- Actually I just wanted to make a Malaysian Street Food Vlog in Chulia Street in Penang and have a pretty relaxed evening. And it was indeed a fun time. And this video is about food as well. The taste was super delicious. But there was one waiter who was extremely rude to me.

Apparently the girl who took order was not Malaysian but a foreign worker properly from other south east Asia country. She didn’t get what you want and misunderstood that you didn’t want to order any drinks. So she call the man, properly the boss of the coffee shop to handle when there is customers refuse to order drinks. She passed the wrong message to the man, that’s why the man seemed very unfriendly at first.

There are so many comments trying to rationalize this situation. But bad experience is bad experience. We can't attempt to deny Carlos feeling and expect every tourist to know all the unspoken rules. This is not even something that can be studied on tourist leaflet. Please be kind and acknowledge the bad experience our tourist has had. If we are being defensive, we will stop thinking how to improve our hospitability.

Carlos is creating sensation to get lots of "likes". The shop owner was kind, returning the "changes".
😂😂 I think this situations is a funny one..both are having miscommunication which involves WORD PLAY..This situation happen because the girl thoughts Carlos didn't want to order when he said 'NUTMEG DRINK' because she might understand and heard it as 'NOT MAKE DRINK'..that is why she pointed out the rules..at this point she might think U are rude by telling her to not make a drink so that is why she pass it to the man..but the man I think also understand U as the girl did which is 'NOT MAKE DRINK' thus he thought that U didn't want to follow the rules and he also might think that U are rude on keep repeating not making drink for U when U actually said 'NUTMEG DRINK' so he started to said U need to go outside if U don't want to drink..only then the man seem to understand after U point it out on the menu..that is why the man started to speak in lower tone and treat U nice and friendly in the end. Miscommunication. The rude person was actually the waitress that didn't even bother to understand you. She just walked away telling the man to 'deal' with you. This kind of bad service is very common in South East Asia.
Misunderstanding. It's a language and culture communication problem. 13:05 the black t-shirt waitress has no patience to attend to Carlos, whom a tourist who does not understand the local culture of ordering a drinks while sitting down on a table. This is something what I generally don't understand. If there's someone filming, obviously making a video for youtube, why the owners or staff don't try their best to satisfy that customer? I mean I don't expect being treated like a king and that's not the point. But it can be a pretty good move to get some more customers in the best case. Or even many more customers. There're many hateful comments here. I don't think Malaysian viewers will watch this channel. Hopefully this channel growing as you travel from a country to another country
What can I say. Vlogging in Malaysia makes rather economically sense if you have a huge audience that keeps watching your videos wherever you go. Most of the locals usually only watch content from their own country. I think people from 1st world countries don't care that much about their own country. For example I wouldn't watch an Indonesian guy traveling in Germany. But I would maybe watch him traveling in 3rd world countries if he is has a cool personality. My channel will keep growing 🚀 even though we still depend on an algorithm, but it's a smart and fair algorithm
I don't know another country but Malaysian watching travelers' contents in Malaysia. They did it for algorithm too
But not many people live in Malysia. And beside that there are many Chinese and South Asian people, not sure if they like to watch vlogs like this. It is what it is
It's not about how many people in a country. It's about how many people attach to social media in that country. You might want to see another German travel vlog such as KenAbroad

I don't think I can totally agree with you... It is not about race or ethnics group, a lot of time it gets to do with locations. The more tourist-popular and business competitive a location is, the more common such practice will be becomes. I have visited Malay/Mamak restaurants in Malaysia that has the similar rule. On the other hand, I would also say such rule is not as common in Malay/Mamak restaurants because both foods and drinks are operated by the same owners.

Most of these coffeeshops in Malaysia are owned by the drinks stall owner. The other stall rent the space from the drinks stall owner. So minimally, you need to order something from the drinks stall to be able to sit down at a table.
Stupid system
He did order drink "nutmeg" but foreign server didnt understand him & those local boss should give a proper training
coz he wanted a nootmeg drink
If the drink stall is the anchor tenant, the owner has no worries about revenue since they're receiving rent from the other stores, I can never understand the rationale behind rules such as corkage fee or compulsory order of drinks.

