Why would you buy a Land Rover Defender? Here are the top 3 reasons: 1. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender 2. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender 3. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender
@@wilfmarshall7299 ha ha. It just makes me cringe when I read that "best 4x4xfar" Defenders are good at what they do, but could probably list a whole host of other off road vehicles that are both better off road and on.
In the uk the defender is the safest car on the road ie the lowest deaths per thousand accidents. Why ? You don't drive fast because your having so much fun driving it you don't want to arrive in a hurry. Most drivers see you coming and give way to you. You are more relaxed in a Landrover just listening to the engine and seeing over the hedges. It won't go fst and you won't get done for speeding very easily. Just buy one it will last you a lifetime. More fun than any other vehicle. Phil
I own a Def 90 and I am happy to drive it. Of course I know it is an old car project, it is not fast and comfortable as a Jaguar Xj and it's not safe to drive it like a coupe. So I don't drive it like a sport car or a luxury sedan, I just relax, enjoy the panorama and drive safely. No hurry at all. If it rains or it snows Def is still safe enough. In the '60s on our car we didn't have airbag abs traction control nor seatbelts and we are still alive. We cannot ask to a Defender to do what it cannot do.
So I can pull 3500kgs So I can load it up with shit and not have to worry about the load bed rotting out as it's aluminium So I can knock the aluminium panels about without worry about them rotting So I can use it for camping trips with it loaded up with all my gear So I can get about in bad conditions when the roads flood and the snow falls So I can maintain it with simple tools and do it myself So I can put a soft top on it in summer and hardtop in winter So I can run a PTO winch from the gearbox So I can wash the inside out with the hose when it's muddy from my work boots So I can use it for my everyday vehicle So I don't have to worry about paying hundreds for my insurance I've had mine for 16 years now and it's covered 280000 miles and in my ownership it's let me down once with a clutch problem. I'll keep it for the rest of my days and pass it on to my sons as it's part of the family. You either hate them or love them!
Pill Sharks 3500 kg is the trailer and its load. Note that this can differend from country to country as it is based on the soecs legislation. In Belgium its rated at 3500 but with a trailer fitted with dual axels and automatic breakes. There is also a downward pressure on the towhook of max 75 kg. And at last there is the drivers license limitation. I pulled 3000 kg mass once. On a flat road
D3Sshooter I've also pulled a lot more than the limited 3500kg! I used to work as a long distance lorry driver and have visited Belgium 🇧🇪 many times and always noticed the amount of Land Rovers being used. When I was in the yard back home another driver had a bet with me about pulling my lorry with the Land Rover, so I said ok but let's do it when it's fully loaded at 44000kg. The Land Rover was hooked to the front and after playing with the clutch for a few seconds the lorry was moving! I'm sure others 4x4 could also do this I'm just saying my 14 year old Land Rover did. Like I said in my previous comment you either love them or hate them
I lived 4 months in Bath in 1998 because of my job, and I saw a dark green white top Def in 1998 in the countryside, in Somerset and it was love at first sight. I came back to my country and after 21 years I bought and I own a Def just like that. Here in Italy Defender are still appreciated, even if we know they are old project cars and they are not so reliable. But everytime I drive it here people is curious about it and they look at it and ask me a lot of things. I like old cars in general because of their design, Defender is a a piece of automobile history, despite strengths and weaknesses.
I'm fortunate enough to have a Hummer H2, a Jeep Wrangler and a Land Rover Defender 90. If I had to only keep one. It would always be the Land Rover Defender.
The other day I sat in an ex United Utilities 110. It was clean and tidy, low mileage and sounded great. As I relaxed, yes relaxed into the seat. A voice came into my head and it said. 'You are a thing of beauty and a tear came to my eye!!! How mad is that! What a Vehicle, I love them. No other car has ever done that to me. None!
Absolutely loved your video! 14min 10secs summed it up for me - all Defender drivers are special people - it's very true! It's why we wave at each other! Great video - loved it - and the last few minutes made me smile so much - we go through all these problems but there is just something about it which we love!! Thank you for putting this up - great video! All the best, Damian
D3Sshooter i am kidding. They get very messed up specially if they roll. I am rebuilding one right now... and looking at it. There is no protection from side impact. There is just sill (which is normally rusty). And a 2mm sheet of aluminium, thats it.
My family had defenders when I was growing up. It rumbled, it had 3 seats in the front, it vibrated, and it had bench seats in the back. I remember going on a trip with one of my friends in a normal car, and it felt so smooth, quiet and low down, I felt like a peasant. It was so smooth that I could barely feel how fast I was going and it was horrible. When the tables were turned and my school friends went in my landy, they loved it. Everyone was so excited to be in the back of that thing.
Agreed Sir, these simple cars have so much wrong with them compared to modern machines which do every thing for you, but it's the absolute character that captures your heart, its beautiful simplicity, plus if you buy one for the right reasons, it will be the best car you will ever buy, these cars become part of the family, unlike ordinary cars you change every few years
I've got one and the reason why I bought one was because I hate car's, they either rust, or in the UK they need MOT's something we have to comply on the roads with here. Around here also you will still see plenty 30 year old Defender's still on the roads and yes they still have parts that rot away but the parts are easy to get hold of and the ability to fix them told me something, yes they have their problems especially the comedy steering every time I hit a pothole and the handbrake also too but there still around. I chose like your one a TD5 engined one becase the tune ability on them and because they have a timing chain which will last slightly longer compared to a belt, the other reason was I hope it outlast my driving licence, and I also like my tractors too especially my International 956xl, it's matches me perfectly too. Great video.👍
I do love it when people slate old landrovers , why compare it to modern cars , i for one hate modern cars rubbish electrics that go wrong expensive and have to go to dealer to fix just like the lifeless cars of today .my 1988 landrover 90 is going strong and i love it its not fast i drive it carefully unlike todays motorist in euroboxes going around round abouts at 30 mph , and most euro cars have been scrapped after 7 to 9 years life after all a landy is an light utility l vehicle
I can subscribe to that, I just love them... and I have a 2004 model besides a very old SIIA. But as you say , many compare them with new modern cars before buying and that is the wrong thing to do... It's like comparing apples and oranges.....One must love its character, style , straight forward mechanics, its simplicity and charisma and only then buy one....
