The Forgotten Royal Iris Ferry Service Of Liverpool

- Opened in May, 1984, the berth was very simple, with no landing, stage and was unusable at low tide.
The berth’s greenheart mooring posts are still in situ by the Otterspool Promenade garden entrance, even though no ferry has called in for 40 years.
there is talk of reopening this for the southern grasslands and little would be needed to reopen it just a gate for passengers that's it
explored solo whilst flying my drone along the mersey
royal iris photo credit unknown at this time..
if you would like to buy me a coffee you can do here

all money does go back into the channel.....cheers

still running ferries to this up till about 1990/91 as remember getting off a few times with the family to go the britannia pub or visit the festival gardens.
Great watching from Canada again George, when I was a Liverpool dock diver you had to be really careful when cutting greenheart on lock gates and wharfs as if you got a splinter it was an automatic trip to the hospital as it contains a toxin that can cause problems if you don't remove it
hello divetech thanks for watching i never knew that about that wood being toxic learn something new everyday cheers glad you liked the video
Oooooo another nice little find , well done G 🤗
thanks betty glad you liked the video thanks for watching
We went on a school trip back in '84 to the Garden Festival and part of the day out was going on the ferry and getting off at that pier.
Fast forward to 18 years and I'm walking around the old abandoned festival site and on the floor near the go kart arena was a colour photograph that someone had taken of them standing on the ferry, looking down at the gap between the ferry and the landing stage!
It looks like it was a Polaroid instant photo, and despite being out in all weathers for 18 years or so, it was in perfect condition!
I was amazed by its condition, and by the fact it had survived being on the floor for so long and hadn't been picked up before by someone.
thats mad how it survived all those years i used to love exploring the festival gardens and that when it lay derelict and that gokart track was brill but it became a dumping ground for flytippers
im quite sad its all been restored (kindof) now lol
cheers for watching much appreciated
@@g2emedia1977 I just remembered that when I was inside the former festival site back in 2002, as I was walking along a path where all the trees line the promenade, there was a car lodged inbetween the trees! It looked like it had been driven at speed, as it was quite high up off the ground!
where you are there is a tunnel from sandon dock to garston docks . at otterspool there is a massive underground setteling tanks that connect to the tunnel . there is a drain pipe from aigburth vale into the tunnelto try to stop aigburth vale from flooding. if you walk along jerico lane then turn left i think today you can see the enterance to the works. very interesting job one of many shuttering jobs i worked on around mersyside and toda all you see is a manhole or a small door.
is thats whats known as MEPAS?
Really interesting, I was only vaguely aware of this back in the day. Such a shame about the Royal Iris slowly rotting away down on the Thames.
What an amazing Video. I did a couple of sailings to Otterspool for the Festival on the Mersey Ferry, and to think I disembarked the Ferry at this site, and to see it now is just wonderful. Thank you for making this fantastic video.
thank you very much glad you liked the video
this is ace im talking to someone who actually used this and sailed the royal iris wow
thanks for watching much appreciated
The drone photography is mega.

