I love Bob, but this song tells a history more sorted than it seems to understand, which is especially unfortunate in light of the "If you know your history" bridge. The Buffalo Soldiers (formally the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the US Army) weren't fighting for their freedom in the American Civil War, they were massacring Native Americans in the Indian Wars. Africans experienced a genocide, the rest of Bob's work covers the pain of the post-slavery diaspora poignantly, but this song lionizes their participation in the genocide of Native Americans.
I’m sure there were terms to war. Were Africans brought to the west under duress? Did he mention they were fighting for their own survival? Is he telling a tale of his ancestors? I will not even bother to consult with you about a genocide of the black race during the war but lest not forget who’s story that is - his-story!

More than half the world doesn't know who he is He's no legend He may have been masterful but he's no master He didn't even know his own history which is why This is one of the funniest Bob Marley songs to me because he's talking about knowing history and where you come from and yet he didn't know anything about his own history her anything that happened in Africa or anything that happened with the slaves And so when you jump over to this other song war in relation to this song it just makes Bob Marley look like a big jackass because the real war they were having was with themselves neighboring tribes taking over the weaker tribes killing their families taking them for slaves as themselves and selling the other ones to the Europeans that would come by Africans have always been their own worst enemy and they've always blamed it on other people lol
