The worst thing I've found on the canals is the veterans with silly little caps and neckers who get angry at the smallest infringement of holidaymakers. Leaves a nasty taste and invites a retort: two words ending in off.

I know this vlog is two years old but it's still very useful to me and I love the way you explain things. I say this because I'm planning on going on to the water hopefully with a 9 or 10 ft beam. Hi Vic, I just wanted to say how nice it is watching your blogs, your honesty and and informative and earthy narration. I look forward to watching the blogs and keep an eye open for the next one. I would love to holiday on the canals once I return to England, and see if its really for me, Oz is slightly lacking for the canal challenge. Regards to people, good and bad, its the bad ones that make you appreciate the good ones more. You managed the situation like a pro, there is no telling to what length reprisals may take and escalate. take care, stay safe, looking forward to the next one.

Not one of my most enjoyable videos, but showed a few of the problems that boaters get!
We borrowed a canal boat in 2009, first time for both of us. We traveled up the canal and the only place we could moor was outside a pub in Harlow. What a mistake that was. We went to the pub for food and I could see a boat moor next to ours, the guys were walking over the boat checking it out. We went straight back to the boat and they disappeared. That night a few cars pulled up in the car park doing skids and stuff waking us up. About 2am the first boat came back and we could here people walking on our boat and trying the front door. I foolishly poked my head out and they ran off. This went on until about 5am. We managed to get some sleep. But that made me nervous for the rest of the week, especially at night. But we didn't have anymore trouble.
People watch all these Narrowboat videos, and they imagine that its all lovely. Most of it is nice, but as in all walks of life, you get some crap along the way. Thanks for sharing your Narrowboat story Tamar!

You could get a little folding pull along trolly to help take the water to your boat, You could do it in one trip then :-)
I'd need a big water container (80 litres) to do it in one trip! Anyway I don't mind the exercise!
Old times there would have been a young one around those mooring areas who would look to earn some small income to do those chores for people

The problem is that the UK is vastly overpopulated, overcrowding causes so many stresses on everyone's daily lives and means everything we do is restricted by more and more rules and lowers the quality of life for almost everyone

😠 - I would ignore him, until I get infuriated enough to call the police (on the non-emergency number), to report it, and might call the C&RT to get permission to cover the sign up - see if that would encourage him to stop shouting from his balcony, and to take the effects of the lockdown seriously, and not the mooring rules. 🙄

Can't see what the bloke's problem was: If you departed after 14 days and your spot was immediately taken by another narrowboat...who stayed another 14 days...what's it to him?
Maybe he just got tired of your boat...wanted a change of scenery!

I would suggest that you move out of the U.K. Or your going to have a heart attack. Life is too short to let your problems consume you. If people are jerks (and they can be), try mooring in a rural area. Go into populated areas for food, boat needs, and some entertainment. Or, do like I do and find your happy thought. I to am too old to let the little things bother me. As an example, I live in Houston, TX. Where it’s wall to wall with fast driving. To get anyplace requires lots of patients. I use to think of driving like a video game dodging in and around as many cars to score points. One day was was rear-ended and had my back broken because I drove too slow even though I was 15 kilometers over the speed limit. It was while I was in Hospital that I decided driving was just a way to get from one place to the other and not a high pressure game of sorts. Now a days, I drive during off hours, keep in the slow lane, and enjoy views I missed by going too fast. Going too fast in life seems to often to be the problem.
I try to live by those rules also, that's why I moved onto a boat! I came to town to fill my boat with water, etc. And unfortunately got locked down here!

Thank you for talking about the problem's that narrow boats run into, simple water issues. The Lock down should be raised for narrow boats. You guys are all by yourself, my goodness the JOGGER are more than the requirements for space,/Distance. Is British that much of a nanny Police. I would think that People on shore of CANAL should KNOW that the Canals where there LONG before they moved into there flats. The LAW is First in Time. That's my RULE anyway. Narrow Boat's where there hauling cargo LONG before any of these busy body's lived by canals. You are FIRST in TIME on any place you moor up too. You Narrow Boats are always the priority in my book.
It can be idyllic out here! But like all places you do bump into the odd Ahole!

On the subject of nutters/idiots and unwanted hassle, do you ever see any trouble or feel insecure when moored up in urban areas? Guess that is applicable to rural areas too, but not so intimidating!
Hassle is the problem! More people around means more chance of hassle I suppose!
These people have a go at everybody. It's not personal although it feels like it. I bet he has a go at his neighbours, family, shop keepers, they like drama. Their life is empty so they fill it with drama. Any attention for these people is better than no attention. Sad really.

@@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle What I dis in the end was double my battery and alternates and I had my genorater 2.2kva what I got a 120 amp charger and the best thing I did was to lessen the reves and 5l would last 9 hours
@@robintidd8808 I only had 2 leisure batteries when I bought the boat! I've replaced them and added another1, I already have a Sterling Charger connected. And I'm going to buy a generator in the next couple of days, hopefully will make things better.

