Actually it felt like a retcon. The first episode she was back in season 8 he asked her if she was happy she left and she said that she was glad she finally had the guts to do it. Doesn’t sound like she was forced to do it. Plus they should of left her arc in season 7. I feel like they ruined her whole character with what they did in season 8. Just like the ruined Chloe and Clark in season 9.
Story wise; Clark's relationship with Lana as unnecessary as I think it was, had it's moments and this was one of those moments where the show really shines. No matter how much i disapprove of this relationship; it did the show good and provided one of my favorite moments for this show. Very emotional. Yes. Very touching.

EVEN THOUGH ITS AN OLD SHOW IM MENTIONING SPOILERS I always found Clarks love life really sad since 2 died, Lana dies, betrays him in one of his darkest hours even though he saved her life and lost his dad because of it (although she didn't know that) and then dumps him at least twice (she kind of dumped him more and I could be forgetting a few), he has something with Chloe but it goes nowhere, Lois is really the only one who stayed
Um what show were you watching? Clark dumped Lana and told her he didn't love her after telling Chloe he didn't want to hurt Lana YET found it in himself to break up with her foolishly and hurt her MORE in the process KNOWING she suffered from abandonment issues. She spent the ENTIRETY of season 3 trying to be with/be there for Clark when all he did was push her away and only found it in himself to fully commit himself to her when it was too late. Lana didn't betray Clark...She was SINGLE and naive to trust Lex but that doesn't make her evil...She was hurt and devastated after what Clatk did and saw Lex as the loving friend/partner who wouldn't hurt or lie to her something Clark OFTEN did. She was forced to marry Lex to protect Clark's secret and made the ultimate sacrifice by absorbing kryptonite for Clark and the greater good...Lana has made PLENTY of sacrifices for Clark and ALWAYS gets the blame for "hurting" Clark when he's done nothing but hurt and lie to Lana majority of the time. It's not fair....Lana has gone through the most with Clark....Lois gets all the credit for basically doing nothing it's ridiculous.
it sucks sometimes. it feels like the hero sometimes has to make sacrifices to become the hero the world needs to be. the hero doesn't usally get a happy ending.

Jermaine Smit That's subjective. At the pilot, half of Clark's face was shrowded in darkness like here at 1:32 (on the right side of the frame). At 1:42, the right side of Lois's face was illuminated by light as to show us that she is the one that can fill Clark up with light. Lana was never able to that. She was only able to pull him down. In the pilot, when Clark said "it's perfect", only half his face was truly bright while the other half was bright, but not as bright as it could be, showing us that Lana was never gonna be able to push Clark to his full potential. This is subjective too ofc.

Smallville's just been the gist of the Superman legend anyway. And so much has happened early (Lex and Clark being enemies, the Justice League, heroes and villains being slightly different. I'd like to see the series end with Lana back and them together. Their on and off relationship made me want to see them make it.