13:40 The food stall is not very friendly based on its gestures, it is said that Malaysians are very good at speaking English, in fact they are not, the seller should be more patient with serving customers.
He's chinese malaysian bro, he's proud of his chinese language more than any language including malay language
Those early ones whom he ordered the juice from are the ones not Malaysians...
It is first necessary to assess your own English ability in order to determine whether someone speaks good English. When your English writing is so poor with grammatical errors so obvious, you cannot possibly know that someone's English is not good.
Most shop in Penang must order drinks. food operator and drinks operator is different owner. The guy suddenly become friendly could b feel guilty as his kind of not so friendly. As a local I also feel is a bit hard. 😅 hope you still enjoy Penang 😂 the beef noodle from this shop is good 👍 .

That's on my list for my next visit to Malaysia actually 🤗
I feel the guy just didn't understand initially. And wasn't helped that you asked several people before and they didn't explain it to you. Just a misunderstanding
The food you ordered outside at the food stalls isn't a part of the restaurant establishment. When you didn't order drinks or food, from his restaurant, he's thinks you're only using his restaurant tables and chairs and his restaurant eating areas to eat the stuff you bought from outside. That's why he was annoyed. Once you became his customer by ordering drinks from his restaurant , he treats you as his customer, as how a customer should be treated.
Mh but the Banh Mi seller advised me to go inside the restaurant. And in the beginning I didn't even notice the sign that you have to order a drink. Communication is key and if there's a lack of communication or no one explains the important things, something like in the video can happen. On the other hand I don't say that I'm super innocent in general. But what the guy did is not the way how you treat people / customers / win new customers. Especially cause I tried to order a drink a couple of times with multiple persons
By the way, we have rules, regulations, more like a guidelines here in Malaysia , to do and what not to do. We're definitely not like Indonesia where you can do literally anything as you please. So, obey the laws, respect the culture, the people, and the people's way of life (I'm from KL and I too have to adjust to the way of the Penangites when I visit there) and we'll all get along fine. Cheers.
That's still rude, he is a tourist, everything should be allowed for foreigners, owner lost humanity here
@@adeyz what do you mean "you can do literally anything as you please"? in Indonesia we have rules and culture to obey too, but you don't have to be rude to say it to someone who didn't know it, especially to foreigner who used to live with different rule and culture

Hi there Carlos. Just as local Malaysian from KL like a me who had worked and stayed there. My best advice is stay clear of eating at those coffee shops insisting to ordering drinks over there. Instead you could just do a takeout and head to somewhere else. Honestly, I can tell you that there is no such thing as to force a customer/tourist to order drinks in KL or even in JB. The only sign you will see at most is no outside food, but a must to order drink is uncalled for. This coffeeshop owners are just too bloody profit oriented and they care less about the quality of service. Lastly, do visit places where locals eat and try to avoid touristy food places cause you will later notice the overprice differences.

Sorry for interjecting but you'll be absolutely fine travelling alone. I did it recently and I'm doing it again very soon, so as a female just use your common sense and intuition in situations and more importantly know your currency conversion so you don't get scammed on prices.
Travel light and act confident in any situation. Use your gut instinct and walk away if it doesn't feel right. Don't tell people you're travelling alone it's none of their business. You're meeting your husband, brother, best friend etc but also don't overthink it. You'll have a wonderful time and feel independent and liberated. I am a penangite. I think you misjudged that gentleman who you claim was rude. He was not rude but unfortunately he was scolded by you for nothing. Firstly, let me explained to you. In Penang, the coffee shop/restaurant and the hawkers that sell he food are totally different person. The hawkers(sub tenant) rent the place from the shop(main tenant) to sell their food. They don't sell drinks. Drinks you have to order from the shop. You can say they are different entity. The first and the second attempts you ordered your drink from the food seller/hawker. Since they sell only food they did not bother to take your drink order. The third attempt you ordered your drink from a young girl who don't understand what drink you want maybe from your different pronouciation of the drink. Your fourth and fifth attempt was from that unlucky waiter whom you misjudged him as rude. From what I see is he tried his very best to be nice to you but unfortunately you release your frustrations on him by raising your voice. Anyhow he still recommended you the ambla Juice which you claimed was nice. Maybe you should thank him instead of misjudging him. Another point I would like to highlight to you is that in Penang there are certain coffee shops/restaurant( main tenant )who charge a certain fee for those customers who don't ordered drinks from them. The reason is that you occupied their tables/chairs and they don't earn anything from you. They have to pay rental for their shop and if you don't ordered any drinks from them they don't earn anything from you.
Then the coffee shop/restaurant should bloody PUT A BIG SIGN and clearly stated CUSTOMER should purchase a drink if they want to sit down inside. There is no need to be rude when he was triying to explained to his customer!
‘I don’t care!’
Rude enough for tho