Probably the most loved but there is tons of stuff out now that would outmatch defenders both on and off the roads. Pinzgauer will go up and over things that a defender just couldn't. So " best 4x4" is a bit of a bold statement but also a completely false one. Sorry.
You Sir have some awesome positivity right here. Very inspiring the way you handle all the negative comments from those with short attention span that did not make to the end of video before jumping in the comments to criticise. Nice video. Gotta love the Defender!
I grew up up in northern Patagonia in and around land rovers... later as an owner of one I experienced many of the things you mentioned, I get your point, BUT you totally missed the main reason you buy such an icon: you did not go off-road!!! And besides, I would never want to be in a far-away place in a 4x4 that depends on complicated electronics, and that you cannot repair yourself. Simplicity as this straight-forward car has is the greatest asset! I would even be interested in having a Series 1, because I know that if it already functioned for 60 years, it will still easily function for other 60... what other car can offer you this? (perhaps a citroen 2CV, renault R4, willys jeep, volvo C303... and others of this kind, which I also love)
puma thanks for your very good comments. I can follow you perfectly. Note that also have and still have a landy since 30 years and would not want to miss it.
Gents, I fully agree with you....it all depends where you live and for what purpose they are used.... so has an ordinary lint ruler advantages over a laser based ruler....and vice versa . But I would not advocate to use a lint ruler to work on houses in the city , as it has to many downside aspects and is slow. Where as I was in the middle of nowhere, then I would not use my lazer at all and fully rely in my lint ruler.... and that is the same with the defender.... its the lint ruler.... Of course , Iive in a dense populated area, with as good as NO dirt roads or nature.... so defenders are only used as utility vehicles on normal city and country roads , all paved.... in that case it comes short of many little things (that could have been improved by Land-Rover) ....and at last the prices have gone crazy , especially since so many snobs are buying them to show off....
A hilarious tongue and cheek look at Defender love! These motors are one sexy beast to drive. Mine is not as posh as yours as it has a 2.5na diesel (68bhp) and no power steering, but it makes me smile every time I take it for a drive! Well done.
Land rover defenders are built for off road and harsh environment conditions. So yea it drive like crap on the streets and gets bad gas mileage and doesn't have air bags but it's not built for comfort. It's built to get u where u need to go without having to use a helicopter.
Floppychzcake the ORIGINAL USE was as a farm tractor,,many implements were developed, end of the day,,you drove it home,,and was your ‘car’,,,,, Cheers from NJ,
I've owned my '94 reg defender 110 300tdi for 7 years, it's an ex expedition vehicle and has done over 200,000 miles, even so, the engine sounds great, in 7 years it's gone to the garage 3 times for work I wasn't able to do i.e. new rear x member, clutch replacement for hd clutch and timing belt change within a month of buying, other than that all repairs have been done in a car park or by the side of the road using only basic tools, sockets spanners hammer etc, no gadgetry no electronics to go wrong and definitely no need to link a laptop up to it either, I've owned many cars, this landy is by far the best motor I've had, I knew it was uncomfortable load economical bla bla, but I didn't buy it for that, in fact in my opinion 31MPG for a 2.9 tonne beast, that sends other drivers clambering for the grassy verge whenever I face them on the road, and you say it's not safe?, ever wondered why ncap never published its crash test results for the defender?, because they couldn't find a concrete barrier big enough, as the defender destroyed the barrier every time, one test you failed to carry out was it's off road ability, ease of maintenance, that's why we defender drivers buy them and love them,
MrCareer707 , thanks for taking the time to write. Love it. Just no sure about the crash test. But a good point .... the barrier was not strong or big enough. But after all its a champion off road. On the road is another story. But than again they were not build for road/city purpose
Thank you for the reply, it's helped me to keep my licence for as long as I have, with all the cameras in this country it's easy to acquire enough points then lose your license, not easy to exceed the speed limit, my landy is a pleasure to drive around the roads, very comfortable seating, heaters are nice and toasty for winter and the windscreen vents are just what the doctor ordered in the summer, in the 7 years I've owned the landy it's only partly disabled twice but both times it still got me home, now that is reliability, mind you I am under it more than driving it, but it has been worth every penny spent and every drop of blood spilt, and for the fuel economy? I can live with that because I save on garage labour costs, I see it like this if I look after my landy my landy will look after me,
@@MrCareer707 Wonderful what you said, I agree 1000% with you ! For the same your reasons , I just bought a restored and guaranteed Def 90, only 40000 miles and I am so happy because I don't ask to my Def confort and all the things that Def cannot do. I do not ask to run 20 miles with one liter etc. You have fully centered the subject
My dad's defender went through Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique in the last couple of months. Not just drive through but doing work under the WHO. The defender lasted where the other vehicles did not.
After serving in the British Military for 10 years, I now wish I had bought one many years ago when I left in 1995. I now live in the US and regret the decision as they are way out of my budget since they ended production. The Landrover Defender definitely served its purpose, it runs forever and is a no nonsense vehicle. I would gladly give up my Ford Explorer for one any day (if it wasn't a company lease, dont think they would appreciate it as much as I would). Just have to wait for a rich uncle to pass before being a privileged Defender owner. Driving off road is the best, and through the desert is a breeze in one of these. Towing capacity is awesome and takes a bullet like a Vietnam movie hero. Has anyone bought an ex military version? With the white rear diff and small light to illuminate it for night driving convoys. This was a pleasant memory of driving through the desert during Desert Storm leading a convoy of 22,500 liter fuel tankers to the bulk fuel installations.
