As the programmer behind this game, thank you so much for your kind words. The team has indeed all moved on but this game & its memories holds a special place in my heart, a _lot_ of love was put into this game!
Original designer here: Always nice to see videos like this pop up in my recommendations. Thanks for making it! I've still got pages and pages of notes and ideas for another AFPS but unfortunately, not the millions of dollars needed to build it. Maybe one day ;)
I would also like to add that Reflex Arena was really amazing at creating your own things, like maps or demos. Even from someone with no experience with any of those, I made a couple duel maps as well as my own fragmovie with custom camera movements and whatnot, learning straight from the game. It truly was a gem and I always enjoyed playing it
It's a technical marvel, the netcode is the best on the market. Though I tend to play other arena shooters, because that's where the players are. It's a shame.
I used to play CPMA a lot with the friends on LAN , never heard of this game. the only cpma alike game i know was WARSOW. good review as always , keep it up!
I bought this game for myself and a few friends a few years ago. Unfortunately, we only played it once, and one of the few I bought it for turned out to be a douche. Every once in a while I boot it up, and find the only matches available are 1v1 duels, like you said. That's not very appealing. It does suck that the arena FPS has so many games, but each one is desperately clawing for a community and player base. Meanwhile, micro transaction riddled games get all the players and glory.
I wanted to like this game so much that i even bought it on early access. but due to low player pop for the loads of reasons discussed to death and the market for fps games in general that caters to average gamers at best? this game unfortunately was doomed to fail in the end.
It does at the very least, have Ai. But you can only play with it for so long. The same can be said for pretty much any arena shooter nowadays. The only ones that see some numbers are Halo Infinite (some may disagree), Quake Live and Champions.
@@SackoYT it’s hard for me to put halo in the same category due to the game’s speed but at the same time the maps are kinda similar depending on game modes and there’s weapon placements too. Something about Quake Champions rubs me the wrong way too
Wait, what the hell, they got a whole level editor in? The thing these games have needed since forever? It's a shame that I never heard of it. At least Warsow had it's crazy velocity-shifting mechanic. A level editor is one of those frustrating things where it's hugely beneficial for anyone who's already into the game, but it entirely fails to _draw people in_ in the first place, usually.
They did an amazing job. The only thing I didn't like about Reflex is that too many matches were played in ports of Quake3 (or CPM) maps. I'm not sure up to what point this was intended by the dev team or not, tho. I was a Warsow developer and I wouldn't even try to deny the big link between Warsow and the Quake series, but one thing I pride on is the fact that Quake maps were never played in Warsow.
That's probably because the crowd that it did pull in were most likely from Q3, and a lot of those maps remind them of those days. Rather than play a new map, they'd play one that they know from the inside out.
@@SackoYT Yes but the downside is Q3 players are very conservative. They will say they love it because it's the same, but they won't play it because it is *almost* the same.
@jal051 Which is the paradox that the arena shooter genre faces nowadays. Changing the formula ends up turning it into something else which is not what q3 fans want. Quake Champions got roasted for trying to shake things up even though it's actually a good game. Single player arena shooters, though, are doing fine. In fact, they're doing much better than any multiplayer arena shooter today, and changes are generally better received than they are in the multiplayer department. If the arena shooter genre is gonna grow, then it needs to be open to different formulas.
@@SackoYT Exactly. I was really proud when we added the bomb gametype in Warsow (it was created by the comunity and we made it oficial) because it was something Quake(s) never had and people loved it both in pub and competitive games. I always expected iDsoft to take notice and add it to QL, but they never did. A pity. For a good while pubbing in Warsow was great with CA for the speed whores and bomb for team-fight. At the end of the day, the things that pushed Warsow were always the things that made it apart.
Just because *you* couldn't find either of the two active discords, steam groups, or the recently nuked then revived subreddit, doesn't mean there's absolutely no one playing. Yes there's a whole like dozen or two of us. Yes it's abandoned by devs and community for the most part but people still play it.
I typed in Reflex Arena in the explore servers tab on Discord and found nothing. If you could provide the names of the two active discords and the steam groups that would be great.
I started playing afps a couple weeks ago. I am very interested in this game, but I do not know what makes it different from the other afps games available nowadays.
Mainly it makes design decisions based on the spirit of the Quake 3 CPMA mod, which is distinguished from normal Quake 3 Arena mainly due to the different movement and additional of air strsfing/control (like in counter strike).
Why anybody would pay when you have OpenArena and Xonotic out for free? Wanna different weapons /movement /mode ? Make a mod of the game I mentioned. The genre is not dead at all, not if the measure is "how many people would pay for you to reinvent the wheel".
if I wanted to play "xonotic" or "openarena" i'll go play CPMA or Quake Live, Reflex Arena is a solid game, a modern one at that, so idrk why you're even comparing them considering they're all dead as well
I absolutely loved this game until they upgraded the playermodels to the current ones... With that they lowered the gravity and changed the air control and weapon balance alot... and I didn't like it... Still the game is good fun and it has a beautiful artstyle.. tehace and Dev made some great maps with a beatiful simplistic artstyle... They should make it free to play but I don't think it will happen since the dev team no longer exists I think...
Never heard of this one... Played UT in past but its dead now. I play QC:DE for my afps need now. (Which isnt that much alive either 😂 but it has bots and solo/coop. And it is free)
Are you at all interested in Red Faction: Guerrilla multiplayer? It is third person arena. We play weekly. Would be most optimal if you uploaded gameplay.
As the programmer behind this game, thank you so much for your kind words. The team has indeed all moved on but this game & its memories holds a special place in my heart, a _lot_ of love was put into this game!
Thanks for popping in. Maybe the IP could be sought after by another studio, see if they can inject more life into it. But one can dream.
Please consider making the game F2P
Please make it f2p and bring it back to life. Dont let it die.
Would be cool to have the game open source like Xonotic. Would definitely increase the lifespan of the games as a passion community project.
please make it f2p I will even buy microtransactions idc
This is one if my favorite game of all times. I still play it from time to time with a friend.

Have you considered open sourcing it? Even stripped down of some code or broken? But maybe the community could drive it
Brother put game F2P so there is some playerbase and its not dead as fuck please.

And you can even edit maps in a server, technically could have a server building server, imagine the stuff a group of decent mappers could make.
excellent overview of this game and arena shooters in general. I play qlive every day practically =)
I love your videos bro, keep going :)
this game looks great...crazy how people arent playing it
i was just playing reflex and i saw you upload this 😅

The game just never really took off unfortunately, and the creators have moved on long ago.

After the whole discord fiasco you can easily read on Steam, i don't think Ill ever give this thing a chance.

at most points during the day you can check reflex's steam count and you will quite literally see 0 players on
@@wumboTKyou have to add friends to steam and discord. It's not hard if you try.
Fighting games are all literally the exact same thing, and yet are even more popular than arena shooters.

You shod try warfork
I've played it before. But not as much as the others. Will have to try it though.
