My ms 170 looks different at the throttle linkage, the hook of the linkage is in a slot on the back side of where you were pushing down with your finger. Not sure how to turn the linkage to remove
I put my saw back on a blue paper towel after I complete the tube replacement to double check leaks no more leaks thank you so much once again. Truly saved me lots of money and I learned how to do a repair in the process
"Great Videos"!! Thank you very much. You just saved me a few hundred dollars from buying a new saw, and a couple hundred in repairs at my Stihl dealer!! I just replaced the Carburetor & Oil Line myself thanks to your easy to follow videos. I love my little MS180 and have had it about 7-years. I use it for much bigger jobs than it's rated for and is always my first grab. Last year it started cutting out and leaking oil so I used my MS290 after the Stihl dealer told me how much it would be to repair the old saw and suggested I buy a new one instead. (I need to find a new dealer I think) These videos proved invaluable to me and even though it was not quite as easy as your experience made it appear, a little playing around made it work fine. I really wish I had watched them sooner. I had a lot of trouble getting the oil line to seat. My method was to grab the line with needle nose pliers after fishing it out the oil fill hole and pulling while pushing on the grommet end. It popped right in with very little trouble. Replacing the entire Carb seemed much easier for the difference in money and it went in flawlessly. Please keep the videos coming, you are a natural and appreciated by all!!!
GREAT video. Fought on & off for 2 days trying to put pipe into the tank. Then 2 drops of dish soap on the tank seal and in it went like a champ. Soaping pipe is a must for easy assembly.
Incredible instructional video. Absolutely the best explanation. This video is very accurate, precise, and to the point. I watched several of your videos and replaced the carburetor, fuel line, and oil line on my old 018. It finally runs again and no leaking oil. Thank you !!
Don just want to thankyou from Aussie for your vids watched most of em and they are first rate for training quick fix and diagnosing. The plastic jaws or clip that the shaft clips into carrying the choke and kill switch leaver. well I snapped it off. So quick fix cause I didn't want to buy the complete casting assm. Was to drill a hole, forward of the jaws towards the cyl. and threaded a cable tie through it around the shaft and tightened up firmly Had to be careful of the fuel line, but the c/saw is blowing lots of smoke and is on its last legs due to lack of love by the owner. Repair worked a treat, So thanks for all your info and know how. I hope you have thanked the bloke that showed you how to use and look after your tools as well. Nothing like learning good hands on experience for an old timer that knows the ropes and how to impart the technical knowledge. Well done . Pete
I love this guy and this channel. I did not have the dexterity to get the grommet into the oil bar cell. Fortunately a worker at the local Stihl shop was willing to give me 6 minutes and he popped it in. I was able to do everything else thanks to this video.
TODAY: 5.21.2022 SAW: 2013 - MS180c Great step by step instructions. Helps to have a computer in the shop. Those 3 rubber vibration bushings are the funnest part. I put oil on them to assist. It is a chainsaw after all. Thank you sir. Mr. Brown, 61 North Central Florida.
That procedure for clearing the handle from the buffers is what had me skunked. Couldn't believe you have to pry the body apart that much. Thanks, Donny, for demonstrating the technique.
EXCELLENT video. Detailed and straight to the point! I wish other demos were like this. So many blabber on for the first half with stupid intros and comments. Get to the point like this video!
I've seen four of your demo's this week and they are some of the best demo's I've ever seen on youtube for any product. Detailed, no background music, every step thought out. Thanks so much from Santa Cruz, CA
Thanks with your videos I was able to sort out a problem that 2 shops and $140 hadn't sorted out. The saw had never pumped bar oil from the start and leaked oil. The pump wasn't assembled correctly, driven far enough home so the gear didn't engage with the wire and the leak was from the oil line. Thanks again
Thank you this was exactly what was wrong with my father in laws saw. He’s had his ms170 for a few years now. He wanted me to take a look at it was wanting to fix everything wrong with it. Had started leaking bar oil after a few years. This fixed the problem thank you for posting I am a subscriber I liked and saved this video
Excellent thanks, mine is a ms171 but your video showed me the basics of the pipe (how to replace) I couldn't figure how to get the handle and grip off mine but managed to do it :) without removing it. Thanks.
Thank you very much for your videos. I watched numerous others who think they know how to do what you do, but they tear things up or do it the hard way. Many thanks for a proper repair job!!!
Thank you. I have probably said it before and will say it again: You are a great teacher and your videos are perfectly done. Well explained and to the point.
Thank you so much, I saved money and did the repair. I had to take the rope shroud off, it just wouldn't go in. Gotta remember to flip the chain if you flip the bar!!
Quick tip. I rounded off a screwdriver tip to be able to install the oil line. I have big fingers and could never get the line togo flush between the case. Works great. Keep them sthil videos coming !! love it :) Thanks
Thank you Don, I followed your video step by step and fixed my oil leak problem on my ms180. So chuffed now all is fine especially winter looming, logs here we come :)
Greetings from Portugal,Europe Dony. Thanks for another great video, I thought I might have to pull the clutch to get into it , but you showed me the way. The MS170 I worked on wasn't oiling because the oil pipe WASN'T as well seated as it should have been. No replacement needed, just a bit of careful reassembly. Thanks again
These are some of the best how-to videos available. Great camera work that is always in focus and properly placed. A complete and clear explanation. Thank you very much.
Totally agree. My saw's been leaking oil for a while now, and now it'll be a simple job to know how to fix it. Going to see if I can find the part today.
Just finished mine I had to take the flywheel off for some reason I could not get the hose pushed in the oil take awsome walk through thank you for posting
Thanks a lot Dannyboy!! Crazy how things are a assembled now where you have to "Force" pieces a part by prying them... Back in the day, if you had to force anything then you are not dissembling or putting it together right. I guess those days are over lol.. Thanks again. DEv
When removing the gas and oil caps, you can insert a small screwdriver or pick through the small corner area of the plastic 'hook'/retainer. When you lift up on it, It will turn sideways and you can lift it right out of the tank without having to put stress on the rope or hook. Great video. Thanks.
I may have to do that on my Stihl saw since it is leaking oil, and the saw was not used that much since buying it new. I loved the detailed view of you tearing the saw down and putting it back together again. Thanks for sharing this information and will remember it when checking my saw.
The handle on 017 018 170 and 180 are just hell to get off and put back together... He made it look simple, cant imagine how many times hes done this xD 170 is the most purchased saw ever so im assuming hes been working a couple of years on that spesific type of chainsaw.