Thanks. I had one once. Car was rubbish. Man, did I love it. Coolest car I ever had. 5 minutes of driving and all the sorrows are gone and you feel like being on the way doing something of importance - at least until you arrive. This car broke my heart and I am still in love.
@@D3Sshooter And you nailed it totallly from my perspective! BTW: These days I own a Lotus Elise and the same is true - although in a totally different approach, but 5 minutes of driving makes you happy as a child... Try that and you will hate it, while falling in love. ;-)))
I've had A defender since 2007 and the more advanced new cars get the more I love My Defender. The reason I bought one in the first place was no electronics easy to maintain and first of all charisma. I use it for towing and over landing and as a daily driver you can't find any car as versatile as this. It is build for a purpose and it does fortunately not drive like a modern car. I simply love it. Thanks for this review you mention all the questions any Defender owner asks them self now and then thanks quite fun. Cheers Claus from Denmark
I'm very interested to see what is in store for the new Defender. I really hope they keep it true to it's roots as a go anywhere off-roader. All they really need to do is make it lighter and safer. Address a few things like comfort and cabin space, sound deadening/ insulation and it would be a perfect machine. Especially with engine tech these days it would be far more fuel efficient, twice so with less weight from alluminium chasis. I drove these for years in the military and they're far more bare bones than the road going versions, but they were great! You wouldn't believe some of the places we took them off road, especially the 6 wheel versions.
I fully agree, and hope that it is a no nonsens car, not a ranger rover type... Yep I drove them as well in Sarajevo in 1993, great cars (mil version). Txt for commenting
Great video. The only thing tougher than a Defender is my 1977 (40 years old this year!) ex-Australian Army Series III Landy. Asking why you drive a Land Rover is like asking why you like to ride motorcycles: If you need to ask the question, you won't understand the answer! In a Land Rover, the other car is your crumple zone...
Ian Petersen txs for commenting and making your point. Happy to see that there are so many people who like defenders or its predecesors. Despite the fact that some think i hate defenders. I dont. , i just love mine
Great film!!! Very difficult to explain how lovely the defenders are, but you did it! It is something that comes from the heart. I will keep my old one forever, and take care of it always!
at the last part of the video you got to the point. The Defender is an old car living in the "modern days" you can not expect the technology all the others cars have now, this is for real driving and not pushing buttons to help you driving.
You’ve got it all wrong, the defender wasn’t built for comfort it was meant to work in all conditions all around the world and be easy and cheap to fix. It’s still one of the best off reader all rounder in the world
I only bought my first Defender 30 days ago, but reading all these comments here and of course watching the videos already make me a proud owner! 😅 Thank you very much Sir!!!
I bought a 110 LR Perentie from Australian army. Used to drive high end Audi A4 which was trouble free. I have spent as much on Perentie as I got for the Audi A4 when I sold it. I am much happier with Perentie and I can't explain why that is. It is an involved drive, go anywhere car that seats 10, can drive on beach, through rivers, over deserts, snow mountains, has a mechanical winch that can pull the car out of anything. Has a Isuzu $BD1 engine that can do 1,000,000 kms no trouble. Pretty water proof but in summer I have a convertible because I just roll up the canvas back and sides. Nothing can stop this car except your imagination. My Audi had 18 bang and olufsen speakers, was dreamy to drive on country roads and ) to 100 in some incredible time. The Perentie is better. Drive one and tell me I am wrong. Great video.
D1 owner - close enough! 😄 Absolutely enjoyed your vid. Was taking my time to rebuild brakes this past few weeks. Reduced to using the Missus' sedan.... uggghhh! Back on road this morning after 4wks, and sitting tall never felt so good! Lol Think I'll take a sunset cruise to the sound of my 300tdi. Thanks for the vid! 🖒🖒
Its the simplicity that makes it so good. It's not needlessly complicated. It's like a pair of jeans and a tee shirt. Just get in and drive it. Off road there brilliant and familiar. They will always be sought after.
Yes! Everything that you said in the video I felt very identify with my td5. People with love defender or just hated them, I just love it, right know I’m doom, because there is no other car I can change it if I need it. Great video and thanks for responding.
yes it is beautiful Land Rover Defender. I have a friend overseas own a car dealer and he said they sell between $5k - $25k for a nice one!! I think that's very good prices. Thanks for the video
Land Rover those a real good prices. Here in Europe belgium its going crazy. 20 to 50 k€. Even for a 10 year old car. Especially since they are no longer build.
A very sincere review of the car high lightening it’s many obvious drawbacks but ultimately explaining owning one is a statement of attitude . Well done ! Your level of English is excellent !
This is an unusual youtube video in that it's not all bells and whistles. D3Sshooter tells us all the pertinent info we could ever need as an owner and driver of a Defender. I'm very impressed and really enjoyed it. I took away that the Defender is a bit pants.... but it's bloody ace. I still don't know if I'm getting one, as I love my tech and comfort, but I'll soon be needing a big practical thing that can deal with the countryside. I think I'll miss my brand new Skoda Superb Sportline Estate too much though.
Trucker Jay In the UK , you are 100% right. I am not complaining, just listing why one should not buy a defender. You need to buy one for the right reasons but not if they are looking for luxury car. So i am trying to make that point. After all its a utility vehicle. And i love it. Txs. For commenting
Trucker Jay In the UK Yes indeed. But the time of rivits is long gone. Bonding aluminium and other materials is very common today. In fact since many years.
Trucker Jay In the UK fuck you it's not the toy for the highways it's a toy for off-roading and enjoyment if you want buy the the f....ck BMW or Mercedes
Actually this video helped me greatly in making my decision of whether to pursue a childhood dream, or a modern corporate man's typical lifestyle. As much as I loved Defenders since I was a child, I appreciated all the negative points he brought up because loving something is one thing, living with it daily in the city is another.
