Great looking fly. Having tied and fished thousands of chironomid patterns for close to 50 years, I firmly believe representing the gill is important when imitating chironomid pupa. That’s not to say flies minus breathers don’t work, but when examining live bugs, the gills are prominent and should be incorporated into imitations.

Cheers Mark, your right about the fish not particularly caring about the breathers but the thing is if your fishing your flies with breathers and getting great result then it gives you great confidence to keep tying them that way , thanks Mark 👍🎣🐟

@@alecharveyfishingandflytying We’ve been using the flex floss as rib material for quite some time. As in your pattern, it is a superb product used to represent segmentation. Pull it tight for narrower ribbing on smaller patterns, wrap it loosely on larger flies. On very small flies we split the floss vertically using a dubbing needle to create a narrower strand which also helps keep the profile slim, which is an important aspect of pupa design. Black floss ribbing over a chrome body with breathers under the thorax make for a dynamite chironomid. UV resin coating to finish and you have a durable, very effective pattern. Great videos!

If I send my fly down amongst a million hatching chironimids,is that not million to one a fish will take my fly?

    Greetings from British Columbia, Canada.
I’ve been watching several of your videos, really interesting discovering the contrasting techniques used in the UK. Here we’re only allowed 1 fly on the leader, and when it come to chironomid fishing it’s all about matching the naturals as closely as possible, especially size and colour.
In my area most chironomids are size mostly 14 to 18 and matching the size can be critical to having a great vs so so day. We use a throat pump once we catch a fish to sample see what’s being eaten. Wondering how big the buzzers are over there, as I’ve seem a few videos where a size 8 is used.
Some of the flies used over there seem quite bizarre compared to what is typically used here, that being said they seem to be very effective for you. I’m going to try a couple of UK patterns next season, not sure what if the wild fish here will appreciate the effort.

We call them Buzzers over here and they do differ in sizes on our lakes, the Large waters the trout feed on very big ones size 8 and 10 but on our small still waters size 14 to 18 are the size to use in mid summer.
A few years back I fished over there at Kamloops for the fly championships and really enjoyed the area.
Yes on most lakes we could only use 1 fly but one of the competitions was at a private quarry and everyone was allowed 3 flies on their cast as in uk Loch style fishing .
Yes please tie and use some of the flies I am sure you will catch plenty of fish.tight lines 🎣🐟

How do you fish it? I’m used to have cdc at the top for it to not sink.

They are fished on a floating line, normally with 2 or 3 on the leader and fished very slowly or static through the depths, great takes when the fish take them 👍🎣🐟
Check out my other fishing video Dancers and Buzzer rush, and will see how they are fished 👍

Hi Alec, thats a great wee buzzer and one i use myself. Your right. A lot of fancier buzzers seem to catch more fisherman the fish! 🤣
Spot on video once again, keep them coming. Thanks Ewan. 👍

Thanks Ewan, I definitely have more success on more natural buzzers than ones you could hang on a Xmas tree🤣🤣 They are to catch anglers more than trout 👍🎣🐟
