      Have a 2006 Stratus 2.4 with 210,000 and still going. Engine never had problems, but other parts are junk. One of the dumbest things they went with was using a plastic mount for the radiator filler neck. There was a hair line leak where the radiator hose connected. I was able to tear that part in half with my hands. It felt like ripping up wet cardboard. But overall I've been happy with the engine. It loves synthetic oil.

    Great video. Neighbor asked me to get their car ready for sale and the water pump was the task.. Just a note for a DIY like myself. Remove the engine mount and the side mount bolts. Adjusting the engine up and down is tremendous advantage in accessing the bolts on various brackets on the front of the engine. also need to remove all line fasteners thatfor lines that pass in front of the engine. This video is spot on, thanks again. Max

    This video was really done properly. I liked the details - using the whiteout to mark the positions of the timing gears; inserting the long bolt into the pump etc. very informative and thanks. I was actually in search of removing and installing front struts on a Dodge Stratus and some idiot made the dumbest videos that left me more ignorant than before I viewed them, so it is refreshing to have come across your video so well done.

    I've got a 2001 Dodge Stratus and it has been a nightmare with an array of problems that just seem to pop-up randomly every other month. Tomorrow I gotta replace the serpentine belt. Watching this video clarified every question I had. Let me tell you that you are doing an awesome job posting up these videos for us DIY'ers. May God continue to bless you with your talents. Thank you for sharing this video to the world.

    Mark the belt with paint in relation to each cam and crank sprocket. then count the teeth, transfer the marks to new belt. It 100% makes belt install simpler and spot on.

    Seems like my motor is too close to the pass side? The balancer pulley will not slide far enough to come off the crankshaft. The motor mount is off completely and the motor is just hanging from the 2 rear motor mounts and it`s still hitting the car frame.
    So far your video has been very valuable.

    Great video. Helped with the steps of what needs to come off. But then, at the end you recommend using a hammer on the balancer/pulley and then using the crank bolt to install it??? While I did this method many times in my youth, the one time an older mechanic was there hanging out, said "absolutely do not use the crank bolt to install that! Get a balancer install tool." Didn't listen... Not a 2000 miles later the motor blew apart. We had installed a gear drive to replace the timing chain. We figured we did something wrong with the gear drive but turned out that the crank bolt threads had stripped, the balancer walked off a bit and then the gear drive fell apart. Expensive motor to junk because we took a shortcut😒

  • @joelclark1641

    Yes, I agree with everyone - great vid - very informative --- HOWEVER --- and that's a big HOWEVER, you spent very little time on the put it back together project!!!! My 06 Stratus is a 2nd vehicle, thank goodness because it's been on jacks in my driveway for two days now. I keep coming back to your video, and one other on the '06 year model....and to my amazement, I have gotten all the way to the water pump!!!! YAY!! There are some major things to figure out when putting it all back....like how do get that xxxking crankshaft pulley back on?? How to you "clamp" the camshaft pulleys to get the belt on, when there's nothing to clamp them to? And now I'm wondering...how the hell do you get both the engine mount and the engine to mount brackets in??? I can get either one in by itself, but then can't get the other one in! WTF!!! Anyway, I haven't given up yet, hopefully something will come to me quickly! I have two statements to make: 1) Don't buy a Dodge. I have it straight from a customer service person with Dodge that the reason they design the vehicles the way they are is because they want you the customer to go back to the dealer to have repairs made. They don't want the customers to get hurt while working on the vehicle - - LOL, BS - they want your money. 2) If you're a backyard mechanic, like me, don't do this work - it isn't worth it. I had 3 estimates done on this project, average of $495 labor (that's not a Dodge dealer!). I have spent 2 days working on it - just beginning to put back together - it's just not worth it!!
    Now, if you can help me with the mounts - I'd sure appreciate it!!!!
    Joel

    Great video and very helpful but I have one major question. The motor mount plate does not want to come out with any amount of jacking the engine up or letting it down. It looks like the motor mount is already removed in the video yet I'm not sure how that's possible. There's a hard line plumbed right above it and there's no where for it to go. Is there some trick I'm missing? I've watched the video a couple times looking for something but it seems like it skips from removing the alternator to already having the plate loose. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @nuclearsteve3639
      @nuclearsteve3639 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Suede53 The hard line that you are talking about has some small metal straps, two of them, towards the front and rear of the car that hold it in place, then hoses are connected to either end. Unbolt the straps (small bolts that take an 8 or 10 mm socket or wrench) and then lift up on the hard pipe to move it out of the way enough to remove the engine mount.