My first landrover was a 1959 series 2 troop carrier and I still wish I still had it. It was the most fun car to drive. When I want the most comfortable car to drive I chose a Range Rover but for fun in the sun it has to be a defender.
Nice video. I see you've got a winch, so I guess you take it seriously off-road sometimes. Maybe that's a good reason for a Defender :-) There's another vehicle that shares the air vent system: Citroën 2CV! My experience of the Defender is that it doesn't actually get as hot in Summer, especially when parked, as other vehicles. It's important for us as we're in S. France with a fairly big dog. I think it's mainly due to the windows being less sloping than other vehicles. You can certainly transport a lot of stuff in it even though, as you say, the rear door doesn't allow wide stuff like plasterboard sheets (l transported them on the roof - that's why so many Defenders can be seen with roofracks). Last thing: if you want to do your own maintenance, then it's usually quite straightforward. Many of the parts are not expensive because they're not sophisticated, and no electronics (my engine is a 300TDI). But you do need to keep to the maintenance schedule: I think a lot of the Defender's criticism of reliability is due to people not bothering with the grease gun, not changing the diff oil, gearbox oil or transfer box oil...
Martin Mohr thanks martin. All very good points. And yes, i use it as a utility vehicle. Not a luxury car as some want to make it. It simple is not build for that. That is why i have tried to make things clear. Dont buy it , if you expect a luxury car. I take all those little issues, as i use it fir what it is intended with all its constrains. But also with all its advantages as a utility vehicle. Thanks for commenting
You can not judge a Defender with any normal auto parameters, my 90 leaks when it rains, is cold in winter, heavy on fuel, but its 27 years old and still going strong. They just seem so wrong until you own and drive one, and then its too late you are hooked!! EXCELLENT VID Thanks
I am one of the special people😂 well done on an awesome honest review.....all the negative points to normal people are positive ones to defender owners👍 I’ve had my 110 TD5 for 15 years and it’s grown and evolved with my family, it’s our adventure vehicle....it’s taken us to the Alps, Pyrenees, Germany, Spain, Italy and all over the UK loaded up with camping gear or towing our expedition trailer it’s been awesome.....ultimately recyclable too👍
yes the lack of plastics and complex material is a VERY important point especially nowadays with all the hipsters freaking out about the planet bla bla bla and yet they buy mercedes bmws and other overly complex gizmo cars were just the electronics would take a months worth of work to properly separate all the materials to recycle...of course in reality its just draining the oils and crushing everything, then metal is separated by magnet and electrostatic device, the rest goes to the landfill as shredded bits of stuff...very sad that people dont see the reality. this environment craze is just for government sake so they dont have to buy carbon credits and so they dont have fines from the european union, they could not care less for the planet..if they did they would incentivate the brands to make easily repairable and easily recyclable cars.. for example a renault with steel body but plastic fenders.... its not pratical or viable to remove the fenders by hand, so it gets crushed and whatever is not metal is shreded and buried. they dont tell people that
I don't have a defender but I do daily drive a 2006 Shogun so I related to some of the things in this video. It's not that fast and it's enormous and much noisier than most cars but I wouldn't change it for anything because it wont break down, it can't get stuck in snow or mud and it carries 7 people, large furniture, tows anything and just makes me smile every day!
We borrowed a Defender 110 with a camper conversion for 900 miles around Australia. Ours had air conditioning, a V6 diesel, and comfort was still not a thing. It's made for the off road in the Third World, Africa, Australia and rougher parts of South America. In the developed world, it's a fashion statement.
What a hoot! I test drove a new one on a total lark back in the late 90s when I took my Golf in for service. I thought it looked incredibly cool and I still do. I did the test drive with the salesman and found the vehicle basically undriveable. It didn’t have roll down windows as your does; it had sliding slats. And yes, you are jammed up against the door. The only way to drive it is with your left elbow (outside of the U.K.) hanging out the window. Pathetic features, miserable reliability, etc. But you can’t help but know you look like a total badass driving this thing down the road.
I'm from central Africa, where we relied on Land Rovers only to cross jungles and Sahara for many years. When you go there , you would never ask for a luxury car with airbags and environmental engine that play music !.Who cares for the heated seats there ? but you would seek a car which is capable to cross Africa from North to South and return you back to Europe.Land Rover proved itself in taking you wherever you want. It's simple and reliable. Ayman Abbas (Mr)
TXS, and I can see your points. It all depends where one is living and for what purpose the are been used. In europe, a lot buy them as utility vehicules and never see off road, and today youngster try to buy them as a show-off , more show then anything else.... but besides that, its old technology but I love it
You should try a Series. I totally get where you're coming from though. No other vehicle makes me laugh when I drive it. Also, knowing nothing about mechanics, having very basic tools and a manual downloaded off the internet I can keep my forty-five year old vehicle going. the thing is so very basic, it's like Meccano.
Agree, I have had four series lll's three 88swb. Amazing fun and a 109 safari not so much fun. Brilliant, cheap to fix and reliable. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!
Great video !! You and Phil Price nailed it. I grew up in Southern Africa with Series 2 and 3 models and never had to walk because most breakdowns could be fixed on the spot with simple tools. These vehicles grow on you and if you don't get the exposure to them you go for the plastic modern short-cycle Japanese or American cars. Like red wine...
All the people complaining about your "negativity" on the defender for one are NOT real car enthusiasts and two need to watch til the end. They are just cunts who dont get that you are being brutally honest and showing what a defender is really about. You are doing the buyers (the ones who are interested in the "cool" factor alone) a service and they should be grateful for your awesome review. Thank you sir!
