    Something that most people just don't know is that fish don't eat in the winter. My husband used to raise Koi and he was told that their metabolism slows down to almost nothing, heart rate to about 2 beats per minute. All fish need in the winter is enough oxygenation in the water and not to completely freeze. The only reason a fish will even bite in the winter is out of curiosity, not hunger. So you could really just go with fake lures rather than real bait and save yourselves the money on that.

    Hello! I’m a new sub. Always been enamored with the thought of subsistence living in Alaska. Thank you for sharing your life! Not gonna lie, I’ve been camped out on my couch binge watching you two instead of doing any chores.😆 I’d starve and freeze up there while watching TH-cam. Thank you for your honesty and inspiration. I may never move off grid, but I can cut way back where I am and still grow. Truly, thank you.💗

    Hello, beautiful country. My dad got an auger for Christmas one year. So sad he was in his 70's when he got it. Before that we had to chip a hole in the ice. My dad used salted Minos then if he got a fish he used part of the fish tail for bate. It was fresh water fishing in Chautauqua County, on Chautauqua lake.. 💕. NonnaGrace

    • @SimpleLivingAlaska
      @SimpleLivingAlaska  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      NonnaGrace, we are thankful for the auger that ice was 18'' deep! We are going pike fishing next and are most likely going to use herring for bait :)

    I know laws are different in all states, but what's the length limit on that salmon. And that's cool you can keep 20, here in Michigan you can only keep 3 but they have to be longer than 18in

    • @SimpleLivingAlaska
      @SimpleLivingAlaska  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Schauss the fish we were catching were in a stocked lake so you can keep 20 under 16 inches, and 3 over 16 inches. We are poor fisherman 😢 but enjoyed learning and getting some action! Thanks for commenting!

Might have been the only time that he could do that and get away with it..... or he really did want a fish. Turns out a pre schooler like I was is not a good fishing buddy.