  • @Oerstec

    You mentioned in the video that you would post a video link giving more detail on the timing belt tensioner. Did you get a chance to do that? Before putting the belt on I experimented with the 1/4" ratchet to move the notch over the end of the spring. I can never get it to move that far. It just binds up and the notch doesn't rotate very far. I tried taking it off and on and having different amount of looseness on the tensioner bolt but can't get it to work. Any idea what's going on?
    Thanks

  • @bdubs98
    @bdubs98 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    To put the engine mount bolts back in start with the back engine mount first. Do not put the front and right side bolts in until the engine mount in the rear is well started. This should help as the engine will have the most up and down movement without the front and right side mounts bolted. Also, move the jack around on the oil pan to help put the engine in the correct position. Also, you should not have to remove the alternator or bracket.

    hi i have a 2001 dodge stratus with the same engine as this one, when you first turn it on it doesnt make any noise, but the hotter the engine gets the louder a steady clicking noise it makes. when you push the gas pedal a little bit it quits making the noise. if you put your head next to the passanger front tire, you can hear it better. couple a points here guy seems like a good mechanic but a few issues first I I use vise grips to lock the camshafts in place easy easy, second it never amazes me more! why? do these guys work harder to get the belt off I just cut the dam thing and get it out of the way!!!! what??? you gonna reuse it?? another point and while most cars will never get far enough to get down the road to need another change, you should still practice good mechanical practices like putting antiseize compound on anything with dissimilar metals just thinking about the next mechanic that would have to deal with a frozen and broke off/striped bolt/ spark plug/whatever it just takes a second guys or girls! use the stuff!!!, I'm so tired of fixing old repaires by a guy that does not practice good mechanical work thanks

    • @fixingcarsandstuff

      Well, yes what a pain, such poor clearance space. You need to be able to jack up the engine pretty high on the timing belt end, that is what helps the most. I am sure it strains the other engine mounts but it has to go high. I will try to get more detailed video maybe sometime in the future...

    One quick question. My 06 dodge stratus is like revving if you step on the gas real hard. After the timing belt went bad. Some mechanics say its a sensor other say it has bent valves and other say its the transmission.

    • @fixingcarsandstuff
      @fixingcarsandstuff  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      israel cabrera are you saying the engine revs up (rpms increase) but the car doesn't really move/accelerate? Manual or Automatic transmission? If rpms go up but the car doesn't really speed up then it is likely a slipping clutch or problem with the automatic transmission

    • @Siempre_azulcrema5
      @Siempre_azulcrema5 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats right! Autimatictransmission. Yeah when i step on tha gas really hard it revs up and down. (On park) When im driving and i step on the gas normal its normal nothing wrong with it. Unles im driving and i step on the gas hard it revs up and down like you're saying and it does not speed up. I went to the Mechanic yesterday and he told me is the transmission ans I yold him its not. But now now that you're telling me its the transmission I'm taking it back to the shop. $950 is that fair? ... Man thank you for replying. Thanks a lot! Have a great holiday.

    When you jacked up the engine did you remove any motor mounts or is the engine fairly movable while still mounted? Also, where do you jack it? At the oil pan?

    • @chanandler.bong16

      +Alexdemoted for some reason they did not show the motor mount being removed. The video goes from removing the alt bracket to removing the motor mount bracket from the engine. It threw me off at first when I was changing my timing belt earlier today...

    A couple of things are confusing to me. At 11:20 in the video he is moving the alternator out of the way and says to be careful not to let the battery wire touch ground. Didn't he think to disconnect the battery before even starting? I thought that was standard practice on any engine work. Also he keeps calling the alternator a "generator". Cars haven't had generators since the early 1960's.