Andrea Downing , hello, there were 3 Landry’s in our family ,,2 green,,1 blue,,but that was BEFORE , DEFENDER,,or RANGE ROVERS, all were RHD,< 4 SPD MANUAL, 4 DOORS,,LONG WHEELBASE, , SPARE TYRE WAS ON THE BONNET,,& in the rear there was a large hole for a PTO, We mostly used irrigation pumps, & there were NO DIESELS, all petrol ,,,,, Cherrio, from NJ USA
With very little mechanical experience this weekend I freshened up my defender, new rad, intercooler, all pipework, electric fan, water pump, thermostat, timing kit, auxiliary belt and tensioner, injection pump, lift pump, crank seals, master cylinder, wheels and tyres, coolant, oil, air filter and more I’ve forgotten, cheap parts, great fun to work on, great to own and drive, the fact it’s not perfect in any way makes it perfect for me
Driving on the N60 from Oudenaarde to Gavere, i live in Nukerke and drive a black defender 110, 100% correctly description, i bought mine in november 2017 with 265000 km and i love it!!!!!!!!! (Detail I'm 1,90 m and 120 kg and still fit inside)
One of very few vehicles that you can abuse for years, leave to rot in a field for another decade then sell for more than you paid for it in the first place.
Great video - proper character - just like the Defender! The Defender will be around for many years to come. I want to buy one but couldn't live with one - but what an investment.
haha you make smile, I am like a Defender old , something from the past, lots of small things wrong.... but you know what ? You are right. TXS for the comment
A bit boring but he is right in many respects. As was stated by the editor of Land Rover Monthly, "Land Rover is fashionable because it is unfashionable; it is the statement of individuality for those who wish to rebel against the bland uniformity of today's homogenised automobiles".
I liked the review. From someone That actually drives it daily and been around the vehicle enough to give a correct and good review. Instead of some test driver that have spent 1h driving it. Drive a car is one thing living with it is another. I would still buy one, it's a No BS car basically. And it's still better than the Lada Niva.
I love my 1992 SWB 90 it's uncomfortable, noisy and about as ergonomically comfortable as a three legged blind goat, but I will never sell it! It's quirky and British! I must say that yours is very modern... heated seats and electric windows??? Luxury 😜
I have a Defender 90 TD5 1999. Ive had a Range Rover and a Defender but none compare with the stability and reassurance you get than in the Defender. When I bought it second hand its top speed was 55/60mph. According to the LR forums I put in a Van Aarken ECU chip and had Q gears from the Discovery fitted in the transfer box. Big difference with the top speed now 70mph. I've still got it 15 years later.
Thank you for an honest and true review of the car we all love and cherish. I started of with a late Series 3 109 but now we have a 110 TD5, we mostly use it on our farm for work stuff but once in a while we transform it to an overlander to enjoy the Swedish wilderness. Cheers!
A friend flipped one with his family inside, and it was only his bicycle in the back that stopped the roof crushing. Personally, I'm a great fan of not crashing, but a roll bar or a bicycle might be a good idea if you're easily distracted, or incompetent. Cheers.
Great review. Person, who never owned defender won't understand what this car is all about. I use mine TD5 110 for small trips and also as a daily car here in Warsaw. And have no idea when it became my favorite car to drive in city traffic.
It's all about the agricultural stuff with it. Not for going to supermarkets and motorways. It's for driving on fields and towing trailers. Also for animal care. It's more a English heritage iconic vehicle rather than a Rolls Royce and built extremely well
I love my Range Rover Sport. The V8 kicks out a ton of horsepower and commuting along the motorway is a joy; you just tap the gas and you’ve overtaken almost every other car. But, there’s something about this riveting (pun intended) old fashioned behemoth. I’m definitely buying one.
D3Sshooter I know. The Defender is more gritty and a genuine go-anywhere vehicle. It might lack the creature comforts and power of a Range Rover, but I’m guessing (and hoping) it’s more fun.
I have a 1957 series 1, 86" wheel base diesel Land Rover, a 1965 series 2A. 109 wheel base , diesel, Station Wagon. I drive them regularly, and wouldn't get rid of either. You learn how to become a mechanic (LOL 😀 😀) , with them. They have sole , and a character like no other. Great video of the best 4X4 ever built. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience. Remember character and sole !!!
@@D3Sshooter I just finished replacing the rear half shaft (rear axle), on the 109". This time I installed a new Dana 60 (after modified) on the rear, and front . Spare parts are becoming very difficult for these two Land Rover Series 1 and 2A. What a pain in the ass changing over.
@@D3Sshooter Definitely worked out. I went from 5 wheel stud to 8 ( new 8 stud wheels) . Much better than expected. At least once a year I had to replace the half shafts in the rear. I've also changed the whole electrical system to a Delco( GM) complete new wiring, except the Lucas intermittent (LOL 😀 😀) windshield wipers. I changed the engine to an Isuzu 3.9 diesel ( used in the Australian military Land Rover Perentie ) and dumped the 2.25 natural asperated original 3 main bearing crank shaft.. I ordered equipment from different companies in Australia.
You hit the nail directly on the head, you have to be a certain type of person to love a Land rover of any description. Since I was 19 when I bought my first 1972 Range Rover which was fitted with a Perkins 4203 (yes slower that a slug lol) I have been hooked. I have lost count of how many "series" land rovers, Discovery's, classic Range rovers and even a brand new 90 2.5TD in 1989. You love them or you hate them and you need to be able to do mechanical work or be wealthy enough to have them fixed pretty much each time you return home lol.
txs for the comments, indeed that is also my opinion ; txs for getting the message and making it clear; i had also the s2, s2A, td300,and the TD5. in fact i always had LRs . The perkins diesel, that was w real bummer, hard to start
Thanks for the honest review. I am totally agreed with him. It was my dream to buy A Land Rover Defender. After buying a defender the first thing I noticed it’s not comfortable at all for the driver and passenger. You have to roll down your window to drive this. Also the back seats for passengers are not comfortable. Very tight for the legs and foot. But there’s lots of space in the back like he mentioned. What I like the most in Land Rover wheels suspension system. And Land Rover look. That’s it. As for driver it’s not comfort at all. If you don’t believe it buy it and you will find out.
actually its just a real mans car...but if for whatever reason a woman wants to drive it and enjoys it, than thats great, and that would be wife material
4:00 I'm 6'6" and I love my Landrover 90", it's not so much needing to put your elbow on the sil but it is a nice armrest. You do need to learn how to handle the wheel differently as you can't draw down a right hand turn with your right arm as you may normally do but as I tell my friends the "comfort" my Landrover gives me is the knowledge it will get me there and get me home again no matter where I go.