Don, very good, as usual. Sometime can you please make a video on some proper procedures for cleaning the saws. I see that you took the saw right into the parts cleaner and I'm just curious how you went about cleaning it as well as you did, and keeping dirt out of any places it should not go. Great job.
Absolute brilliant vid without any surplus, straight to the point and very clear in comment and views. The only thing I was wondering about is why not apply some oil if you're installing a new oil line to ease the installation? Thanks a lot, it's a great help
I agree with some of the other comments, you did a terrific job of filming and explaining this repair video. Super job, very easy to understand and very well photographed as well. Thanks!!
Dony Boy great video short and very descriptive with out having to see a long Video that has more BS then relavent information then instruction on how to get the repair done. Thanks!
The big advantage of removing the tank to install the line is you can confirm the line pick-up will be at the bottom of the oil tank. Even with the tank removed it is a chore to get the oil line to enter the lower part of the tank. It likes to curl up in the upper part of the tank. Without the pickup being in the bottom you lose about half or more of your usable oil. And having the line seal properly on the bottom of the tank is also far easier.

Thanks for being clear and direct step by step and not taking 45 min talking about the weather and what you're going to do after you fix the saw......
no bs here

Yes, soap or soapy water is essential for saving your sanity. Just don't get soap mixing with the oil itself!
