Oh wow that inclusion of the "hidden" runes on the back of the map is GENIUS. A magical touch. Thanks so much for your review, will definitely be adding this to my collection!
I can feel you! I would be also angry about all those things. Specially because you don't pay for a paper back copy but for a deluxe edition! It should be properly done :(
That's a pitty with the bottom of the spine. I do have a book with the same problem, but it's hidden behind a (luckily) quite nice dustcover :D I don't have The Hobbit yet. I only have the german version of The Lord of the Rings from the Klett-Cotta company. It's one big volume but it's so marvelous! It's a special edition they pressed for the 125th birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien. Nice video!
My copy was damaged in transit too. However the seller only put it in a bubble wrap envelope which really pissed me off. I'm going to be ordering another copy of it soon which I hope will be better packaged.
@@FoolishFishBooks It was mostly the slipcase which was badly knocked & bumped but some of those knocks went right through & damaged the book itself. Really did my nut in as the book itself is mostly really well put together. Thankfully the fiftieth anniversary edition of my Lord of the Rings book was from a diferent supplier & really well packaged. The book was immaculate, not The Hobbit though. A shame some people are just after a quick buck with no regard to despatching their book to arrive in pristine condition. Makes me angry.
@@FoolishFishBooks Well, I've just ordered another copy of it off eBay. Fingers crossed this one is okay when it arrives otherwise I will contact the Dark Lord himself, Sauron & he can send the Nazgul round to them!!
@@FoolishFishBooks It was largely down to this review of yours that I ordered the first copy. Hopefully everything this time will be okay. I do love Tolkien.
When one is paying top dollar for what is touted as a top quality item, one expects better attention to detail. Piano2525 had the right of it. Properly done is the only way to go. 👍
Hey! This video wasn't published very recently, but I was hoping you could tell me about the sizes of the slipcase editions and maybe provide me with ISBNs. I'm looking for the slipcase editions of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. It seems they are not the same height? Is that true for the other slipcase editions as well?
A nice edition, anyway, despite its faults. It reminds me a bit of the Folio edition of the same title. The Folio edition is bound in a sort of paper, too, it might as well be parchment or something like that. The binding and the cover design I must confess is absolutely superior to this edition, it has an intricate golden over a reddish pink background. Very elegant. But, as for the contents, there is no match: this one is by far better. I think the reproductions of Tolkien's illos really enhance the reading experience. The Folio edition has illustrations too, but they are little inspired, imho. All in all Tolkien is one of those authors I may never stop collecting over and over again and yet ... I still fail to see the perfect editions of both The Hobbit and TLOTR (mind that I have the Folio edition, Houghton and Mifflin, Easton press...)!!!
I have the Folio editions myself - bought them precisely because of their illustrations. I do like Alan Lee's illustrations the best, but the ones in the Folio editions have a different style which is more reminiscent - to me - of old saga literature and classic fairy tales. And, of course, the ones in the LotR set is based on the illustrations of Ingahild Grathmer - better known as Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The Folio books also seem _just_ a tad heavier than I would expect for their size, which I like. And the font seems _just_ a tad smaller, too, than most books - which I also happen to like. As much as I love the Folio editions, however, they still don't represent my ideal of a perfect edition. To me, that would be the about the same dimensions as the Folio edition (which would mean LotR as a trilogy rather than single volume), but cloth bound, and with Alan Lee's illustrations.
They may not be perfect, but we really are spoiled for choice with Tolkien editions. There are so many older authors I love (including Tolkien's contemporaries) who are only a little less well-known than Tolkien (CS Lewis, Mary Renault...) and forget about deluxe editions, it's a struggle finding even a decent hard copy of their works, without an utterly hideous cover.
@@FoolishFishBooks Oh yaaah, one of my brothers plays that game. Goodness, it's really beautiful. I got to admit, doing a voice for a video game would genuinely be a dream come true 😊

I have got this edition based on this review here in 2021 , and this book is now in its 11th printing
