  • Here's my problem with productivity youtubers - it's not them, it's me. I was a major productivity junkie. I consumed so much productivity and self-improvement content from books, TH-cam videos and social media. In the end, I had to overcome toxic productivity. There's a lot of issues with the online world of productivity, but in spite of that, I still follow Ali Abdaal, Thomas Frank and Matt D'Avella so here's what I've really learnt from them.
    Mentioned:
    Ali Abdaal - / aliabdaal
    Thomas Frank - / electrickeye91
    Matt D'Avella - / @mattdavella

    This is a fantastic video, Akta. Balance is so important, and I was really happy to see that it's the big lesson you ended up sharing! I think all of us are somewhat uncomfortable with the fact that growing as content creators in this genre means doing things that can easily invite toxic comparisons, especially since viewers come in at all sorts of different videos. I know we've all tried to put things out that counter that unintentional message, and I'm really glad that's the one you chose to reinforce.
    Thanks for featuring my work, and keep up with the excellent videos!

      Thank you SO much for watching the video and providing me with so much inspiration 🙏🏽 I was always quite nervous to share my views on productivity on TH-cam because I was scared that people would think I was lazy and not motivated enough, so it’s such a relief that you actually appreciate the angle I took with this video. It’s really nice that you’re so conscious of the message you send across to your audience, and it actually made it somewhat easy to make this video, because I could see those messages clearly in your videos. Thank you for commenting and sharing this video, I seriously can’t thank you enough for everything ❤️ I won’t ever forget it

    Learnings:
    ohhh toxic productivity.
    the process is important than the outcome.
    busy !=productivity
    Being successful as quickly as possible, ask yourself why???
    We are all different.
    Productivity isn't always achievable.

    Productivity advice needs to be tailored & specific too. I had undiagnosed ADHD (inattentive type) until I was 28 years old, almost 29. I also consumed a lot of productivity advice and wondered why most of it didn’t work. For decades I wondered if there was something wrong with me.
    ADHD isn’t always a blessing, but the correct diagnosis is. It wasn’t that I was unproductive or a lazy moral failure. My nervous system worked differently. I needed different techniques to deal with time blindness, motivation deficit, an interest-based attention span with attention dysregulation, hyperfocus, and a lifetime without executive function skills training that worked.
    The first month I was given ADHD meds, I was shocked at how easy productivity, time awareness, and prioritizing were. (Neurotypical brains have this for free w/o spending on meds, therapy, and with less skills training.) It’s so much easier to focus when your brain’s default mode network (relaxed, creative) isn’t distracting your task positive network (focused state) with 20 other thoughts.
    Also I appreciate the executive skills training I get as treatment now. Finally productivity advice that works WITH my biology and psychology, not against it.

    We fall into the trap of “I’ll be happy/worthy when…” The truth is to practice ‘being’ over ‘doing’, and self worth/self compassion over achieving. What I can tell you from my own experience is that the older I have got, the easier it is to ‘be’, and to rest when I need to rest. Thanks for this video.

    So glad I found this video, have not seen the rest of your channel, but certainly will. I had the same problem you mention "toxic productivity", feeling guilty for not achieving more, doing more and thinking I had to do things all the time every second of each day. It was exhausting. So, I unsubscribed for a while from all productivity people, I unfollowed them and set up my priorities. Then followed them back so I can learn, but with a different perspective. Is hard though, specially when you have been praised and taught you are what you achieve. 😅 Hey, but we learned :)) 💚💚💚

      Omg thank you so much Drea for watching and commenting with your own experiences! It’s nice to know I’m not alone with having dealt with toxic productivity! It’s so hard, and even now as I actively choose to slow down and do less, I always feel judged for it as if I’m “lazy” when I know that’s not true, but I love detaching my self worth from my own achievements and I’m glad you’re doing the same 🙌🏽❤️

    Thank you for your video… As Mexican, I can tell we learn since kids that the process is the important part. There’s always a way, so why to worry about it. I know I am shortening this way of living (concept), it is deeper, of course. Anyway, that’s part of reason why we see time in a very different way and work is not necessarily the most important thing in our lives, but family, friends and enjoying life.