      I agree with billrock12. The guy took the time to make a video that helps people who are trying to do this and if you morons had any damn brains you would know that the hot lead has a rubber grommet that covers it making it almost impossible to short out in most cases. If it has an exposed lug then it doesn't take that much care to keep it from shorting out against the car body. I have worked on a million cars and I can tell you that the dealerships don't pull the battery cable on every job they do. In fact it is a bad idea to cause the computer and all the programmable accessories to lose their memory in some instances. They only make those recommendations in the service manuals for the DIYers because they know what kind of idiots are out there trying to do this type of work themselves. Just like life it is idiots like you trolls who have ruined our world with warning labels on everything around us. I try to use common sense. You can safely do this job just as he did without shorting the alternator out on the car. I give 2 thumbs up to the mechanic that took the time to try to help others. 2 thumbs down for all the haters who need bottle fed because they are not smart enough to handle a hot wire without shorting it out and burning their car down!!!

    • @edwardmyers8782
      @edwardmyers8782 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, first part of any automotive work on an engine is disconnected, the ground this is not trolling it is a fact and it is for safety reasons, while this video is very helpful this is a serious violation and can actually get you fired from most professional shops. Calling correct, constructive criticism, " fucking trolls talking shit" is well proof that you are an idiot talking shit, instead except the advice, follow it and you can avoid the damage to the electrical systems tools and occasional fire resulting in bodily injury death any loss of vehicle and shop, that can occur by not following a simple safety rule.

    I had a 96 stratus and it was over heating and I got the water pump replaced and they did a shitty job at replacing it, after it was replaced the whole motor was rocking and shaking and they wouldn't even return my calls so I had it worked on again somewhere else, and it was not timed up right, but they could not figure out why it was rocking and shaking, they said everything looked normal. well it only shock when coming to a stop or at take off.

    • @2stage90
      @2stage90 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Front mount by front bumper out, remove passenger side mount. Pu block of wood on jack and put that under the oil pan to "maneuver" the engine....Belt and water pump bills under 5 hours customer pay on Pro Demand (shops use for bill time)... Did one today and work at a Chrysler shop. PT's are worse than this one but if your doing it your bill is gonna be around a grand most likely. GL

    I have a 2006 dodge stratus sxt 2.4l DOHC and I did the same exact thing in this video to replace the timing belt. I timed it 3 times now. And its throwing a P0016 code, Camshaft/crankshaft misalignment. Do you have any idea why it could be throwing this code? It starts and runs but after it idles down it kinda lopes and when you press the gas it revs up but when you let off it dies. I've replaced the cam sprockets water pump timing belt wires spark plugs coil pack fresh oil harmonic balancer. If you have any advice please let me know. Thank you.

      They are a giant pain in the ass. Most 2.7's are in the junkyard right now. I have 3 that all failed with the same crankshaft oiling problem. You will need to take your radiator out but it is doable with the engine still in but is a big job.

    Ya I've done many of these a little advice to anyone doing one of these jobs themselves on they're vehicles keep track of every bolt where it came out of where its supoosed to go back in and take all the proper steps in order and pull all the bullshit out of your way yank those power steering and condenser lines the electrical harness the thermostat housing if you can afford a new intake manifold gaskets then pull the intake off as well get shit out your way and put a good jack under that engine support it well have stand or a solid something to rest it on and get yourself some new engine mounts for putting it back together with change the oil seal rings and cam shaft oil catch mount make sure it is sealed with the good silicone same with the waterpump use the correct freekn silicone with the stupid weak ass gasket that comes with the new timing kit Amazon got it all for under a hundo valve cover gasket kit too do it all if your going to do this job you will be happier and better off if you do it all and do it correctly cutting corners will make those things your worst enemy instead of your running reliable vehicle

    Why ask questions when you're never going to get an answer? Most of these videos are almost useless. Mechanic all my life, but I still need information, and I just can't find it. Good thing I know a lot of other mechanics! LOL seems like everybody hates Chrysler anymore. And I can't blame them. Chrysler Engineers are smoking crack.

  • @thatguyyoudontknow
    @thatguyyoudontknow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    And isn't that the real killer? While I know shops need to make money, charging me "7 hours labor" for something that can take less than an hour to a skilled mechanic is a slap in the ass. I work on cars, but that is something I have never had to deal with. Now, my damn Stratus decided it was time for the belt to break. The people working on mine are honest blokes, but I still haven't gotten the final numbers yet....

    • @fixingcarsandstuff
      @fixingcarsandstuff  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charlie Chan that is the question that comes up all the time. For the mechanic that can do it in a couple hours, you feel you are getting ripped off, but the mechanic that takes 10 hours.... would you want to pay for 7 hours or for 10 hours? Times for most every job are provided by the manufacturer, and that is what most shops base their estimates on.
