For all you people wanting square files the absolute best one is a "vallorbe" they are a Swiss made also easiest to use and longest lasting let me find the info and I will post it shortly!
Nice job on the square filing video.. 👍 I've always found square filing to outperform round file.. I use square file for felling but go to round file for cutting firewood because I found the round filed edge tends to be more durable in dirty wood.. Great video, thanks
Well I feel a bit silly now, i allways thought chisel chains had to be done on a machine.Never cut with one before but maby I might try now.Awesome video.
Great video ! Anybody not watching your videos is really missing out on a wealth of knowledge. Looking forward to meeting you at Buckingstock .. Thanks
Hello from central Pa. Love watching your videos , I'm so glad to see that finally , someone who knows what they're doing is making videos on TH-cam.....keep the up the great work and keep the videos coming .
Don't know how many people I've had bring their saw into the shop & say , I just put a new chain on and I used it & filed it & now it doesn't cut or throw them nice chips , and I don't even have to look at it to know the dealer sold them a chisel chain & then he found filed it . ! Won't cut the same when you do that I tell them ! :-) good video Sir! Big D. Out.
Top job mate. Been square filing for years. You nailed it . The only thing I do differently is take that shelf off or to take one from buckin get the gullet
@@CSkwirl Stihl shop should have them ask for a dubble bravely file for square ground chain. There about $16 here Husqvarna should still have them valorb files
Awesome video Harvey, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge it truly is appreciated... I hope all is well for you and your family, and I wish great days for you and all the community friends here and at Buckin's channel.
Harvey as always great video! Man your knowledge is amazing. I love listening to wise ol timers like yourself! As I was told once when I was very young . You can learn a lot from your ears and listening and not your flapping your mouth. Lol 😂 love to see this community grow and the good people surrounding you Harvey! I swear I just looked at it was 388subs? Now well over 600!
As I’m watching this I was filing my square chisel chain and you mentioned the darker handled tank. Soon look down and mine has the darker handle. Guess I won’t complain about mismatch... 2004 model 372xp
May have to give that a shot. Of course, you probably make it look easy. I’ve got an old round filed chisel tooth or two laying around that I could sacrifice if it goes poorly! Thanks for the lesson
Oh my Gosh!!! Not many of us Chisel file. I Cant say if its That much faster cutting than a Properly round filed Chain. Never timed it But so much smoother. in the cut. Smoother means less fatigue on you and the saw
I picked up one of those 372 with the dark fuel tank for free just recently. Had a scored piston, but cylinder cleaned up nice when I rebuilt it. I thought it seemed like an extra good runner, now i know why!
That's my worry, I dont want to put a "step" in the gullet or rounded edge with that corner of the file. I suppose to go over it with my round file is a good idea if or when I mess it up while learning.. good idea.
I believe that the X by the serial number signifies that the crankcase has been pressure/vacuum tested by Stihl at the factory. Your videos are great by the way, best wishes from England
Yeh, but John don't leave his yard(at least in his vids), so he can't know nothing lol. I think it's wise for us(speaking to iron horse not you) not to look down on those who may not have the experience we have as everyone has something we can learn. I'm more of a blue collar guy, but I've learned plenty from the same engineers who drive me crazy with their calculations. John builds a great chain, just to be clear, and I'm not knocking your comment :).
Cool saw! They're both cool, but that Stihl's real cool... I been meaning to mess around with chisel filing for some time, thought I had to get a jig and what not, not really interested in that... and the machines are just way outta my league, especially being as I can round file the crap out of a chain... definitely gonna start experimenting with this and get it down, really appreciate the info, thanks Harvey
Thanks for the tips i really have been meaning to learn this. I have questions: What happens if you square file a semi chisel chain, total failure or works better? If the step at the bottom doesn't matter then why does everyone go on about getting the gullet (i do it anyway), shouldn't it be just as good to file a 3/8 chain with a 5/32 or 3/16 file? I've used a 3/16 it honestly didn't seem to make any difference. Got to find myself a square file now...
So you used a square file on a chain made for round file? If so I am going to give this a try. Looks easier if so. Also I only use full house that still be ok to use a square file? Maybe I misunderstood let me know. Thanks Brother!
Thanks for making this. I watched a Swiss video, and some of the guys sharpen down, from the front, opposite of your technique, up from the back. Any thoughts on which way or why? It seems the guys with the grinders are going down from the top into the chain too (just to keep the sparks out of their eyes, and the burr on the right side).
I’m not a pro logger by any means but I’ve cut under a carport with shorts testing saws 😀... I’ve also cut and split my fair share of cordage thru the years and dropped a few trees here and there ... Imho machine ground or hand filed sqr/sqr is the smoothest and quickest ... sqr/rnd is also good if kept sharp ... I run full house RS sqr/rnd on 59cc and up and Ps63 sqr/rnd on 50cc and under - seems to work well on my end ... ported Saw and sharp chain works wonders for production 🐎🐎🐎
the fire wood i cut is real hard and dry, here in Australia i cut down dead trees on farm land im wondering is square filing good for this application.
I like that bar. They came on whatever saw the dealer put them on even an ms390. I wanted to buy a very nice 440 with one(timbersports 20") as well as a 24, but I missed it :(.
Hi recently found this channel and lovin it. Just wondering if somebody could confirm the type of file used ? It looks like a flat file but with the edge also filing. I work in engineering and when people say square file I tend to think of the whole profile being square. I`m Uk based and agree that Vallorbe files are good quality. Thanks for reading
Greetings from the Missouri Ozarks been logging 40 years started with a blue xl12. Many years ago '89 I bought a new 262xp ran like a skeered cat wore it out went to the dealer got a new one not even close, the difference it was like one was a motocross the other enduro The old one with 50lbs compression would run circles around it Did Husky perhaps port some factory saws or detune the newer ones? Also what would it cost me to have a jug worked over by you?
I’m pretty dang certain the second saw you got was a 261. One full horsepower less than the 262xp. Damn near identical except for a dish top piston to reduce compression.
My dad picked up a super xl12 for $20.00. I began my saw experience with that machine. Don’t forget to push that Oiler button....🤣. Jesus I appreciate vibration insulation because of that machine.
Fast and smooth, the square is. Brand new stihl round full complement is close to it in cutting speed. But those stihl chains are damn near square off the roll. Meaning it’s hard to duplicate the factory round grind.
