  • This is an amazing and heartwarming video from 1982 tv show "Over Easy". Mary was the co-host along with Jim Hartz . Ethel Merman was the invited guest. Merman is wonderful in the interview section talking about the love she had for her folks, and Mary is always charming. At the end they do a loving and spectacular duet of "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better" changing the words to show their admiration for each other! Two show business legends together. Great friends and great stars. The duet from Irving Berlin's "Annie Get Your Gun" was meaningful to both. Ethel originated the show on Broadway and Mary headlined the national tour. They both performed the musical on television. Please enjoy.

Thanks to TH-cam I have after 60 years really gotten into what was Merman. Although when I was 10 years old my dad bought an LP of Ethel singing there’s no business like show business. I have recently become a great fan of hers and then now in this time of pandemic I can’t tell you how much she makes me smile and how much I enjoy every video here thanks to TH-cam . A great lady and I only wish I had been able to see her in person, Bless you Ethel you were one great Dame

Ethel once said about Martin, "Mary Martin? She's okay...if you like talent." Kudos to Ethel.

This clip is a dream come true. Merman tells her familiar stories but it seems like she's telling the stories for the first time. And to see her with Mary Martin is stupendous. This clip is a piece of theatre history. It's so wonderful that two of the greatest stars of Broadway's Golden Age were professional friends and that they deeply appreciated each other's talents. And at the end, to hear the two of them having such fun with ANYTHING YOU CAN DO is a splendid coda to their beautiful relationship.

I couldn't have said it better. I'm glad I'm just old enough to remember when them two were still stars. Like you said - that was television, Broadway, theatre, song and dance, and anything else you can think of history with them two together.

Yes, the two were indeed friends. She was on her way to do the Academy Awards show with Martin, and then stay with Martin in Palm Springs for a bit when she collapsed diagnosed with a glioblastoma. Lasted 10 months.

In the 1960 Tony awards for best performance by a leading actress in a musical Miss Mary Martin of The Sound of Music won over Miss Ethel Merman in Gypsy . Also nominated was a young Carol Burnett . Ironic now because Miss Merman is more renowned for her play than Miss Martin for hers . Julie Andrews and the movie have long eclipsed the Broadway play . This vid shows their friendship and mutual admiration both before and after that particular event .

You are dead wrong. "The Sound of Music" -- the Broadway musical. -- has suffered little in the intervening years. Mary Martin is forever associated with that show, as well as her other Broadway triumphs. The show lives on and the movie, as beloved as it is, is still a movie and it has not nor will it eclipse the original or its renown. I can't prove it from a just attempted Google search (not there), but I would guess TSOM is staged more than Gypsy.

Mary Martin also had the distinction of being Larry Hagman of "Dallas" fame's mother, which just happened to be the number 1 show on TV at the time of this show, so no wonder she was flying higher than Peter Pan.

At this point in her career, Mary Martin has largely stopped singing the songs of her great roles while Merman never gave up performing for a second. Merman holds back while Martin sings with the best of her remaining resources and delivered a great performance.

Good for Ethyl handling her own mail and business affairs. Smart! Look at Judy Garland, how her managers & husbands stole her money. I wish someone stepped in and helped Judy or Judy let down her pride and asked for help from her lady actor friends.
