Bravo, I clapped and clapped. Ethel Merman was incredible. Thank you for this rare video clip. I've always thought she was a one-woman powerhouse of talent
I wonder how many people today know that the term "I get a kick" was a drug reference? In the movie "I get no kick from cocaine" was changed to "Some like that perfume from Spain/I'm sure that if I took even one sniff that would bore me terrifically too."
She doesn't always 'translate' to the small or large screen because she was built to fill the biggest stage houses in New York with her gifts and her presence. The bigger the space, the better she filled it! Suffice it to say, audiences loved her and nobody from 1930- to Dec. 27 1970 did a better job of filling seats in a stage musical and if you include her lounge and concert years, we are talking mid twenties to 1980. You could not bank on much working either front or back of the house on stage musical, but you could depend on a Merman show to pay your mortage and your kids shoes for quite awhile.
So nice to see the great Ethel Merman performing the original, uncensored version of Porter's classic .
She was cole Porter's favorite singer. She was amazing.
