- This week, Jon Stewart dives into the happenings at the DNC and the excitement around the Harris-Walz ticket with NYT White House Correspondent and CNN political analyst Zolan Kanno-Youngs and Jill Lepore, Harvard History and Law Professor, The New Yorker staff writer, and author of "The Deadline." Together, they discuss the happenings on the floor, explore how these political gatherings have evolved from smoke-filled rooms of party bosses to the spectacles of today, and examine how political messaging has adapted (or failed to adapt) to the ever-changing media landscape.

"Politicians should wear sponsor jackets like NASCAR drivers, then we know who owns them” -George Carlin.
Words cannot express what a breath of fresh air this show is to our political discourse. To hear people of intelligence actually make substantive arguments, weigh nuance, and cut the sports team narrative bullshit. Thank you Jon for being willing to do what Adlai Stevenson did, and pull back the curtain on the grand performance, for all it may be drowned out in a sea of Party sponsored tiktoks. You've got my comment, like, and subscription. I'm doing my algorithmic part. Rest easy friends, we're going to need you these next few months.
++ tagging every democratic country political podcasters
These are podcasts we want about our politicians too😊
Jon has some academic elitists on his show and asks no pressing questions and you think it's a breath of fresh air? I guess these people are intelligent but they only offer buttresses to the current political climate. The fact that they don't sound like complete idiots while they support the bipartisan hegemony is a testament to a lack nuance. I have no faith left in the people of this country. Good luck with China controling the next half of the century.
He and Colbert kept what is left of my sanity intact.
I must say, I was not
Expecting an Adlai Stephenson reference here.
Nicely done!
Jon, please get Jill for future podcasts. Her enthusiasm is so infectious besides being so knowledgeable about everything.
This!
Heather cox on steroids ❤
Not knowledgeable enough to know that only Harris could use the campaign war chest, field offices and pre-paid tv spots of the Biden/Harris campaign. Anyone else has to start from scratch with $0 or else it's campaign finance fraud. So many hours wasted bloviating about fantasy league picks to replace Biden on the ticket by folks that should know better.
Absolutely! She was fabulous
Timothy Snyder is another one.
Historians are absolutely needed in the room for all political discourse! They really help keep it all in perspective.
I recently told my SO that her needed to listen to political historians to really be informed about politics.
I've discovered Heather Cox Richardson newsletter podcasts recently. Her grasp of U.S. history is amazing and she uses that knowledge to put weave the tapestry into a grand whole.
This podcast is the greatest gift Jon could give to this country! In a world where quick punchlines dominate, it is nice to see people who are experts in their fields talking about politics in depth
Jon, THANK YOU
Love you all! Today's guests were absolutely fantastic. Please invite them back soon. We'll miss you over the next couple of weeks, but enjoy your well-deserved time off.
What is excellent about podcasts like this one is that you see people with brilliant spontaneous commentary like Jills, which Jon immediately acknowledged with an outpouring of respect and admiration of her intellect and intelligence. I love it when Jon lights up like this.
I quote Adlai Stevenson often. When a lady told him that every thinking American is voting for him, he replied, "Madam, that's not enough. We need a majority". It's just too bad he didn't know how to sell himself like breakfast cereal.
I remember him, my Dad really liked him!
Thank you for that. I hadnt heard of him (im british).
I see there are more out there.
I liked thi s one too:
"In America, anyone can become president. That's one of the risks you take"
Its like he's watching.
Jill Lepore is outstanding. I loved listening to her. She engages the listener in an intellectual yet fun way.
You SHOULD have historians on every episode. It's refreshing to be reminded that most political insanity isn't a brand new phenomenon in our history.
Between Doris Kearns Goodwin and Jill Lepore, I have been **loving** the historical mind explosions they've been bringing to this podcast.
I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or if it's a newer phenomenon with social media and the digital web, but I feel like there is so much we do today that people (especially younger folks) think are just the way it always was, or think today is different than before (ironic, considering this comment, I know), but getting that historical perspective in context is just so so powerful.
Please keep reminding us how nothing has changed and everything has changed. More historians!
I’d like to see you do a segment on how we can get rid of the electoral college. Love your guests.
Look up the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact! If your state isn't on board, talk it up and lobby for it!
I do have to take some exception to one statement. The public education system isn’t problematic due to teachers’ dedication. It’s problematic because school boards are full of Conservative politicians who insist on running schools like for-profit businesses. People who know nothing about education, make the biggest decisions regarding its implementation.
