouquet if you don't have in your garden? How do you make these decisions?
From when I spoke to Crane, it appears that for floral holidays, if he doesn't have focal flowers, he'll buy in blooms. But for most of the season, he has enough perennials or will start annuals from seed to carry him through!
From my perspective- I actually bought a ton of stems in my year 1 because I didn't grow enough yet sold at a farmer's market every other week. That made sense for me because it meant I could have some sort of consistency and maximize my sales. If I didn't have the farmer's market, I probably wouldn't have done that.
love love you two together , has Crane got a YT channel ????
Yes! He is at @cranerygardens
I have a floral shop and have been in business for 12 years. I always wanted to have a garden just like this. It is beautiful. Im wondering what kind of box did he used for payment and is the mason jar included. I think i will do this same thing in front of my shop on weekends. Has anyone ever picked up bouquet without paying.? Just curious.
He had a lock box where one deposits in the money and you need a key to take it out. He also accepts prepayment on his website and Venmo very seldomly (for friends). He didn’t say anything about theft and I’m assuming it’s bc there aren’t that many jars and his customers are regulars. Hope this helps!
@@bareflowerfarm thank you love your videos
What is the green on the outside of Crane’s bouquet?
I think you’re referring to Solomon’s seal!
So which bouquet sold first????
Neither of us know 😂 but both sold!
Sadly- to be brutally honest 😢Jessie’s bouquets 💐 ALWAYS seem to be completely focused on how to make money/ a profitable side hustle 💰
Crane’s bouquets 💐 are from his ❤️ first & then money 🤑❣️ An excellent video content comparison💯🎯
In all fairness, the business side of flower farming is the point of this channel! I think I’ve been pretty transparent that my design skills are what I need to be working on but I can definitely confidently say that there’s not enough content out there around creating a profitable flower farm business to stay around for the long term 😉
Thank you for your feedback
Do you watch Jay Clause? If you do, you know why my next bouquet video will have the same specific word you used in this video.
I’ve been an Aprilynn Altar fan 😉
@@bareflowerfarm My initial response was, darn you beat me to it, using it for a bouquet adjective. I will use it anyway as I already have the title in my roster. Also, Jay is super interesting.
@@EvelynM-vlogsI got randomly fed one of his videos of Jenny Hoyos and that’s how I got down the rabbit hole of that category. I’ve actually been waiting for a chance to use this title. But definitely try it and I’m curious to see how it does!
@@bareflowerfarm I just posted my "Next Level" peony bouquet recipe so I have to wait until I have another focal flower blooming before I use the killer description. I was hoping to have ranunc recipes next week but our weather just has not been co-operating.
Most people couldn't pay $30 for flowers to decorate with. It would have to be more like $10 since they don't last long anyway...That is me. He is doing this more for enjoyment ,not to get rich.
You don't want to hurt your florist friends but you are. You are undercutting them selling bouquets way to cheap based on the flowers in your bouquets. It might not hurt their sales but if one of you customers want to buy from the florist for a special event their expected cost will be lower based on your prices. Does the price include the mason jar?
I don't think that's a fair statement. I personally have never seen a florist's bouquet aside from extremely high end design work (so I'm talking about your typical florist shop) that I would even take into my house for free. Most of them are insanely expensive and hideous. I'm not a customer for them as a result, but I'd pay 30 for one of his regularly. Me taking his flowers wouldn't mean a loss for any local businesses, and honestly if it did, it's not his responsibility to take care of local florists. It's frustrating to see people putting pressure on literal micro businesses to act like full fledged businesses when clearly this is something he loves doing and probably isn't interested in that anyway. Trying to shame him for a side gig that enriches his life and gives people access to flowers they otherwise wouldn't buy isn't helping anyone.
