  • In this video I will go over how to service the transmission on your Lexus LS400. There are a few ways to go about this. First of all, the simplest and safest thing to do is a fluid change. You simply unbolt the drain plug and drain the fluid out, install the drain plug and refill the transmission. Second, you can drain the fluid, remove the pan and remove the strainer/filter element and replace it, reseal the pan and fill it. The third option is a transmission flush, done with a transmission service machine. This is typically done at shops and does come with some risk.

Some tips: Always make sure mating surfaces are DRY and not contaminated with residue from any kind of cleaner, or your own fingers. It is IDEAL to let sealant sit and dry for at least 24 hours before adding fluid and operating the vehicle. I did not do that.
Additionally, there is a switch located on the valve body on some models, honestly not 100% sure which ones. This switch allows you to change the line pressure in the transmission and create a more aggressive shifting profile I believe. if you're interested in this little mod, I suggest you do it when the pan is off.
There are gaskets available for this pan, you can try to use a gasket, it may require sealant as well, but using sealant only is an option and in my opinion the way to go.

Transmission fluid service is too often overlooked on Toyotas, especially these 90s cars. Thanks for making this video!

Reputable transmission shop told me he recommends changing the toyota/lexus metal screen type filters like the one on this car every 100k

@@vgbr88 Id say thats fair. the fluid can be done more often, depending on the mileage. a drain and fill is easy and cheap. doing the screen/strainer probably shouldnt be done all that often. 100k is probably fine honestly

    Some notes:
Before applying sealant, I applied alot of brake clean, and probably didnt wait long enough for it to dry/clean it up well enough.
I also added fluid in immediately after I put the pan back on. I would suggest waiting 24 hours to let the sealant cure before you fill it with fluids and heat it all up.
Also: There is a switch located on the valve body on these LS400s that can be changed to change the line pressure (I believe) and give you a more aggressive profile on your transmission. I did not do this personally, nor did I go over it in the video. But if this is a mod you are interested in, NOW IS THE TIME TO DO IT when the pan is off
Finally: comment AUTO below for your chance to win some Superclean products! Thanks Superclean and all my viewers!

Awesome video. Trying this now on the 99' LS400 and everything looks similar except the dang exhaust pipe bracket in front of the pan is in the way and the transmission pan doesn't drop as easily as it did on your 94' LS400. And it's so difficult to remove that bracket because I may cause a leak on that pipe maybe? And that thing is very rusty. I tried bend the bracket out of the way of pliers, but no luck so far.

I would def be careful, is it the pipe for the dipstick tube? if you can unbolt any hanger or bracket that allows it to move out of the way slightly, that may be worth doing even if its an extra step