Back in the 1970's whilst on a school trip, I fell out of the rear near side door of a Land Rover Defender 110. The teacher, who was sat next to me at the time, apparently, closed the door afterwards and didn't say a word about what had just happened to anyone! Eventually the driver, Mr ******** believed what the lads were shouting from the back of the land rover and dully turned around and eventually discovered me laying at the side of the road approximately half a mile or so away. I was then taken to a local veterinary clinic for a thorough medical check-up and given an anti-tetanus jab in my arse lol... many years later... I now own and drive a Land Rover Defender 90 and love it to bits - happy days! : )
Why would you buy a Land Rover Defender? Here are the top 3 reasons:
1. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender
2. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender
3. Because it’s a Land Rover Defender
2MDSPORT TUNING the best 4x4xfar

@@wilfmarshall7299 ha ha. It just makes me cringe when I read that "best 4x4xfar" Defenders are good at what they do, but could probably list a whole host of other off road vehicles that are both better off road and on.
I love all 3 reason
This is the Defender review I've most wanted to see! No sugar coated, glossed over excuses! It's why we love this car! :)
So do I ❤
And I.
exactly!
Phil
also if you do crash you'll probably still be able to drive it
The real reason is because it spends less time on the road and more time in the garage.
Absolute bag of shite
More likely it was designed for off road 50% of time by farmers etc.
I've had my 110 past 100mph they can be as fast as you want them to be 😂
I own a Def 90 and I am happy to drive it.
So I can pull 3500kgs
So I can load it up with shit and not have to worry about the load bed rotting out as it's aluminium
So I can knock the aluminium panels about without worry about them rotting
So I can use it for camping trips with it loaded up with all my gear
So I can get about in bad conditions when the roads flood and the snow falls
So I can maintain it with simple tools and do it myself
So I can put a soft top on it in summer and hardtop in winter
So I can run a PTO winch from the gearbox
So I can wash the inside out with the hose when it's muddy from my work boots
So I can use it for my everyday vehicle
So I don't have to worry about paying hundreds for my insurance
I've had mine for 16 years now and it's covered 280000 miles and in my ownership it's let me down once with a clutch problem.
Like I said in my previous comment you either love them or hate them
@@PillSharks I'm sure mines alive.
I hate it when people start their sentences with "so"! Did they ever study English at all?
I'm fortunate enough to have a Hummer H2, a Jeep Wrangler and a Land Rover Defender 90. If I had to only keep one. It would always be the Land Rover Defender.
Anthony Carin A llmyour cars are better than the shitty defender.
What made you buy two yank cars? Yank cars are utter shit
You must pay a lot on fuel.

That's interesting, but I can kinda see why.
thank you.
I love mine, why buy a defender? Until you drive one you will never know. Nice film
Yes indeed Dave, I have one and would not want to miss it ,,, That was also the point of the video

None!
Mark Millar indeed Mark. That is what lr lovers all have in common. Despite all the small little issued
2:02 The energy at collision gets absorbed by the other car :P
Not so, it will triple through the chassis and provides little protection. That is also why they were banded in the US

Staz Charlesworth txs. But not realy if you hit a pillar of concrete.

Everyone was so excited to be in the back of that thing.
hahaha, thanks for the comments
Agreed Sir, these simple cars have so much wrong with them compared to modern machines which do every thing for you, but it's the absolute character that captures your heart, its beautiful simplicity, plus if you buy one for the right reasons, it will be the best car you will ever buy, these cars become part of the family, unlike ordinary cars you change every few years
Eric Storey Txs Eric. I am pleased to see that others like you see it the same way as i. Beauty by imperfection

I agree with you ! 👍👌👏
Owned Land Rovers for more than 50 years. You have given such an accurate descriptrion of the Defender TD5. No nonsense. You are spot on. Thank you.
Thank you
If you have to ask, you'll never understand.
John Bebe , a very good point. Txs
I agree with you
I've got one and the reason why I bought one was because I hate car's, they either rust, or in the UK they need MOT's something we have to comply on the roads with here.
Calum Anderson , txs and indeed they are great to own and easy to work despite all the little things.
Sir, you are my hero. What a fantastic video. THANK YOU! Just bought my 1993 Defender 90 and I couldn't be happier.
Glad I could help and enjoy
It's like comparing apples and oranges.....One must love its character, style , straight forward mechanics, its simplicity and charisma and only then buy one....
sparge2 you stole the words form my mouth
@@D3Sshooter Exactly!👏👌👍
Love Land Rovers , the best of all the 4x4 Without a doubt .
ticos08 Txs. And yes i agree
No! Probably the worst but....the most lovable!
Indeed
Probably the most loved but there is tons of stuff out now that would outmatch defenders both on and off the roads. Pinzgauer will go up and over things that a defender just couldn't. So " best 4x4" is a bit of a bold statement but also a completely false one. Sorry.
Drive a Land cruiser Fj40 and tell me wich one is the most capable ..
You Sir have some awesome positivity right here. Very inspiring the way you handle all the negative comments from those with short attention span that did not make to the end of video before jumping in the comments to criticise. Nice video. Gotta love the Defender!