Public education is problematic for a multitude of reasons.
@@mattbrannon6826 As with many things, multiple causality is true; however, many of the causes in public schools are a result of the intervention of certain Conservative minded people who also lack any real knowledge of the aspects of Education, Learning, and Child Development.
@@adamross9337 Sounds like passing the buck to me. When I was in school, the biggest barriers to success were teachers who didn't really care about their students. If a kid was skipping school, they would't even bother to tell the parents. Some would even encourage the student to drop out.
Then there were the teachers who were simply not very good at their job. If something didn't make sense, you could ask a question but they weren't going to spend much time trying to help you understand something.
I had one good teacher in high school. He taught physical science and he was also the only teacher who took the time to call my house when I didn't show up for a week.
In my opinion, you can blame whatever you want on school board policy but at the end of the day, it's the teachers who make it or break it.
@@mattbrannon6826Sounds like you haven’t actually studied the education system. Teachers don’t choose teaching for any other reason than wanting to help kids. The benefits aren’t that great. I’m a teacher, my partner is a teacher, and we chose it to because we want to help kids. Conservative politicians not only cut education budgets to reallocate that money elsewhere, they cut the education budget because roadblocks to education make for a population easier to control with fear-mongering and red herring arguments. The GOP is relying on their base being easy to manipulate, and by intentionally damaging the education system they ensure a strong part of the population to be just that.
Isn’t that kind of the issue in every industry? America doesn’t understand that all business don’t need to make a financial profit.
Zolan and Jill so knowledgeable and informed. Best guests yet!
Thank you all for the wonderful podcast! I hitchhiked to Chicago in 1968 where I got beat up and thrown in jail (for failure to disperse)I jumped bail and continued on to California. This was a safer convention. I watched most of it on PBS. Jill, Zolan, and your team rocked. Have a good break.
Jon is just channeling his inner George Carlin. Nothing better than a good comedian raging against the government.
Jill Lepore is fascinating and so intelligent.
Robin Willams has a joke that politicians should have to wear patches on their suits so people know who they represent. The joke was featured the movie Man of The Year.
I’m sure it was also a part of his stand up too.
@@michaelbreeze9548you are correct
it was a george carlin joke
I’m viewing from Australia and watch a fair bit of US political coverage and this video is so easy to listen to. Intelligent people who know how to speak clearly and express their thoughts and opinions with such fluent language. Have subscribed and look forward to hear more.
Literally was watching the clip and then the full show posted just in time. lol. Hi Jon! I’m a young blk guy from NY and in my head your my white dad 😂 I’ve learned so much politically from you so thank you. much respect 🫡
If we are very lucky , our other dads pick us ..
Nicely said!
This convention brought joy. I feel like it’s okay to cry and don’t need to feel so numb to survive
Another really great episode! Jill Lepore was really entertaining. Thank you so much for this, Jon!
“If you’re a one-term Congress member, so what?” Ocasio-Cortez said in a video produced by Justice Democrats earlier this year. “You can make 10 years’ worth of change in one term if you’re not afraid.”
That was the old AOC, who I respected and supported. The new AOC is a careerist hack.
@dlg5485 yeah. How dare her get re-elected!
@@DarthRaptor22 She should get reelected because she fights the system on behalf of the people not because she appeases the system timidly.
We need judges more than we need clean consciences and nothing to show for them.
"That's not good, but all right !". Great line !
Great talk. More historians for context!! It's so good. Zolan was a great balance to this too.
Michelle didn't want Barack to run for president, so I don't understand why people think she would, especially after being in the White House for 8 years. With Hillary, it had been 16 years and she was Secretary of State. Big difference between Hillary and Michelle in experience and knowledge.
Right! She is on record on how much she is not into politics and would never run.
But that’s the point. She was never for the dynasty. It wasn’t a decision. It was her truth! And that makes it more powerful.
@zoemalcolm2897 but she is on the record of never liking politicians and initially did not want Barack to run. I'm sure she is also not a fan of dynastys, but to give her praise for not running when she never would is a bit silly.
…she’s like washington; offered great power but turned it down.
Thank you! Why are we giving someone credit for not running?
@JonStewert some advice: Don't worry so much about episode length. Longer shows with chapters to sort through are much easier to consume for typical viewers. Tbh, people will probably just listen to episodes as background noise, tuning in and rewatching parts of the video as it peaks their interest.
Your producers get just the best darn guests. Such a pleasure to listen to.
