The Auto Industry offered a better mousetrap. People bought autos in increasing numbers as autos increased personal freedom. As the industry grew prices fell. More people could afford an auto. Autos then gave rise to suburbs which is also a better mousetrap. Given the freedom to do so people abandoned the termite mounds of urban living for their own home in the suburbs. Their own little green space. A garage in which to undertake hobbies that require large tools such as woodworking or maintaining your auto. No noisy upstairs neighbors. No stairs at all in many cases. Even apartments in a suburb is a distant second preference compared to one's own home.
The auto industry didn't make us "car dependent;" they provided a product that most people really wanted to give themselves personal freedom. Plus, unlike public transportation in Los Angeles, you don't run the risk of getting stabbed while driving around in your car. I can get in my car and go wherever and whenever I want. You can't say that about public transportation.
That is because the U.S invests more in road infrastructure instead of public transit, so it is less safe, convenient, and reliable . There is plenty of cities out there(outside of North America) that have public transit that I don't worry about being stabbed, and is frequent and reliable enough for me to use at anytime, I do not have to worry about being stuck in traffic and looking for parking lot.

Its funny its going the other way now against cars, even some city's putting back the cable cars and other light transit.
Everything old is new again.