Unfortunately some people live on the water as a cheap way to live , and there way of life style with there falling to bits boat , still in British Water ways colours carrying dirt bikes mountain bikes etc and regulations large nasty dog , not to mention party time , and this all at the bottom of your garden . Don’t get me wrong there is a lot of retired folk on the water ways who look after they there boats where as they are a thing of beauty and they do not cause noise or nuisance also a few of the same ilk that have had to move on to the Water ways that are a Asset of public spirt .

You are correct, people are the problem. It’s hard to be easy going when others get their jollies ticking you off. As a senior citizen I use my age to act aloof with people that are annoying. If they can’t get to me it gets to them. It’s really not the best way to live but it does keep me calmer.
A few years back it would have been a different story, but now I try to avoid idiots!
You had a right to be on the canal, you should've shown him the licence you pay for and told him to get lost, then you should've reported him to the police for harassment, if he doesn't like narrowboats, he shouldn't have elected to live by a canal MUPPET! 🙄👍

The world is full of arseholes. I have worked in shops for over 30 years and have been called a fkn idiot, and have been punched and spat at many times. Everyone that works in retail knows exactly how stupid people are. You needed to ask if his Family are well, and then ask if his legs are well.

I was wondering about this topic, here in the US we have a lot of entitled people especially in an environment like this. I like to fish in the Sierra mountains, since the pandemic all the folks that would normally travel over seas for their holiday instead head up to the mountains and Piss everyone off. Last summer there were people parking on the main highway, just stopping in the middle of the street because they wanted to get food at a cafe but there was no parking available, then when the police show up these grown ass men start throwing a tantrum about their rights.
People are strange worldwide by the looks of it Robert!

Amazing how many people live next to the canal and don't like boaters, seems silly to me. Lockdown has also brought the worst out in some people, they seem to have all the pent up emotions ready to fly off the handle at any point. But i see the same with people getting boats and no idea of the costs and downsides, so need more honest videos about the life.

Ahh, so you are fattening the curve too, eh Vince. Seems to be a problem for everyone during lockdown. Our current lockdown is supposed to end about Feb. 20/21 but we will see. There are idiots everywhere, and I learned from Dad years and years ago when working in the store, just smile on the outside but give them proper heck on the inside! Kindness is not what they like, they want some sort of argument, but kindness always wins out in the end.
Yes I Will have to show a bit more willpower with them takeaway shops close by! Its hard to do (and I am learning) to turn the other cheek, but only a little bit ha ha! x

folks retiring to live in flats overlooking the seafront with clifftop views around here get extremely uptight when folk in campers & motorhomes legally park after 0600 or 0700 along the road which their flats overlook . I reckon these motor travellers visit because they too enjoy the sea views with ambition to one day retire here too. it’s one thing to price out the indigenous young by encouraging developers to cater for retirement demand but calling the council onto day trippers visiting their desirable location is pretty miserable behaviour in my opinion. another soul moved next to a forest village working mens’ club then launched a campaign to silence the place ….

Hi Vince, I get what you say about winter mooring in a marina I guess a big factor might be how much solar power you get and do you need to have a mains supply and the cost as well, I keep an eye on few boats for sale sites and you do see some boats back up for sale and it does makes me wonder if the boat needs work or if it was someone who narrow boating all rear around is not what they thought it would be, I noticed the picture you have of a lovely little dog on the wall, I think I would need a dog for a boating life, have you thought about getting a dog? I would like another dog but I have still not gotten over the lost for my little dog, Take care buddy and remember what N S Fletcher said.. "Don't let the B......'S grind you down."
The picture is of one of the best friends I ever had, unfortunately he didn't quite make it onto a Narrowboat with me! And yes I am thinking about getting a Dog. But as you know, one day they will break your heart, and that's putting me off the idea a bit. But we shall see!

We are about to buy our first boat and become continuous cruisers. We’ve holidays enough to have seen not only some homeowners hostility to boats, but also owners hostility to hirers too. When all is said and done, it’s something we really want to do. Like you, we will be continuous cruisers until infirmity forces us into a marina in the winters. You’re quite right....people cause most of the problems, and the worst are people who see themselves as some kind of half-assed police. If a narrow boat mooring near him bothers him, he can always move!.....By the way, your engine sounds quite different to me. Is it diesel? Electric?
I don't let them spoil my day though Christopher! The engine is a BMC 1.8 diesel, same as the older London Taxi's! Good luck with the Narrowboat.

Why do you assume he gets subsidised for council tax, is it because he cant speak English well? I can tell you plenty of English people on my estate get "subsidised". You would think them being born here would mean they could have done better for themselves.