In Ireland students study CSPE i.e. "rights and responsibilities, global citizenship and exploring democracy" in middle school.
I loved that, great bit of political awakening and understanding.
It used to be an exam subject but that changed a few years ago.
Great job, especially Jill Lepore. Thanks John.
Jill Lepore!! One of my favorite authors, what a get!
Jill LePore! Wow! I've read most her books and everything she wrote for the New Yorker. Big fan.
Oh gawd, thank you so much for having Jill on (more please!!!!). What a breath of fresh air. I learned so much and will be going and researching more of what she introduced to me about the politics of the country. This type of conversation needs to be taught at high school as general class, not just a small group of kids in the politics club.
This podcast is fantastic, thank you for a contextual and important series of conversation.
It's illegal to gouge people during times of crisis? Someone should let the US health-"care" system know.
Republicans have been destroying anyone who tries to fix Healthcare for years.
John Stewart accurately describing the mainstream press as court stenographers.
If you did a full, unedited 90 min or whatever size show, and then cut up some 10-20 min bits for people that want particular info or can’t watch the whole deal, I’d be one who’d watch the whole thing. Thanks for doing this! Great convos!
Jon pronouncing “Lil Jon” as _”Little_ Jon” instantly aged him by 20 years, lol
Freudian slip perhaps?
Lil Jon was relevant 20 years ago so it checks out
no Friar Tuck references made...
I could listen to Jill talk about anything forever. 45:40 is my mother! She’s an amazing woman with the spirit of something terribly scary.
That rant on inflation and corporate greed: right in the feels, brutha
Great episode! Loved listening to the historian and would love to hear a discussion about the 1920s business plot and if it has any relevance to today. Thank you all for what you do!
I was in high school 15 years ago and our school had a convention process to elect our student government. I was nominated as a delegate and it helped me understand the process a lot more - definitely could see this is a positive experience in the classrooms. That being said, it has to be done well- my friend who also participated said she honestly didn’t fully understand what was going on and barely remembers it, so there still needs to be some literacy around it, rather than throwing your students in the mix without additional context.
I vote longer videos! I have a bachelors in media and communications and I found the discussion with Jill fascinating. I wish I had a professor with her insights and eloquence when I was at university and I could literally listen to her all day
We should be so lucky to have John Stewart as our nominee.
I learned so much! Y’all are great communicators! Thank you!
Thank you Jill! This is the first time I've heard someone else talk about the Dynasty element of the Bush/Clinton period.
I learn so much useful history nowadays through podcasts, than I ever did in school.
What was" wasted on the young"
Loving learning again ❤
I can't remember who said it; 'if you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeat it'.
Every high school history teacher ever? 😂
Seriously though, while this may have been popularized by Winston Churchill it seems to have been adapted from George Santayana (professor of philosophy at Harvard) who wrote “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” (The Life of Reason, 1905)
That’s not a one size fits all sort of statement though.
Some people see history as something to emulate. Fascists for example. They’re obsessed with the past. Usually, an entirely mythical one.
I much prefer the quote: “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it does often rhyme”.
Loved it. Learned some too. Get these two back for future podcasts, please. Thanks.
I was a delegate and it was ELECTRIC from the morning breakfasts to the ride back to the hotel every day. Of course, this was my first convention. Fox News said it was sleepy, maybe my eyes and ears deceived me.
Oh my gosh I REALLY appreciated Jon bringing up the question of reporting of the "news" -- I've watched news outlets more & more create news vs cover news. And sure there might be other reporters covering additional stories -- but that's not what gets the coverage and hot air. Sometimes the nonsense is what gets asked in the White House press brief! The sparky & personal opinions vs balanced factual reporting. Or grant a small group's opinion a national platform that otherwise remain in obscurity. Even if I agree with an opinion- I don't want my news to use marketing tactics to try to control & push my actions.
Creating the news used to be Yellow Journalism, a specialty of the Hearst newspaper chain.
LOL! I just made Jon's same point a couple hours ago on a WSJ vid where the narrator and comment section were all talking about Kamala's "greedflation" plan and how it's ""communism. It's hard to know how much of it is genuine stupidity - not having the slightest clue about what communism is, and how much is knowingly lying and mischaracterizing her plan to scare voters and protect corporate profits. I just loved Jon's reaction. That's a man who sees through the b.s.
Jill Lepore said about Hillary "I want the power, I deserve this, I'm entitled to the nomination."
