    The final version of the Discovery actually does have Starfleet hull livery. It's located on the outboard sides of the warp nacelles and was inspired by the design seen in TNG.

    I kind of wish the Discovery (and the Glenn) had an NX registry. It would've fit nicely with the highly experimental nature of the spore drive

    • @keirfarnum6811
      @keirfarnum6811 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      In this case, they may have avoided the experimental registry to help hide it. With a normal registry number, it would appear in paperwork to be just a normal craft, rather then a highly experimental ship.

      Well Discovery starship was one of the original designs for the Constitution class Enterprise. But it was shelved. When Gene died Ms Roddenberry. Had it in there will The there exec was to inherit Star Trek&Paramount. Which is smart. He came across 1/2 done shows like Contact. Then TV series Enterprise, Voy, DS9, Discovery. But Picard is just a continuation of TNG,VOY&DS9. Frankly, I’ve seen some of the TV series. It feels awkward. Not uncomfortable/afront to sexuality&etc.
      👇🏻👉🏻way out of left field: Star Wars is good against evil w/ good&bad space wizards evil empire army against a smaller military ragtag group. There r no death stars in Star Trek.
      Star Wars rides the coat tails of Star Trek. 👈🏻👆🏻.

    I don’t care for the design of Discovery, BUT the version of the Enterprise that showed up at the end of DIS season 2 is probably my absolute favorite design for Enterprise I’ve ever seen. It’s so sleek yet sturdy looking, and I LOVE how the pylons are super angled backward, but not too flattened down. The drive section has the nice barrel shape, the nacelles are intimidating but not stupidly over sized like in the reboot movies, ah I just love that Enterprise so much! Take that model and replace it’s saucer section with the almost cruise ship like looking saucer section if Enterprise D and you got my dream ship right there.

    • @alegsb3943
      @alegsb3943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My favorite thing about the new enterprise is that it looks EXACTLY like what I would imagine a successor to the NX01 to look like. The nacelles look just like an evolved version of the nx01, and even the swept back nacelle pylons. Once you look at the full lineage of enterprises, the og looks very out of place (of course by no fault of its own, it was the first) but now we know the nx01 came before it the new one is just superb

I started showing Discovery to someone recently and she just could not get past those "Klingons" and made me stop the first episode like 5 or 10 minutes in.

      @@GameSack I feel the same way. If I'm being honest with myself, it's a modern day Trek and that's really enough to make me watch it. If anything out of curiosity. There are some good bits in there, even if the whole thing was mostly disappointing overall. I just can't get past the fact that, in my opinion, it would have worked much better being set post Voyager. It would have taken just a few storyline tweaks, the visuals would mostly have fit. I think everyone would have been much more forgiving of it if that were the case. For some reason though CBS and Paramount seem to think that TOS era is the only thing people care about (or the only thing that will make money). Now they've even pulled the Spock card for next season! At least they seem to be coming around though with the Picard series. It could very well turn out to be garbage but at least we get to see Patrick Stewart in the role again. I don't think his presence alone can save it if it's bad though, see: what Disney did to Luke Skywalker. Here's hoping everything turns out great though!

    I'm glad you put that part in about only the surface spinning. That makes it seem less ridiculous. But I swear I've seen the hull to a loopy-loop kind of thing where the inner and outer saucer section spin on an axis that would run from front to back. Did I imagine this or does the ship really do that? God I hated that.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Game Sack It does that likely as an optical effect of the drive, just like warp drive traditionally distorts the ships appearance in several ways.
      The original warp effect was of the Enterprise slowly fading away, while the most familiar effect is the longitudinal pointed distortion seen in TNG DS9 VGR and the later films.
      It might help to consider those effects as non diegetic as they seem to change often until the start of TNG and for no more reason than the producers wanting to try something different.

      I’m pretty your referring to the “spore flip” but idk.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dreadnought AI That’s what I think. The DISCO seems to do warp drive pretty conventionally. Though if people REALLY want DSC to be era correct they should complain about that also because the Enterprise in The Cage had its very own unique warp effect!
      I just had a thought🤭 what is the spore drive is actually kept for a while! Like all the way until the end of the TOS films? We would then have a legit answer for how the TOS ships could traverse the galaxy like nothing then TNG came along with some crazy speed limits.
      I mean, according to current trek canon Kirk and friends should just now be getting back from visiting god at the center of the galaxy lol.

    • @braveintofuture
      @braveintofuture 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If just the surface is spinning but the interior isn't, that what's it good for? Should that scare klingons away?