    I think the key of learning productivity tips is to apply them to your work so when you are working you know you are maximising of your time It shouldn’t take over your entire life
    If you are guilty of toxic productivity (as I am) you should treat your time off almost as a task and book it in your diary!
    Finally, let’s also not forget the TH-camrs you mentioned may speak in the first person when they present their content as they are selling their brand but they do all have a team of at least a dozen people helping them behind the scene!

    We humans have that bad habit of comparing ourselves to people who are on different journeys than ours,or is it just me ? 😅 I don’t really know but what i know for sure is that i needed your video so much and i can strongly relate❤️ the timing was just perfect since i’ve been feeling really down lately because of consuming the content of this particular lovely trio,Especially Ali,no wonder they’re extraordinary people and their content is out of this world,but sometimes we just have to surrender to the fact that some people are just born lucky..
    i mean as a second year medical student who has aced her finals since day one,learned 4 languages(Arabic,english,french, and spanish), played the guitar and the piano, was a part of the marching band of her school, read a decent amount of good books,volunteered in many charities,participated in Physics olympics and was ranked second on Damascus,I can somewhat compare myself to Ali (except that i didn’t go to Harvard because i couldn’t afford it😂) And yet what did i get out of my hardwork? 0 $. Living in Syria even Adsense is not a thing,it’s restricted here,no wonder doing what i did helped me in my CV while applying to colleges and i was accepted to study medicine at AUB (the American university of Beirut) but what’s the point if i couldn’t afford it ? So i didn’t go and i’m on my second year here in Syria.
    now I literally lost my passion towards everything,including medicine, because of watching all of this productivity stuff, i mean a full-time job working as a doctor in a hospital here gets you 20$ a month,which is 240$ a year,and here’s Ali making 17000$ a week from skill share alone as a passive income😂 that’s literally 70 years of working as a doctor here, 8 hours a day.. How unfair this world can be,and again i really appreciate what those 3 people taught me ,but i had to write this comment just for you people to be grateful for all the opportunities you have,and for the people who are living in poor countries,like me,to stop comparing and underestimating their self worth and to have faith that maybe one day We too can make it! Much love!❤️❤️

      Hi lovely, thank you so much for watching this video and I’m really glad it’s what you needed or that it helped in any small way.
      Firstly you sound like such an incredible person, I don’t know how you’ve managed to accomplish and do so much but you should be so proud of yourself
      You’re so right, sometimes it really is the luck we are born with. Have you read The Unfair Advantage? I think that book really does summarise what you’re saying so well, we all have advantages that sometimes we’re born with eg where we were born. You’re right life is so unfair when you think about things in that way and sometimes we can do everything another person does but not get the same as them. It must be so hard for you seeing the difference in income,
      I think life is about making our own happiness based on our situations and that’s why comparison can be the thief of joy. Your self worth like you said isn’t based on income, productivity or on how you’re doing relative to others. I think this is why understanding our intentions is so important- you may not get the outcome someone else gets, but if you love the things you do and it brings you joy, then in the end it won’t matter because your intention has already been met. Thank you for reminding us all how lucky we are to have the opportunities we have around us , it’s an easy thing to forget ❤️

    Stephen Covey, oh yes. I remember I was 18-19 when I first read it and then got excited and bought the 8 Habits one. What a great book! Totally agree on your point on Productivity as it's not all about that. Actually, there's an interesting quote in Spanish where apparently Napoleon said "Vísteme despacio, que tengo prisa". Translating that to English is literally "dress me slowly as I'm in a hurry" (probably nonsense) but the point or at least my interpretation is that productivity is great but... needs to be intentional and from time to time sharpening the saw is really important (I think it was one of the habits, can't remember if 7th or 8th). Great video :)

    • @Akta
      @Akta  3 ปีที่แล้ว