That's a big reason she lost. I held my nose and voted for her, but a lot of people I know disliked her because they could feel her entitlement and the foregone conclusion by the Democratic Party that she would be the nominee. And they stayed home and didn't vote. Those same people now are super excited to vote Harris/Walz.
The difference between the two is the previous nomination didn't drop out, wasn't the president, and Hillary wasn't the vice president.
Hillary got more votes, anywhere else in the world getting more votes means you win but the in the US, 45 won ......
@@thorkagemob1297 All true, and just like Jill Lepore said, the Hillary nomination was "dynastic" and that turned a lot of people off.
I wasn't a fan of her when she state shopped to become a senator. They moved to New York because a seat opened up. Her first attempt at an office revealed her as a scummy self-interested politician capitalizing on her last name.
@@bobbycrosby9765 Yeah, she was inauthentic. My wife couldn't stand her and almost didn't vote but I convinced her to.
We feel the total opposite way for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. One of the reasons we love them is their authenticity.
9:58 pm so glad you brought on Jill Lepore
Great show! You had two guests who were experts in their fields and interested in the others.
Wait until Jon hears how Truman became VP...
Love your idea at the end! And the rest of the pod of course. Thanks for all you do!
Professor Lepore is absolutely right in saying public school teachers have the most important job in the country. Our citizenry cannot be good stewards of democracy if we don't learn our history. Perhaps that's why the first thing cut in any Republican state budget is education. Much love to all the good teachers out there ❤
That was very fascinating and engaging. I'm so glad I clicked on this video. Thank you
The automatic response to those who claim Harris called for price controls instead of price gauging should be "That's not what I said...I said you can't have second dinner."
We can’t stand watching anything on a news channel. We watched all four nights of the convention on the DNC TH-cam channel. No commercials, no commentary, good camera work and labeling to let you know who was speaking.
Please have this author on your podcast! She has understood why half of Americans support Trump no matter what ridiculousness he pulls and how to bring them back to reality. We ALL need to work on this. The way forward has to be less othering and more unity! “Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right” by Arlie Russell Hochschild
Jill Lepore, you are my hero. You have so much information inside your brain, and the way you deliver it is so fun and wholesome. I love collecting knowledge, and you have given me a new level to aspire to. You have earned yourself a new superfan. 😅
I know Jon Stewart said he would not run for political office, but that alone proves he does not have greed for power. He would be an excellent communicator, master debater, negotiating champion, and a charismatic force to be reckoned with. Show us your birth certificate before you announce your run for presidency. 😉
Honestly I'm not sure how well Jon would do in political office given how divided the whole institute is right now. He's shown plenty of times that he is willing to both reach out and have civil discourse with those he disagrees with (read: Bill O'Reilly) as well has hold to high accountability and refuse to accept excuses from those he supports, most obviously the Obamacare roll-out. He's probably a lot like Michelle Obama. Despite much support to get into office, they may just feel like it's not for them and their talents are better suited elsewhere.
Power corrupts ...
@AKHill-gj2uy that is just a fancy over used quote. Not everyone in history that has had power gets corrupted. Take George Washington for example, he could have been president forever but he chose to step down after two terms.
@@MexipoolAnd he did nothing in his 8 years that we would view as corrupt practice? Like say going back on every promise he had made about native americans.
@AKHill-gj2uy you have a great point. I just have a naive gut feeling that it cannot be possible for power to corrupt everyone all the time. It seems logical that some fool somewhere at some point managed to avoid falling to the dark side. 😬
The suits with the sponsors of each pol? OMG we need this 1000% 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
John, I love what you said at the end. Your suggestion of a show that outlines true Democratic debate and decision making would both be entertaining and of great benefit to our country
Great episode, this week's guests, especially Jill, were so informative.
This was so fascinating! Thanks to Jon and the guests!
She is awesome!👏
Jon, you excel at this podcasting thing! Great stuff.
"Sooooo tired... " Me too John Stewart, me too.
JUST AN FYI - MICHAEL MOORE has been talking about politicians being forced to wear corporate logos for YEARS!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Adlai Stevenson was right: the level of manipulaton possible with the visual, and its ensuing reliance on "presentation" has torpedoed 90%of the deeper discussions, even the awareness of major policies being debated, or dropped. The fact that Biden was ushered out because of a bad look at a debate "performance" still frightens me. The average American has no idea what is in the chips legislation, the infrastructure bill, the increased benefits for US vets exposed to toxic substances....etc. Biden delivered on many campaign promises, yet that one bad debate visual lead to hysteria at the DNC. The senior moment was more important than the many benefits he brought to American communities. Few people read newspapers any longer: instead they tune into pundit corporate networks. It's widespread pablum.