Always wondered what that was. Nice one George looking forward to this.
same here mate i had no idead it was an old ferry termimus
thanks for watching mate
We’ve got the boat down here in London! Old mv royal iris, I wish I could tell you there looking after her
I seen it its a right mess
Another boss vid :)
Those little plaques in the ground name things of interest along the prom. That one must be referring to the big anchor which is near the remains of the landing stage (but not that close!), others name some of the plant and birds you find along the prom. Dunno when they went in, but they're relatively recent.
ahh cool i was scratching my head wondering what they were
thanks for watching glad you enjoyed the video
i have a few more videos coming from here soon its surprising how much stuff is left from the festival days
amazing video as always george that drone intro wow i seen what you done with GTA V there top stuff matey
thank you glad you enjoyed the video ha ha yeh ive had that idea for a while now on another location it seemed rude not to try it out whilst here
thanks for watching glad you liked the vid
Interesting history George xx
thanks for watching barb glad you liked the video
As preparation for the Garden Festival the landfill was spread over the site of the Herculaneum and a mat of plastic perforated pipes laid over it and then buried. the natural process of decay led to the production of methane gas and this percolated through the pipes, was collected at points and used for lighting in the festival site.
it was a massive lanfill site indeed
Brilliant video thank you mate 👍❤️
thank you mate glad you liked it thanks for watching
I used to go on the royal iris in the 60 s
Been on her a few times myself
Been on the Iris a few times. Doing the hokey Kokey! School trips 60,s. What a shame.
That was brilliant, loved the drone shots & you getting down to the beach level - coming again in May for another look round now ... I'm missing the water 💦
Gotta wait for botox I had 3 weeks ago to fix my fingers up to wear off, in about 3 mths ... took all the strength in my hand away & it's driving me doolally 😮
thank you helen glad you liked the video
originally i went down that area to send the drome.across the mersey but i only ended up filming this but im glad you liked it
that beach leveln is deffo getting more time once the tide is out like right out ha ha
hope you fingers heal soon is that 3 months for the botox to wear off?
@@g2emedia1977 Thanks, the botox was supposed to be 1 injection in my arm, but he ended up doing 4 & one was in my thumb. Frozen first 2 fingers so I can't grip & have no strength ...
I miss all that water, be careful you don't get stuck like last time & your drone isn't lost at sea 🌊
Hi George, l remember the jetty but wondered why they never removed the jetty structure when they did the new work on promenade. I can't see them even using it again. l wanted to have a closer view just like you did but bottled out. great drone footage.
The little round plaque on the ground if you walk towards Garston staying by railings you come across about five and also on the pathways not sure what they are about great video 👍
hi martin thanks for watching mate glad you like the video
apparently they were going to reuse it but it will never be im afraid and will be left there now like the princess landing jetty
The loops on the step wall would have had rope through to help as a hand rail
yes similar to the ones i found in the woolton quarry tunnels
Princess Royal jetty get soon been taken down soon for the cruise ship landing stage going to bigger with old ilse of man ferry closed now the new one opening end march at Princess docks great video interesting
its mad how they have left it there for so long its a great mooch once under it
i think ill have to get down there and explore it one more time
thanks for watching much appreciated
BTW, have you done the walk along the shore going from the steps at the far south end of the prom, towards Garston dock?
There's some really interesting old structures along the way, and mad stuff that's been washed up on the shore.
Not as muddy as by the herculaneum, and less rubble than by oglet.
yes mate i done one a few videos back where i explored oglet with a popolation of 10 people mad place but never done the full walk like
however i have done a few videos on the prom by garston docks all documented in my video library
The Royal Iris is now berthed derelict on the Thames, unless it ha recently been scrapped, there is a video on YT with some urban explorers aboard, it’s a real shame to see it like that…
seen that what a bloody shame it will end up getting scrapped i heard it was beyond repair now
On point as always George this video is truly amazing all the time I've walked the dog along here and never knew how historic this was
Blown away by your vids bud
thank you for your kind comment
its mad.all the years ive beem down here and never knew what it was
stay tuned lots more coming...cheers
The actual royal iris boat was moored in Birkenhead Vittoria dock a few years ago, then it went to be rebuilt
i thought that was now in the thames
@@g2emedia1977 no idea now but a few years ago it was left in a poor state in Birkenhead, graffiti and looked like it was partially burnt
@@g2emedia1977 what was the royal iris's sister ship called , was it the mayflower or something ? I can't find anything on Google regards this
wasnt it the daffodil ?
Regards it having squatters on board in the Thames, it looked like that in Birkenhead Vittoria dock, someone's got crossed wires on wiki by the looks of it , I used to drive into Vittoria dock to load an artic with woodchip pellets to be burnt in the power station in seaforth
heres our lovely Royal Iris in the link below
still rotting away i see...so sad