    • @dreadnought-ai
      @dreadnought-ai 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      3Hification - presumably there's some tech relevant to the spore drive in those surfaces.
      Far more appropriate than the entire Rings spinning, as It would suggest either the entire saucer section is taken up by spore Drive Tech, or a load of unnecessary living quarters, science labs, and recreational facilities are pointlessly being taken along for the Ride.

      John Eaves worked with what was given to him: a bad sketch from the otherwise incredibly talented Ralph McQuarrie. I bet if Producer Fuller didn't force him to use this as a starting point Eaves would've delivered another great ST ship. His Enterprise-E is nearly perfect in every way and its sad to see what he had to design for Discovery.

    Gonna have a controversial opinion, I think the discovery ship looks quite cool especially seeing their design inspiration and thought process, also didn't know the thing about crossfield being named after a pilot or the walker being named after a pilot. Feels like a ship designed for war.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      krim7 I don’t get the obsession with thinking the Constitution class was supposed to be the largest ship in the fleet?
      It is never stated anywhere in canon, it is often referred to as a cruiser. And cruisers are not traditionally large ships. It’s sometimes called a “heavy” cruiser, a term that doesn’t really exist in real world navies except in response to a certain treaty.
      It is often shown to be the most advanced ship class of the fleet, but that has little to do with size. Being vastly more advanced than the Shenzou can simply mean better in every way and more compact overall.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Purdue1986Boiler I like the show and ship well enough but actually think the trailer version was better if just cleaned up for production filming.
      It looked like something that could have directly preceded the TOS Enterprise design, and The recessed section reminds me of the Oberth class. A ship I have long thought must predate the TOS era by a long time, the Grissom has a 3 digit registration number far lower than anything seen from TOS and later designs and it lacks any sort of lighting effects for the engines or other non window elements. Just like the very early Cage era Enterprise.
      If there’s still a design element that links them it would have to be the windows, the canon size of the Oberth would clash with the deck count you get going by the bumper of window rows on the model. But Discovery has a unique design where many decks have two levels of windows, if you layout the Oberth deck plan along side it’s external model you get several decks that would have two rows of windows!
      Oh, and the nacelles being attached directly to the hull is shared between them.

      Yep i don't like it either. Looks like they took a saucer and strapped a klingon D7 to the back of it. Even the spere in the saucer in front has echos of the D7.
      As a designer i think it was a bad choice to go back to concept art. There's usually a reason why it got stuck to being concept art, because it was NOT the best design. The design grew, changed and then became the final design in the constitution class. That design best matched the vision of rodenberry and what he wanted for star trek, the concept disovery is based on didn't. To me discovery does not feel like a star fleet ship at all, simply becauses of the very wide, angular back section that looks nothing like anything we ever saw before in star fleet. As i already said, the back looks more like a klingon ship then a star fleet ship. They should have made the effort to design something new. Plenty of ideas and creatives out there. But the show seems in short supply of those for anything they do as in general, i don't like the design choices they made (or the show in general for that matter). The general aesthetic of the show is nothing like star trek or star fleet for me.... The aesthetic of the show looks more like Battlestar: Discovery or Star trek: The expanse. :)

    The ultimate problem with the design of the ship is that they used an early and unused concept sketch from the design process for another ship. There is a reason why they didn’t go with that concept sketch. Because it’s bad. Designers make dozens of these kinds of sketches when finding which one fits. It’s ludicrous that everyone treats everything that the original artists did like they’re the end all be all of designs. You know, in the design process, you end up making a lot of SHIT before you make something that’s good and works. Like Chewbacca, they didn’t use the first idea they thought of. John Eves is a naughty man, He pushes his own house style over what is appropriate for the era - something Andrew Probert wouldn't do I suspect.
      He also shoves things on ships that should be there like visible RTS Thrusters : but it's not important as I don't consider Discovery in continuity with anything else (not even Enterprise really) so they can do what they like and the more the make it not Star Trek like the more it reinforces the point it's not the same universe - regardless what the Production intimates.
      But The Discovery herself is way down the list of things "wrong" with this show - the list is a lot longer than the ships looking more like an Enterprise Sequel than a TOS prequel.

    • @My-Name-Isnt-Important
      @My-Name-Isnt-Important 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, its based off of the XB-70. The CF-105 Arrow is a smaller interceptor design, while the XB-70 is a larger strategic bomber. The XB-70 has a much longer fuselage and is very different than the CF-105. The Canadian CF-105 shares much of its design elements with American aircraft of the period, such as the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger, they're both delta-wing interceptors from the 50s. The XB-70 was following a later design choice that many aircraft manufacturers of its time were testing. Perhaps you are thinking of the Avro 730, the English design that was cancelled but was to have the same role as the American XB-70?