@@D3Sshooter Oh but there are, many many more like us. We ride big miles with big smiles.
Totally agree with you. Let him come to Africa where Sun and dust could break down the most luxurious car
Well done.
Chase Photos , txs. Same feeling here. Happy to that you got the message
Maybe whether you get the message from your video or not should be a test for Defender ownership?! 😄
Chase Photos that would be an idea. Haha. I guess there would not be many on the road. 😀😀😀
Land rover defenders are built for off road and harsh environment conditions. So yea it drive like crap on the streets and gets bad gas mileage and doesn't have air bags but it's not built for comfort. It's built to get u where u need to go without having to use a helicopter.
Floppychzcake the ORIGINAL USE was as a farm tractor,,many implements were developed, end of the day,,you drove it home,,and was your ‘car’,,,,, Cheers from NJ,
I agree 1000% with you
I've owned my '94 reg defender 110 300tdi for 7 years, it's an ex expedition vehicle and has done over 200,000 miles, even so, the engine sounds great, in 7 years it's gone to the garage 3 times for work I wasn't able to do i.e. new rear x member, clutch replacement for hd clutch and timing belt change within a month of buying, other than that all repairs have been done in a car park or by the side of the road using only basic tools, sockets spanners hammer etc, no gadgetry no electronics to go wrong and definitely no need to link a laptop up to it either, I've owned many cars, this landy is by far the best motor I've had, I knew it was uncomfortable load economical bla bla, but I didn't buy it for that, in fact in my opinion 31MPG for a 2.9 tonne beast, that sends other drivers clambering for the grassy verge whenever I face them on the road, and you say it's not safe?, ever wondered why ncap never published its crash test results for the defender?, because they couldn't find a concrete barrier big enough, as the defender destroyed the barrier every time, one test you failed to carry out was it's off road ability, ease of maintenance, that's why we defender drivers buy them and love them,
MrCareer707 , thanks for taking the time to write.
I can live with that because I save on garage labour costs, I see it like this if I look after my landy my landy will look after me,
@@MrCareer707
Wonderful what you said, I agree 1000% with you ! For the same your reasons , I just bought a restored and guaranteed Def 90, only 40000 miles and I am so happy because I don't ask to my Def confort and all the things that Def cannot do. I do not ask to run 20 miles with one liter etc.
You have fully centered the subject
Thanks for the video. I am happy to drive it for 40 years and not interested for modern cars except a Range Rover but the classic of course.
Right on!
My dad's defender went through Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique in the last couple of months. Not just drive through but doing work under the WHO.
The defender lasted where the other vehicles did not.
Luke Lee , yes i believe that
After serving in the British Military for 10 years, I now wish I had bought one many years ago when I left in 1995.
Indeed, that is key point I was trying to make
@@D3Sshooter

Rock Ape it’ll give you a left leg like Nadals arm💪🏼
You haven’t driven many’s cars then
Thats Nice

I am so happy, that you got the point. Yes we all love them...despite the little shortcomings and that was the whole clue in this video.

Yep Jenny, I fully agree.... I am also hooked to it...despite all the small things..
Great car for driving in city's - other cars move out of your way
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👌👍👏 great !!!!
They are afraid of Def bumpers 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👌👏
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I am one of the special people😂 well done on an awesome honest review.....all the negative points to normal people are positive ones to defender owners👍 I’ve had my 110 TD5 for 15 years and it’s grown and evolved with my family, it’s our adventure vehicle....it’s taken us to the Alps, Pyrenees, Germany, Spain, Italy and all over the UK loaded up with camping gear or towing our expedition trailer it’s been awesome.....ultimately recyclable too👍
Thank you and happy to see that we are on the same wave length, many LR owners got offended by the Video... If the only looked at the last few seconds
yes the lack of plastics and complex material is a VERY important point especially nowadays with all the hipsters freaking out about the planet bla bla bla and yet they buy mercedes bmws and other overly complex gizmo cars were just the electronics would take a months worth of work to properly separate all the materials to recycle...of course in reality its just draining the oils and crushing everything, then metal is separated by magnet and electrostatic device, the rest goes to the landfill as shredded bits of stuff...very sad that people dont see the reality. this environment craze is just for government sake so they dont have to buy carbon credits and so they dont have fines from the european union, they could not care less for the planet..if they did they would incentivate the brands to make easily repairable and easily recyclable cars.. for example a renault with steel body but plastic fenders.... its not pratical or viable to remove the fenders by hand, so it gets crushed and whatever is not metal is shreded and buried. they dont tell people that
Great video, and a very honest review, exactly what I was looking for. I'm trying to purchase one in the States, wish me luck!
Faraz Khan good luck. As they are banded after a. Ertain year
I don't have a defender but I do daily drive a 2006 Shogun so I related to some of the things in this video. It's not that fast and it's enormous and much noisier than most cars but I wouldn't change it for anything because it wont break down, it can't get stuck in snow or mud and it carries 7 people, large furniture, tows anything and just makes me smile every day!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. You summed it up beautifuly at the end. I love my `96 110 which I´ve had since new
flynn4949 txs and indeed that was the clue in this video. The end statements
"A tractor on wheels". What do tractors have if they don't have wheels?
KiwiPokerPlayer Haha. A lot of rest

But you can’t help but know you look like a total badass driving this thing down the road.
something or everything about the Defender just tickles my heart. I love it.
Defender drivers are special. I had a County for many years. I would like to buy a more recent one now 2013-2015.
Thanks for the comments,
I'm from central Africa, where we relied on Land Rovers only to cross jungles and Sahara for many years.
In europe, a lot buy them as utility vehicules and never see off road, and today youngster try to buy them as a show-off , more show then anything else.... but besides that, its old technology but I love it
Absolute brilliant review of a car that i bought 2 years ago.. And i havn't ever regretted it, well done...
