She answered that first question really well. As an author-in-progress myself, I can completely relate. A character is a piece of their author. This can be in what they look like, what they act like, what they like or dislike. But the point is that it's very hard to write a convincing character when you cannot relate to them. Know what I mean?
Amy Tan answered it well, but the question was odd and biased. Would that lady have thought to ask someone like Dickens or Hitchcock if they were ever going to build stories around non-white characters? I doubt it.
If you don't read all the time and write everyday with discipline, don't plan on getting anywhere. Even if you don't get published, because many don't, instead, give readings at the library, at meetups, on-line, so people hear you, as you will resonate with someone. Even if you get published, you'll more than likely not have many buy your book, especially nowadays. But, main thing is, you've freed your heart and spirit.
Great googly moogly, could someone turn off the questioner's mike? mmmhmm mmmhmm....mmhmm mmhmm every 5 seconds ARGH shut up so we can hear her answer!
I love the fact that she is writing from personal experience and I will still read her books.
