If you do the math, you’ll find that the square actually has MORE space inside it; it’s just distributed differently.
this can be used as teaching material
how would you know the square has more. it would have more if the square and the triangle had equal sides but they obviously don’t. now of course they have about the same area here because pieces fit about the same in both of them but that’s because the triangle has a larger side.
@@user-gx4uf6ej9d Because I calculated it using the pythagorean theorum and the area of a triangle being base times height divided by two.
Care to show the math on that one?
@@Neekalos well, let’s say the triangle had a side length of 4 that would make the area of the triangle 6.92820323027551. The square seems to have a side length that is about 2/3 of the triangle side length, which gives the square an area of about 7.111111111111111 which is actually more space on the inside than the triangle has.

As a high school math student, it's pretty obvious from the beginning that both shapes have similar areas
As a person who hates math, yes, its very obvious
As an observant person, It was pretty obvious from the start since every piece had atleast one corner of about 90°
I'm not that good at math and even I could see that it would fit
If length of a side of equilateral triangle = 1,
Length of a side of square (with same area as the triangle)
= sqrt [½ × 1 × (sin 60° × 1)]
≈ 0.658
So a length of a square's side is 0.658 times the length of a triangle's side, although they are the same area
So the square appears smaller

How teachers teach math:
There is a nice theorem about this. If two polygons have the same area, then you can cut one of them up into polygons which can be rearranged to make the other. This is the Wallace-Bolyai-Gerwien theorem. In fact, the example in the video is a classic example. Interestingly, it turns out that the analogous statement is not true in 3d. It is not the case that any two polyhedra with the same volume can be cut into polhedra which can be rearranged into the other. For instance, a tetrahedron cannot be cut and rearranged into a cube with the same volume. To do so, we require that the two objects have the same volume and the same Dehn invariant.
mans noticed the Dudeney dissection
That's a pretty cool observation.
and on the 2d shape, that makes sense, but it's interesting to note that it doesn't translate into 3d shapes.
I'm not that smart but you can see that in the original triangle the 4 sided figures are arranged with long angles pointing outward. It stands to reason that if you point them inwards you might have a fighting chance to fit them into the square.
I like your funny words, magic man
Smart
If length of a side of equilateral triangle = 1,
Length of a side of square (with same area as the triangle)
= sqrt [½ × 1 × (sin 60° × 1)]
≈ 0.658
So a length of a square's side is 0.658 times the length of a triangle's side, although they are the same area
So the square appears smaller
I knew there would be a trig comment ❤ man I miss maths in school
I was about to write this if I didn't see that someone already had.
Fifi you the man
So the square's side length isn't 2/3 of the triangle's side length?
As long as the volume is the same, you can put as much air into it as you want.

"You make them stand up, right?"
guess its true, everything goes into the square hole
Triagle area is (h×b)÷2
Square area is L²
That means that a triagle needs to have bigger sized sides to match the area of a square.

You reminded me of Dora the explorer by overlooking the obvious right angles of the pieces😂😂😂
Ngl they looked to be a similar size, especially when you put the triangle on top. It’s easy to visualize if you could “cut off” the outside pieces and move them to the empty space in the triangle
Yeah, this thought puzzle loses its mystery when you can see the slices in the area from the beginning
I still remember the area formulas to this day bro 😂
bro took "don't judge a book by its cover" too literally

It works because the formula for volume of a triangle is BxH/2 while a square is just BxH.
Him: "Puzzle"

"think smarter not harder" -a wise man
It's cool how, In the end, you can see the holes at the bottom of the triangle box that signify it has the same volumes as the square box.
Where does the triangle go?
That’s right! The square hole.
Bro took the little tangrams game to a whole nother level by making it an illusion 💀
"How is that even possible?"
Well, math.
This makes a good math problem
Lets say a square had a length of 6cm, a triangle with three 60 degree angles has the same amount of area as the square. What is the height of the triangle?
6 squared is 36
36 divided by 2 is 18
The height of the triangle is 18cm
That's wrong, the height is not 18cm, you can't just divide the area of a triangle by 2 to get its height
@@noskillman5275 any triangle cut in half and put together makes either a square or a rectangle
@@noskillman5275 oh wait
The area of an equilateral triangle is sqrt(3)/4 times the side length squared. So we need to solve sqrt(3)/4 s^2 = 36, then you get that s = 4 * (3)^3/4, then the height is sqrt(3)/2 times the side length. Therefore the height is 6 * 3^(1/4).
@@ethanbottomley-mason8447 thanks for the formula
amazing puzzle
you’re right it does look impossible at first glance 😅
Again, the only comments he likes are sycophantic
Squares have more volume than triangles if you are wondering why it works
The size is different, but the volume is the same, that's why the pieces can fit in each box.
Nothing is impossible to Puzzleguy 🔥
This reminds me of that math problem where there's a triangle divided into smaller shapes. When they're rearranged, you end up with an empty square.

that is completely unrelated though.
the thing it totally depends on is volume against area in 3d space, so as long they both have same volume to the area, it has to fit in it
The real "it goes In the square hole"
What would be cool is if you had to rotate the pieces on their side and stack them horizontally. You could get some really weird looking puzzles with that idea
U said it was impossible
i love that we all realize that it uses simple geometry by pairing all the 90 degree angles
My mind broke for a few seconds
With the things Vez has said, I'm shocked that the thing they are going after him for is "hating his fans".
Me who knows the concept of volume would never say it's impossible
I, who knows grammar, probably couldn’t solve the puzzle without help
Since each piece has a right angle, it is certainly possible
Bro was like: it goes in the square hole!
Wow
When you don't feel like spending money so you make it out of paper😂
The reason why the triangle look bigger is because it had less side, so to keep it balance it need extra space
The one right angle corner on each one of the pieces are a dead giveaway.😂😂
I feel like this would be really easy because every right angle on the pieces just goes in a corner of the square
Squaring the circle is impossible, but squaring the triangle is piece of cake
i think it’s pretty easy to discern how to solve the puzzle because each piece has a 90 degree angle in them
The formula for a triangles area requires division by 2, so it’s just a bit of geometry :)
"Exactly it goes in the square hole"
"this is impossible!"
anyone who finished preschool: no it isnt
why are these videos so interesting to me
"triangle box is bigger"
Middle school geometry has left the chat
An equilateral triangle with side length t has area t^2*sqrt(3)/4, or about 0.433t^2. A square with side length s has area s^2. If we set these equal, we find s = 0.658t, meaning the side length of a square can be just under two thirds (65.8%) the sode length of an equilateral triangle whilst maintaining the same area.
When I first saw it my brain went "Put all the straight corners into the corners and keep arranging till they fit."
"it goes in the square hole"
Just like how math looks super difficult but when the teacher solves that part it looks a piece of cake
Shapes: Underestimate me, by my volume, do you?
It's all about volume, not shape! Clever puzzle!
👍 An excellent and possible video art work. Thank you for sharing.
My puzzle brain was the one to figure this out quickly.
Its similar to a jigsaw puzzle (kinda),as its always evident on what pieces of a jigsaw puzzle are corner pieces, and the same can apply here.
I saw the four 90 degree angles on the inside and thought "oh those could fit in the corners, just need to figure out how theyd fit together."
Its like having a jigsaw puzzle that only requires 4 puzzle pieces
wow, these are so creative. You should totally keep making the SAME DAMN VIDEO EVERY TIME DAMN IT!
