Canadian heavy music artist Devin Townsend has recently announced the release of his forthcoming new album ‘EMPATH’ for the 29th March 2019.
He also revealed that in the lead up to the album’s release, Devin will walk fans through how Empath came together with a series of documentary episodes recorded as phone conversations during the course of the albums recording.
Devin previously commented:
“Hello everybody, this is Devin Townsend and I would like to formally announce that after almost a year and a half of working, I have finished Empath. Now this record has taken me down a lot of very interesting psychological and technical avenues and the process was documented from the very get-go by a series of documentary videos that I have done, that outline everything from the gestation of the idea to the actualisation of it, through all the existential ups and downs that went on. As such this record is different to any record that I have released thus far, and trying to get people on board for what it is versus what it isn’t, I think needs to be dealt with in a different way. Stay tuned for the making of Empath - the video series.”
Over the past few years, the success that Devin has slowly worked for has fortunately come with the power to control his own creative destiny. The recent successes with the DVD from a sold-out Royal Albert hall, or his 2012 ‘Retinal Circus’, or last year’s ‘Ocean Machine’ live DVD with the Orchestra and Choir of State Opera Plovdiv has put him in a position where with the new album ‘EMPATH’, he will once and for all define himself as a musical force outside of any particular genre classification.
On this album Devin has decided to see what would happen if all the styles that make up his current interests were finally represented in one place. To finally shake the fear of expectation, and just do what it is he was meant to do creatively, EMPATH, true to the name, is about allowing the audience a feeling for a variety of musical emotions. The musical dynamics represented on this single album are broad, challenging, and immense. To approach this sort of work with a long history of what makes heavy music ‘heavy’, allows this to be done with a type of power rarely heard.
Joining Devin on this album is Frank Zappa alumni Mike Keneally as music director, as well as Morgan Ågren (Mats And Morgan, Frank Zappa, Fredrik Thordendal), Anup Sastry (Monuments, Periphery), Samus Paulicelli (Decrepit Birth, Abigail Williams), Nathan Navarro, Elliot Desagnes, Steve Vai, Chad Kroeger, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Ché Aimee Dorval, Ryan Dhale and the Elektra Women’s Choir.
A bold statement with massive production values and dynamic, uncompromised musicality. This is a statement about not only pursuing creative freedom in a conservative scene, but also trying to show that heavy music is truly a valid musical tool.

I think aside from his excellent musicality, Devin's subconscious output is what resonates with us most as fans. His spiritual views, goofy humor, his journey as a human....it's all woven into the fabric of who he is, and the fact that we get to experience Empath together is truly a beautiful experience. The irony is, if some other self-absorbed rock star were to do this documentary series, I wouldn't bat an eye, or give it the time of day, but because this man has such a clear and honest artistic vision, I'm along for the ride every step of the way.

I have more anticipation for "Empath" than the new Tool album. just because I have learned to expect the unexpected from Devin. LOL
The first time I heard Devin sing it was only because I like Steve Vai. That was a long time ago, but what I heard was the same purity of expression in a vocal performance that Vai was putting forth on his guitar. I felt like I could see into some part of Townsend's mind as he screamed, whispered and cried wordless emotions into the universe. Since then it's been an on again and off again journey from SYL to DTP, and always I felt like I was being included in something special. Dev's generosity in sharing Empath's genesis and creation, and his articulation of the process, might otherwise have me looking forward to some music I like. Instead, I am anticipating the expression of an artist, a statement, a declaration, a baring of the soul. And for that I can't wait.

Love this kind of stuff! I've only listened to a couple of DTP's songs, "Fallout" and "Ih-Ah". They popped up on my Discover Weekly list a couple of years ago on Spotify and I starred them. Last week, the EMGTV performance of "Kingdom" appeared on ny TH-cam-feed and I watched it. Wow, I was floored!! So this entire weekend, I've been binge watching everything I can find, interviews, live performances and documentaries. Also I have started listening to the back catalog on Spotify, starting with "Addicted". I feel like going down into a rabbit hole =) Love to hear the new album!
Being able to let go is a massive step in your evolution. I can't wait to hear this, no matter what it sounds like or how long it takes.

You are a gift. I only learned of you and your music a year ago and I believe you are a true artist and musician, I'm obsessed.
The feelings Dev is describing kinda remind me of what Kurt went through after recording In Utero...he had so much doubt because Nevermind was the biggest success in the world, even though no one planned on it going that way. How the hell do you top that? But even with all the remixes by Scott Lit, In Utero came out spectacular, and all the "noise songs" that Kurt thought people wouldn't like, we LOVED! Milk It is so great.

Damn, I get this. The other bassist in my band and Me were talking about acknowledging the good and bad in us. Accepting that we have a propensity to do unspeakable harm to others, and yet choosing not to. The basis of morality. Having the capability to rape and murder and oppress, we are all capable.. But making your goal satisfaction without willful harm to others, to enrich others existence as much as possible without damaging yourself.
The world seems to be focussed on a few individuals indulging their own desires at the expense of others.

Empathy seems quite dead yes. I'm probably too empathic as get stepped on quite a bit, but it's the only way I can be. It's a human and compassionate quality to have and nurture. It can be very rewarding in just how I can help others or make them happy, or even save a life.