Lol don't worry once you grow up to voting age you should be able to quickly tell that, the medium isn't what caused any of that to happen and that it being visual has nothing to do with it, and you might even able to think for yourself rather than repeat things from your favorite personalities
@Gronmin My guess is I am at least 30 years older than you, and I have seen the power of the medium grow over the decades, especiallysince 2008. Would the visual of FDR in a wheelchair, if he was running today, for example, possibly hinder his ability to win an election? Outcomes shouldn't weigh so heavily on the visual, but they do.
The Lobby Suit is a fkn brilliant idea🔥👍🏾.
Some computer genius is gonna make an app filter which does that 😂
THREE CHEERS for EDUCATORS! FINALLY!!!
Television ownership in the United States reached 80% of households by 1958.
In 1952, television ownership in the United States was growing rapidly as the medium became increasingly popular. By the end of 1952, about 15 million households in the U.S. owned a television set.
Crazy how people talk about inflation like it is a force of nature and not companies putting up prices - be it raw material providers or manufacturers or wholesalers or transporters or retailers.
Sometimes it is required to cover costs. If all the donis cover cost and keep their dollar maring the same, their profit margin percent would fall.
Profit margin percent went up. Therefore, the price increase was corporate greed.
Yes/No.
Everything comes from raw materials. Those materials are traded on global markets setting the price.
Most companies who make atuff do not grow/mine/drill produce those raw materials, and even less play the speculative market game.
That means the companies in direct contact with the consumer are at the whims of the gods AND (certainly in this last bout of inflation) add a little extra for themselves.
This
Wonderful conversation and so informative ❤
What brings me joy is hearing Jon drop the fbomb. 💜
Finally a relevant person in an interview. Good work.
Jon's angry mic drops are what I look forward to each week
Excellent discussion. I learned a lot.
Political Conventions are a Dorito Sponsored Replay away from being no different than watching a Sporting Event on TV.
Consumer Protection needs to investigate the Shop Rite in Lyndhurst, NJ. The price for a 17 oz bottle of EV Olive Oil increased by $4.49 from 8.50 to 12.99 in one week.
Really interesting interview... Jill specifically seems like a really interesting person with her knowledge in history of political debates and conventions etc
Wonderful talk thank you
27:30 Invisible airwaves crackle with life..!
It was really cool to see Jon finally get his law degree, that's very impressive
what a great guest she is so sharp
I've been reading "These Truths" which is an amazing book - great to hear her analysis in this context
You cupcakes! Lol. I am 75 and stayed up .😂
24:56 “political skullduggery” I’m using that.
Jon, you should have been at the DNC! This was great, but I was disappointed you didn't do a Daily Show episode this week.
I love it! Can someone make a superclip of all the times Stewart has hated on Social Media over the years 😂.
Jill Lepore is such a boss
Hey jon or jill, Filipos from Minnesota. I have been pondering this for a while. I’m hoping you can share some wisdom. Many years ago I learned about prison gerrymandering and how it has resemblances to the 3/5th compromise. In many states the US censes counts the inmates in the rural prisons they currently reside in and they don’t have the right to vote. That’s problem A. Secondly, is it not unconstitutional for any state to restrict the right to vote for anyone who has completed their prison sentence? The 13th and 15th amendments of the Constitution back that position. 13th- "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." And 15th- “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” The word “servitude” is interpreted as slavery or imprisonment. I would love to hear your thoughts.
I was an aid to Harry Brown at 2 Libertarian conventions (1996 and 2000) and they were open conventions and the platform was debated and changed!
And Johnny Rotten brought his VH1 show to the 2000 convention and got his best welcome! I recognized him immediately and escorted him to the candidate!
I think you're supposed to say "Paris" like the French do so that Emily in Paris rhymes :P
I don't think I've ever heard anyone say it like that but you're god damned right
Chicago 68 rambling (before this convention) was just TV/media pumping up excitement for the TV program you don't want to miss. 96 is ignored because it was boring and would not sell tickets or get eyeballs to the screen.
I miss chicken fingers. 😢 Ever since I found out I can't eat poultry anymore due to my gastro-intestinal related disability, plant-based chicken is a low substitute. I love chicken but chicken hates me.
Jill , you rock
