- Many homes on the island of Maui are in the path of a potential hurricane, tidal wave, or tropical storm. Because of this, FEMA has chosen Maui County as a Project Impact Community. Project Impact is a program that's educating homeowners on how to make their communities more disaster-resistant.

Wow very cool and i beleive this can also help a house withstand a tornado ef2 max.
My god!!! Concrete people, a complete and fully concrete house is the only material that can stop a hurricane from destroying a house.
Without a roof and secured ports (doors and windows) a concrete home can get wasted just like any other; less it's a concrete dome home with high impact rated windows, those are pretty sound buildings all around.
Concrete construction means nothing by itself. We see plenty of “concrete structures” damaged or destroyed by typhoons every year in Southeast Asia.
But in parts of the country where there are earthquakes, than it will crack.
Good info.
what kind of contractor I have to look for in texas to do what the did ?
Why didn't you use screws instead of nails? Are ringshanks a good substitute?
What kind of eagle clip is that
What is the name of that anchor system for the pllywood you are using?
They are called Threaded Rod Anchors. Sammys, Simpson, and Sioux Chief are brands that make them. The largest size that is common is the 3/8 in. x 2 1/2 in option, that is the one I would use. There is no kit that sells all the pieces together but the individual pieces are not hard to find.
Where can one purchase those lag bolts/caps?
Did you find the name for those bolts? I haven't had any luck.

Was this engineered?
How many hurricanes have hit Maui in the past 10 years
I thought “hurricane” was a term reserved for storms in the Atlantic ocean.
What a bunch of hacks! Exposed clips? Awful
This is retrofitted. What is your proposal? For my house, that would mean going into the attic, but for a house like this, it may not be possible.
This is not new construction. This is a retrofit. And uniquely in Hawaii these t and g structures have low attic accessibility. Impossible to connect from the interior, unless you gonna tear up the ceiling. I had to do the same for my house. I don’t like the look either but at least painting it helps to conceal it.
Unbelievable stupidity!
Why? Please elaborate. They should have 3/4 inch plywood admittedly, but the rest seems better than nothing.