@baddoggi4238 Foods and drinks are usually not under the same business operators in most coffee shops setup in Malaysia. The drinks are usually sold by the coffee shop owners who supply the space and tables and chairs, also rent out the stall to different food hawkers. Being able to make a few bucks here and there from customers who eat there is part of their small business operations. Each country has its own culture and ways of doing things. While I would agree the local business owner should have acted a little "friendlier", but as tourist, it is also important for one to under the cultural differences and ways of how locals do things. Isn't that is part of traveling?
I saw one Penang woman taking her Singaporean friends to look for 'good food' in a Penang street. She took them to buy some noodles and bungkus them and took her friend all the way to a coffee shop so that they could sit down and it. The coffee shop is not a public park. The owner has to pay rent and electricity and water bills (you can use its toilet). Therefore, she and her Singaporean friends had to buy drinks from that coffee shop. The coffee shop needs to earn money to exist or else people would have to stand and it and pee where?
Penang will be better under British Administration

You were in Chinatown of Penang. That's why you are experienced this rudeness. I would avoid this part of town. Also, the food item @8:38 is called "banh mi", an iconic Vietnamese food. It's interesting that the Chinese would copy anything that's popular, then ruin the original taste!
In Indonesia, regardless of ethnicity, they have the same friendliness, bro. Sometimes the only problem is language, but I think they try to remain friendly 😊😊
With language barriers it's more fun usually 😀 even though more complicated too

