- In this episode of DD, Aaron goes over all the key differences between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton Dentside Ford trucks. Ford made some interesting decisions with these trucks to include cab, frame, and motor selection across all the different models. We will unlock those differences in this episode.
My 1979 F150 Ranger 4x4 regular cab long bed came right off the line with the 400/C6/205. My fathers 1978 F150 Ranger 4x4 short bed also came new with the 400. he bought it brand new and still has it.
The 400 engine option was available on the 78/79 Broncos and all were 4x4.
77 was first year for 351m or 400..
my 78 f250 lariat 4x4 was ordered with the 400m 4 speed and i couldn't sell it for the last 2 previous summers at 4000 with the winch and new tires clutch package completely new brake system new water pump power steering pump and resealed engine....and now i don't want to sell it anymore i get offers 😂
haha, well that worked out then!
No such thing as a 400m. I reckon you’re talking about 78-79 when saying the half ton 4wd didn’t have the 400. Because, my 77 F150 4wd has the 400. I absolutely love it. It runs like a sewing machine.
F350 Super Camper Special with it's funky bed and long driveshaft
I got one
@@bobcooper8589 Did Ford ever make a F350 Super Camper Special on 4x4? . I have looked at two of them ,both 2 wheel drive. . One was completely rotten, the other had the spare tire bay chopped out for a huge propane tank
@@Daniel-Weavernope. 2wd only
@@Daniel-Weaverwe have a 74
One has 8 lug wheels the other has 5. Saved everyone a few minutes of their lives.
In 1981 my friend had a 75' or 76' F250 4x4. He bought a good used 68' 390 GT V8 for that truck. It moved a lot better. Another friend installed a 428 CJ that was even better. I miss the 70's Ford pickup truck. Today pickup aren't cool the old pickup truck.
My fathers ‘77 F250 4x4 Crewcab had the short box alright, I hadn’t realized you could only get the short box on a Crewcab. I guess the crewcab long box trucks I remember seeing were pre 1973 bump side models.
One interesting note, my father’s truck had a Winnebago brand truck cap on it complete with the Winnebago logo on both sides and it had come from the dealer with that cap. To this day I have never seen another Winnebago brand truck cap.
Only the 4x4 CC were SB. There were CCLB but they were 2wd.
My 78 f150 4x4 came with a factory 400, numbers matching engine, even measured the crank throw during a rebuild.
My 1979 F150 Ranger 4x4 regular cab long bed came right off the line with the 400/C6/205. My fathers 1978 F150 Ranger 4x4 short bed also came new with the 400. he bought it brand new and still has it.
I enjoy watching your videos, but you left out one engine option. The 300 inline 6 , I grew up in farm country and most farmers that had fords had them with 300 4spd 4x4.
F 350 4x4 was available in 1979 only all previous years were F 250 F100 or F 150 after 1975
Since they were so largely made to be work trucks, i don't know why people preferred short beds. Your lumber would hang out. A sheet of drywall and plywood is 4'x8', same size as in bed between wheel wells and length of the bed. Longbed holds a toolbox and still gives the short bed amount of usable bed... The list keeps going
As a engine option you could also get the 300 in line 6 in both half and 3 quarter and i think 1 ton trucks 2wd and 4wd and the 302 in 2wd. correct me if im wrong
F150s had the same engine options as f250s
Also could get 4:10s in a half ton but its very rare
That's a great comparison between these F-Series trucks such as the F150 1/2 ton F250 3/4 ton as well as F350 1 ton trucks in terms of available options
Thanks for posting !!!!!
thanks for watching!
In 1975, I went to buy a new 3/4 ton, 4x4 with a camper package. Ford would not give me both. A 1975 ford F-250, 4x4, XLT package, 360 2bbl, sliding rear window, locking hubs was $7,800. Yet you said a 1979 was $6,700? The price went down! Don’t think so. Up til buying my truck, all I had weee fords. But ford wouldn’t give me what I wanted. No 4bbl, no camper package AND 4wheel drive, no factory tie downs. Chevy was lower in height, factory tie downs plus stabilizers (shocks from top back of fender to camper), 4bbl, sliding rear window, bigger alternator and radiator, dual batteries, fuel tank skid plate, Cheyenne Super pkg for $6,300.
The most overloaded pickup I ever saw was a 1997 F-150 with 4 tractor trailer axles with brake drums. He came into the scrapyard twice loaded like that. I told him he was nuts. He told me, he paid $100 for the truck and he was going to get his money’s worth.
I once drove a 79 F150 down the highway with about 3k lbs of stone in the rear!
price depended on rrim.and options. tou could gor down of you took less.parts
Bolt pattern on rims 5 bolt for 1/2 ton ,8 bolt pattern on 3/4 ton and 1 ton the 1 ton and 3/4 ton have floating rear ends as well
Dont forget the club cab version
I had a 1979 F 150 4x4 supercab long bed. 351M/C6/ NP203. It actually had leaf springs all around.
Yeah I don’t know if that was covered. I think the supercab half-tons all had leafs up front. Not sure if that was a 4x4 or 4x2 difference.