    I go back and forth on whether I like the ship design. I like the longer nacelles and I like the general shape of the ship, I just don't like that the secondary hull is raised up on a neck but the whole back end of the ship is flat. It feels really unbalanced.

  • @ammosophobia
    @ammosophobia 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1:10 The problem is - Ralph McQuarrie's style (especially in scifi with the wide reaching audience of Star Wars) was something that defined the " used future" aesthetic we see in Star Wars and Alien, i.e. all the 80's. Star Trek was originally made in the 60's when scifi was still 'supposed' to look sleek and clean. [I think Roddenberry even stipulated minimum lines and detail on the hull! "Race car" "dragster" in space with aviation influences] When they did the re-fit in 1979 they updated while still keeping a sort-of 'smooth' aesthetic - at the least EVERYTHING FLOWED and looked good at any filming angle (apply the 1/3 frame thing or the Golden Ration to any angle of the original or refit and it will look good. Applies for the most part to TNG but not Voyager. I can't really count DS9 (since the station was symmetrical and the Defiant too compact - though it applies and makes it work perfect in battle shots). I give up on NX-01 ... too simple to delve into like the Defiant, except a pie tin in the air at any angle would work (I actually dig the NX design in secret).
    I think the refit even accentuated this aesthetic by sweeping the nacelle struts back at a V ... and moving the connection of the pylons forward on the secondary hull, which makes sense when we see the new larger shuttle/cargo bay in TMP ... and the ends of the nacelles at angles. I'd bet the angels in which the rim of the saucer, the neck, the struts, the shuttlebay, etc are even on tempo.
    Yes, space has no air so why make things aerodynamic etc. But that's the design that was laid out that defines the franchise. It's not the Millenium Falcon it's the Excelsior, it's not a Star Destroyer its the Enterprise yadda yadda.
    Referring to a concept that was radically different and never followed through with through 13 films and 4 TV series makes no sense. It's a dead end. It's even dead on the timeline because pre-Discovery ships follow the same aesthetic as Matt Jefferies, Probert, etc.
    It looks like carving fork.

    Fuller's best comment when we were working on it, "I don't want them to be able to make a toy. I want it to CUT people. That's how flat I want the saucer. Like a pizza cutter." Fuller didn't last long after that. ;) Another rarely known fact. The registry number. Yeah. It changed weeks before he got the boot. He changed it to the Halloween date at the last minute because, "I really like Halloween." Also, the spinning rings was literally last second. Like...DAYS before shipping.

The link below is only 3 months old (also a Junkball video) but it is from the original timeline and already has over 300K views. That says a lot! Discovery and the Picard show sucks, why did they have to go and screw up the recipe? Its a reason the 60s show grew into a phenomenon that gave rise to star trek TNG, DS9 and Voyager, all lasting 7 years each because the soul of star trek that was born in the 60s was still there, that is the soul of hope, not to say that there is a better future with aliens and whatnot although that is cool as hell, but rather that we as a species conquered racism, poverty, money, greed, starvation, pollution, crime, religious intolerance, disease and so many other issues. This is why star trek has lasted and why the new shows fail. If all you can do is show us a show that is a mirror image of the world we currently live in, why the hell would I waste money paying to see some BS when I can just as easily see the same BS looking out the window or turning to the nightly news, its just garbage!!!!

      I mean, that’s cool it’s growing on you. For me it both aesthetically looks bad and is illogical. I don’t like most of the TNG designs, especially the Galaxy and Intrepid, and Norway classes, but I can understand the designs in universe. Discovery to me not only looks unappealing, but thinking about it from an in universe perspective, the design is space inefficient as the cut out rings in the saucer represent a loss of internal volume, and create more surface area. The ship is more resource intensive because of this design choice. Further, it has a lot of structural week points with the tiny connecting corridors, and think of all the space that would be taken up by adding machinery to make the outer hull rotate, on top of the fact that it would need an inner hull under the rotating section to keep the thing airtight. For me these things just pile on to an unappealing design and contribute to a loss of immersion.
      I’ll grant that they could be construed as nit-picks. But for me they are part of an overall aesthetic that the show uses that I find unappealing. It’s all personal opinion, so again, I’m glad you are warming up to it. It’s not for me though.
