    The Reading locomotive that was used for the American Freedom Train I have a bond with. My Grandfather, Oliver W Buswell was the most senior Steam Qualified Engineer on the B&M and was honored by Ross Roland to be Engineer from White River Junction VT to Manchester NH of this famed train back in April of 1975 (or 1976). I rode in the Cab with my grandfather the entire distance as a 9 or 10 yr old boy. He knew this road very well and advised Mr. Roland a stop was recommended in Franklin NH to take on water, but, Roland said "keep going Oliver" and when in Manchester NH the Fireman in the tinder did not get his boots wet -- it was almost completely dry and the only water left was in the boiler! I also got a big cinder in my eye that day making it a most miserable day! Thanks for sharing this nice video!

    Nice video on the history of the Reading, excursion steam locomotives. Thanks for sharing! I took a ride on one of the "Chessie Steam Specials" behind 2101 back in the summer of 1977. The round trip was from the B&O's Barr Yard at Riverdale, IL to Garrett, IN and back. The day for the excursion was picture perfect with warm, sunny weather. 2101 showed off her stuff in the Calumet region ("da region" as some of the locals say) in northwest, Indiana when the big 4-8-4 got up around 60 mph pulling around 15 vintage, passenger cars.

    It might be interesting to take a look back at the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy's Excursion Engines, there's a lot of ups and downs there.
    Edit: Also, the Cheesie Steam Special ran in 1977 and again in 1978, and the roundhouse fire occurred in March of 1979 before a third season of the special could be planned.

    I thought this was a great video, however there was a locomotive you missed. Reading 0-6-0T 1251. Built in 1915 by the Reading Company, this little switcher was retained by the railroad after dieselization and was still being used up until 1963. It was then purchased by George Hart, Owner of Rail Tours Inc and briefly ran excursions on the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad before being retired again in 1966. Today she's on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

    I can't believe the Reqding company ended the iron horse rambles, just like NS ended their steam prohram. How are the remaining Reading engines today? Are they still in good condition?

    • @1940limited
      @1940limited ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's my understanding that deteriorating track conditions as well as maintenance and repairs needed on the T1s ended Reading's Rambles. Railroads in the NE weren't doing well in the 60s ultimately leading to Conrail. I believe the Great Swamp derailment on NS lead to retirement of their steam program.

  • @JBS319
    @JBS319 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As an update on this: 2102 is set to haul four Iron Horse Rambles excursions between Reading and Jim Thorpe: home rails from Reading as far as Haucks. These will include a photo runby for passengers and take place on Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July Weekend, Labor Day Weekend and a weekend in August. Following this, the 2102 will pull two weekends of fall specials between Reading and Jim Thorpe, this time with no runby. With the new passenger equipment purchased from Iowa Pacific, trains are pushing 20 coaches, so it should be quite a show with the 2102 hauling the long train. Prior to all of this, the 2102 is supposed to be tested and broken in on Reading & Northern freight trains.

    • @1940limited
      @1940limited ปีที่แล้ว

      By now I'm sure everyone knows what a spectacular season 2102 had in the spring/summer/fall of 2022 hauling freight and excursions. The restoration is beautiful.

    Very comprehensive look at the Reading fleet. Amazing that four of this class remain today and three could be steamed, given enough money to do the restoration work. 2124 needs heavy repair these days. 2101 should be repatriated and returned to the Reading colors, rather than that ridiculous clown suit she weathers in.
    I'd like to see pictures of 2123, prior to scrapping. My guess is she wasn't in terrible shape when she was condemned.

    2102 was owned by Rails Diversified Incorporated of Stowe Ohio, after Allegheny Railroad owned it. That was in the mid 70's and repairs were made at Monongahela Railroad in Brownsville Pa.
    I know because I was part of the RDI group. After the recreated Rambles in mid 80's, RDI sold 2102 to Andy at RBM. Never heard Reading Historical Society ever owning it.

    How about "A look back at Florida east coast steam excursion stars"
    Only 4 engines operated:
    #80 became 750 and you know the rest😀
    #148 ran excursions in new Jersey, including the 1975 blue comet excursion and was restored a year ago
    #113 and #153 stayed in Florida and ran at the gold coast railroad museum near the ft. Lauderdale airport and eventually miami
    Side note: 153 pulled a train carrying president Calvin Coolidge in 1928. And in 1935 on a run between Miami and key west, 153 was one of the last trains to arrive in Miami before the 1935 hurricane devastated the florida keys