@ryanmcardel8764 all 4x4 supercav 150s were built on a leaf spring. the 2wd still had coil fronts
General Motors was the same with their 4X4's in regards to the big block engine. Maybe both manufacturers felt that the big block engine would be too much power for the transfer case.
I have a 1979 f250 supercab short bed 4x2 ranger xlt with a 460
Very cool, yes those truck were available as short beds and the 460s. Ford only offered the 460 in the 2wd trucks and the supercabs as shortbeds were only available as 2wd. A 4wd shortbed would have required Ford to manufacture another frame for what they probably deemed as not a hot seller.
My 1979 f150 1/2 ton 4x4 has a 400 from the factory though. ???
as it could be and usally was.
gear options
1_2 ton 3.50/4.10
3/4 1ton 3.55/4.11s
the 400 was optional.in a 1_2 ton and bronco..
all this is documented
Look at the wheels, you can tell 1/2 ton 3/4 ton and the 1 ton, easy way to tell
The main difference is the coils womt turn your inside to jelly after 50 miles. Lol.
Hah, I like the leaf springs but a lot of people agree with you.
@DentsideDepot my Das had two 76 high boys then a 76 f150. All 4x4. The f150 drove like a dream. I am currently putting together two 1972 f100 4x4. Most people aren't hauling huge loads witu anymore, and it'll still get my wakenoard boat to the lake. Lol.
In the halftones trucks they were 3:50 gears
Yes, I said that in the video. 3.00 or 3.50
@@DentsideDepot didn't hear that good video
@@steveshepperson8725 all good thanks for watching and commenting. I don't know everything but that came right out of the Ford book.
@@DentsideDepotwhew. You must got good neighbor there with that epic assy of ford trucks. They ever make a 3/4. Ton with 5. Lug wheels😮😮
@@gerry-p9x all 3/4 tons were 8 luggers. When you have tire machines people around you are happy lol
I have a 79 f150 4x4 super cab with a 8 ft box 351m ft leaf spring suspension no lock out hubs. I'm not sure but I think it's a rare truck. Bought it from original owner for $150. 20 years ago.
f150 supers are harder to find.
Great video as always! Was the lack of the 460 for emission/fuel consumption reasons in the larger trucks?
My bet is clearance issues, a 460 in a Bronco or F150 4x4 fits with not much room for the power steering box and hoses. The box mounts on the outside of the frame. The F250 steering box mounts inside the frame, so there’s not really enough room left.
I’ve got a 4x4 supercab 1/2 ton
My 79 f150 vin F14SPEGxxxx...S = 400 correct? Parents purchased new off the dealer lot, never had a different owner to swap..
Bro same. I have a 79 f150 with a 400 that was passed down from my great-grandfather that shouldn't have ever had a swap.
My 1979 F150 Ranger 4x4 regular cab long bed came right off the line with the 400/C6/205. My fathers 1978 F150 Ranger 4x4 short bed also came new with the 400. he bought it brand new and still has it.
s is correct code for the 400ci option.
Your light green F-250 custom, is that the original height or does it have a lift in it? If so, how much lift? Thanks!
My neighbor who had worked at a Ford garage in the 70's told me all about ordering parts from Ford and modifying vehicles before customer take delivery. Engines, transmissions, axles and springs and air conditioning. So there are a lot of "factory" options that were actually dealer options.
anything can be changed after the fact. Dealer AC, cruise, and all the accessories were available over the counter for these trucks. The brochures even highlighted that this was possible to do.
@@DentsideDepot I just don't think it's mentioned nearly enough. How much work the dealerships actually did. If a guys grandpa had a "factory" 460, limited slip front, camper special F150. They might not be lying.
@@DefaultSettings9 No they would be lying, you could never get that from the factory. The parts to make that were never made. No motor mounts from Ford for that conversion, no conversion exhaust manifolds for 4wd trucks, no camper special harnesses designed for a 117" frame. If thats what you wanted back then, you had to get a 250 or 350.
Best trucks - loce the old trucks
What wheels are on the teal truck? They make those that fit a square body chevy 1ton in black?
The green truck has billet aluminum wheel smith wheels 17x9. Yes, they make custom wheels for every application.
Somebody should build a 4x4, coil spring, Supercab, short bed, 460, 4 speed F150. I'm waiting.
I have a 1976 Crewcab long box at my shop. I’m pretty sure it’s factory.
2wd f350 crews were longbow all 4x4s were shortbed.
Did the supercab f150s use a f250 frame?
Yes, there basically 5 lug f250s
I have been looking at a 79 F36 vin 133"wb 8550 gvw. The front axle is a dana 44. Could this truck have come with the 44, or has it been swapped?
it's been swapped down. shoulda had a dana 60 front.
If you think I missed something comment down below!
In the 4x4
Easy - 8 lug wheels/hubs on the 250 and up. 5,6 or 7 on the 150s. Engines in any of these 40 plus years later is a craps shoot if looking in a salvage yard as they all fit whatever with some other parts juggling. i.e trans, driveshafts, differentials etc.
Ya left out transfer case. Both came with NP205. But the f150 was married to the transmission. The f250 and f350 were divorced from the transmission.
Not in 78-79
all the trucks he has mentioned.habe a married case. and 203 or 205 were the options.
3/4 got a bigger knob
knob?