Thanks for the comments
An incredible statistic I learned today....95% of Defenders are still on the road, the other 5% made it back
Indeed
I was so heartbroken at the better part of the video. Its full of plain truth but i still adore this machine
Dun Wainaina yes and so do i. They just have that effect upom us
You should try a Series. I totally get where you're coming from though. No other vehicle makes me laugh when I drive it. Also, knowing nothing about mechanics, having very basic tools and a manual downloaded off the internet I can keep my forty-five year old vehicle going. the thing is so very basic, it's like Meccano.
Dylan Claydon Txs for commenting dylan. And i can follow your views. I used to have a series IIA.
Pieter S , txs for commenting. And yes that is one of the reasons i love my defender. Simplicity. And i gladly take all the less good things with it
Love the honest intelligent review. Thanks.
Thank you sir!
none11ification , thank you. I guess most react out of passion for their landy and dont get the clue
Land Rover Defenders are freakin GORGEOUS! What a piece of machinery I say!
Thanks for the comments,
With very little mechanical experience this weekend I freshened up my defender, new rad, intercooler, all pipework, electric fan, water pump, thermostat, timing kit, auxiliary belt and tensioner, injection pump, lift pump, crank seals, master cylinder, wheels and tyres, coolant, oil, air filter and more I’ve forgotten, cheap parts, great fun to work on, great to own and drive, the fact it’s not perfect in any way makes it perfect for me
At one point I thought he was going to set the Def on fire and walk away....
😂😂😂
Driving on the N60 from Oudenaarde to Gavere, i live in Nukerke and drive a black defender 110, 100% correctly description, i bought mine in november 2017 with 265000 km and i love it!!!!!!!!! (Detail I'm 1,90 m and 120 kg and still fit inside)
David Kneuvels txs for the comments. Ik woon in heurne. Zal je misschien wel eens regenkomen. Groet
zeker en vast!!!!
Derek Little , txs for commenting
Derek Little
Exactly! 👍
Luxury 😜
Freddie d'Ambrumenil I can only acknowledge that feeling. Dispite all the small things.
🤣🤣🤣👍
I have a Defender 90 TD5 1999. Ive had a Range Rover and a Defender but none compare with the stability and reassurance you get than in the Defender. When I bought it second hand its top speed was 55/60mph. According to the LR forums I put in a Van Aarken ECU chip and had Q gears from the Discovery fitted in the transfer box. Big difference with the top speed now 70mph.
I've still got it 15 years later.
it's been around for so long because it is an excellent truck
Thank you for an honest and true review of the car we all love and cherish. I started of with a late Series 3 109 but now we have a 110 TD5, we mostly use it on our farm for work stuff but once in a while we transform it to an overlander to enjoy the Swedish wilderness. Cheers!
It's like the old saying. If it's not broke don't fix it
A friend flipped one with his family inside, and it was only his bicycle in the back that stopped the roof crushing.
Personally, I'm a great fan of not crashing, but a roll bar or a bicycle might be a good idea if you're easily distracted, or incompetent.
Cheers.
Flash Herbert thanks for the comments. And that is indeed an issue. Of course a roll bar can be added. But you wonder why its not a standard feature.
Did you know there is a land rover in almost every country in the world and most land rover's are still going strong
Ginty Millar , yep. Great isnt it.
But most are like triggers brush.lol
Great review. Person, who never owned defender won't understand what this car is all about. I use mine TD5 110 for small trips and also as a daily car here in Warsaw. And have no idea when it became my favorite car to drive in city traffic.
indeed they creep up on us, and Iove mine too despite all the liitle things
indeed they creep up on us, and Iove mine too despite all the liitle things
It's all about the agricultural stuff with it. Not for going to supermarkets and motorways. It's for driving on fields and towing trailers. Also for animal care. It's more a English heritage iconic vehicle rather than a Rolls Royce and built extremely well
Spot on Greg
I love my Range Rover Sport. The V8 kicks out a ton of horsepower and commuting along the motorway is a joy; you just tap the gas and you’ve overtaken almost every other car. But, there’s something about this riveting (pun intended) old fashioned behemoth. I’m definitely buying one.
Jamie D oh well a range rover is a class all by itself. Way different than the Defender.
D3Sshooter I know. The Defender is more gritty and a genuine go-anywhere vehicle. It might lack the creature comforts and power of a Range Rover, but I’m guessing (and hoping) it’s more fun.
Great story from a great brand! Well done
Thanks for the comments and view,
I have a 1957 series 1, 86" wheel base diesel Land Rover, a 1965 series 2A.
Henry, I fully agree with you Charisma , Character and Sole that is what makes them so special despite all the little things....
@@D3Sshooter
I just finished replacing the rear half shaft (rear axle), on the 109". This time I installed a new Dana 60 (after modified) on the rear, and front . Spare parts are becoming very difficult for these two Land Rover Series 1 and 2A.
What a pain in the ass changing over.
Henry Ratajczak , i can imagine that it becomes more difficult. Did it all work out?
@@D3Sshooter
Definitely worked out.
On of the best cars ever built
Thanks for the comments, best in its own terms
Defender is only for Special People.
Thanks for the comments,
"It's for the real man and the real woman of this world."
Thanks
actually its just a real mans car...but if for whatever reason a woman wants to drive it and enjoys it, than thats great, and that would be wife material
4:00 I'm 6'6" and I love my Landrover 90", it's not so much needing to put your elbow on the sil but it is a nice armrest. You do need to learn how to handle the wheel differently as you can't draw down a right hand turn with your right arm as you may normally do but as I tell my friends the "comfort" my Landrover gives me is the knowledge it will get me there and get me home again no matter where I go.
i love my defender! id never trade it with a different car!
annnaelee good to hear. Nor would i. I had one for over 30 years.
