      how would you know the square has more. it would have more if the square and the triangle had equal sides but they obviously don’t. now of course they have about the same area here because pieces fit about the same in both of them but that’s because the triangle has a larger side.

    How teachers teach math:

  • @ethanbottomley-mason8447

    There is a nice theorem about this. If two polygons have the same area, then you can cut one of them up into polygons which can be rearranged to make the other. This is the Wallace-Bolyai-Gerwien theorem. In fact, the example in the video is a classic example. Interestingly, it turns out that the analogous statement is not true in 3d. It is not the case that any two polyhedra with the same volume can be cut into polhedra which can be rearranged into the other. For instance, a tetrahedron cannot be cut and rearranged into a cube with the same volume. To do so, we require that the two objects have the same volume and the same Dehn invariant.

    This makes a good math problem
    Lets say a square had a length of 6cm, a triangle with three 60 degree angles has the same amount of area as the square. What is the height of the triangle?
    6 squared is 36
    36 divided by 2 is 18
    The height of the triangle is 18cm

    • @noskillman5275
      @noskillman5275 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's wrong, the height is not 18cm, you can't just divide the area of a triangle by 2 to get its height

      The area of an equilateral triangle is sqrt(3)/4 times the side length squared. So we need to solve sqrt(3)/4 s^2 = 36, then you get that s = 4 * (3)^3/4, then the height is sqrt(3)/2 times the side length. Therefore the height is 6 * 3^(1/4).

    An equilateral triangle with side length t has area t^2*sqrt(3)/4, or about 0.433t^2. A square with side length s has area s^2. If we set these equal, we find s = 0.658t, meaning the side length of a square can be just under two thirds (65.8%) the sode length of an equilateral triangle whilst maintaining the same area.

    My puzzle brain was the one to figure this out quickly.
    Its similar to a jigsaw puzzle (kinda),as its always evident on what pieces of a jigsaw puzzle are corner pieces, and the same can apply here.
    I saw the four 90 degree angles on the inside and thought "oh those could fit in the corners, just need to figure out how theyd fit together."
    Its like having a jigsaw puzzle that only requires 4 puzzle pieces