Yes this is how real malaysian treat foreigners
Only chinese people do that.
Was it an uncomfortable situation for him? Probably. Could it have been a misunderstanding? Probably as well. Did the local deserve to be humiliated like this on youtube? NO. You can’t just point your camera at people and “expose” them on the internet!
I for one met this local in Penang a few months ago and he was very politr and respectful. Gave us the exact change and tried to communicate. The other lady tried to explain kindly to us that we could only use their tables if we order drinks along with our food. It wasn’t the end of the world. The drinks are cheap at 4-8 RM. he could have just ordered another one and get it over with!! Not worth shaming someone. The poster should be ashamed.
For those who curious, that cafe name is Xi Nan Cafe.
Thank you, avoid at all cost
Luckily, it was not "Nan Xi " in Cantonese! 😂
Thanks. Planning to go penang soon and will avoid this place. Also strange that some defensively advice that this is normal and expect foreigners to learn the "culture". Rudeness is not a malaysian culture. Its just an isolated bad behavior.
Lmao been there. Service was usual for me as a local. So surreal that it got bad rep
Thank you. Will patronize that place to see for myself.
This happened to me in Penang too when I visited in 2017. I only ordered food. Did not want to order a drink- but the drinks guy was pissed. I had a medical condition which meant I could only drink sterilised water- which I drank from my water bottle- which I sterilised every evening……I was super paranoid about eating and drinking in Georgetown- I had never seen so many rats in my life! The food tasted good- but the rats really put me off my food….
I am sorry to hear about your medical condition. But to be fair and honest, foods and drinks are usually not under the same business operators in most coffee shops setup in Malaysia. The drinks are usually sold by the coffee shop owners who supply the space and tables and chairs, also rent out the stall to different food hawkers. Being able to make a few bucks here and there from customers who eat there is part of their small business operations. Just sharing that so you are aware and understand the cultural differences, And if you are concerned about the hygiene of street foods or hawkers, and I would also suggest you go to more established dine-in restaurants or fast foods. There are plenty of such options in Penang/Malaysia.
sorry bout that, unfortunately most chinese kopitiam are operate like this, we local already accustomed to this kind of culture, not saying this is good, but there's nothing to be done, but most eatery like cafe or malay operate one would be much more friendly than chinese kopitiam, some hawkers street food do have hygiene problem i agree with that, i also suggest only to visit dine in restaurants since u have medical condition, do give malaysia another chance next time
Then, respect the restaurant's rule and pay RM$2.00 for using its premises. Don't you know when Angmos go to less developed country, they think their five-cent coin is as big as the wheel of a bullock cart?
@@GoodGood-vb8gm This system is stupid. Why confuse tourists with such a system? Nobody is disputing the drinks stall holder's right to get payment, but since the food stall holders are his tenants, the rent is already baked into the food prices. Besides, I shouldn't get aggravation from the drinks' stall due to a medical condition.
Rats? In which month have you been there? I was there from January to February and I saw almost zero!
Hi Brother, please don't let this ruin your food journey here. However, in the Shop Owner's defense, most restaurants all over the globe doesn't allow outside food and drinks...
This is quite common and it is not something new or exclusive to this restaurant...
If you insist on bringing in your own drinks, then it is common to follow the house rules and pay for corkage...
Please try our Chicken Satay, Lamb Satay, Nasi Lemak, Nasi Kandar and Lamb Dumpling if you get the opportunity...
seems like he gets the rules....Guy's after a nutmeg juice, but the stall guy is a bit dodgy with the English...got this selective English thing going on stuff like that..The stall guy ain't catching what he's on about and now the owner's angry thinking the guy wants to sit without ordering drinks. Tough break.
@@harris4874 Yes Brother, I understand, but having traveled so much "The Tourist" should have been able to understand and adjust to the dynamics of a fast paced normal, street side local Coffee Shop... Most coffee shops/ restaurants depend on their peak hours to make the most money and in order to do that, they have to be fast and efficient and they need all the customers to order as fast as possible. If they are out of Nutmeg Juice, the customer should quickly choose another drink option instead of wasting the owner's time by occupying the seat of another potential customer...
I'm not trying to be rude, but a little understanding from the tourist would have solved this issue...
Having said that, the lady who tried to take the order initially did seem a little too agitated and impatient which might have triggered such a reaction from the Tourist in the first place...
In this case, the lady should have been more polite and welcoming instead of being so agitated and unwelcoming... I say it's a mistake on both sides...
It's HILARIOUS to me.
You blamed your CUSTOMER because of your own poor command of English.

Tourist should come to visit Sarawak. You will feel the difference in courtesy, polite and friendly attitude where you hang around compare to penang. I agreed that most of them doing business with a rude and unfriendly way. Everything is about money. This is the only state in Malaysia that you should not consider for holidays. Rude, bad attitude and you are forced to purchase drinks or else you need to pay for entrance fee even you order food but yet serve you with the unwelcome behaviour. This will not happen to Sarawak at all. You will love Sarawak after your visiting. Food is much cheaper and people here are courtesy and you are freely to sit anywhere without paying anything and always being welcome without paying anything when entering any food parade here. No one will force you to purchase any food or drinks. No crap policies like penang. Should boycott visiting Penang food parade. Teach them a lesson when they don’t have business.
Hi friend, unfortunately I have experienced the same in food courts in Sibu, Sarawak too. Same thing, no drinks ordered, no seating. However Sarawak is a much friendlier place than Penang for sure.
Food is cheaper?? U sure??

Dear Carlos guy,
He is not being rude, you as tourist perhaps need to ask permission in the first place, right?

To anyone who thinks the server was trying to be a jerk, watch the sequence after 17:25 and see if it changes your mind. I think it was a moment of misunderstanding with no ill intent on either side.
They should add some announcement in English about the rules. And there are a lot of apps that you can use to help with languange barriers. Kicking people out due some language barriers are not good for your business especially you get visited by tourists regularly...
The sign in red on the wall did clearly state that in English: "Each table will be charged RM2.00 if no single drink is ordered. Outside drinks are not allowed in this shop". Did you see that in the video? Rule similar to such is also very common in many other countries, including those in Western part of the world.

Most hawker centers in Malaysia are using foreign workers nowadays because local peoples are less interested to take up the job.
AND, these foreign workers (especially Myanmar & Thais) often have language problems with the Customers and worst of all the DON'T CARE ATTITUDE. That's is why most Malaysians don't go to eateries with many foreign workers
