Roadtripping Europe (5/6): Overcoming Car Trouble and Hiking in Italy with @The Endless Adventure

  • Forget Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee), the place of pilgrimage for Instagrammers and TH-camrs! For their penultimate stop on their Europe trip, ‪@Theendlessadventure‬ discovered a lake in South Tyrol, Italy, that's equally beautiful, to say the least. The route wasn't always easy, and having to re-charge an electric campervan can be pretty complicated.
    Check out Episode 5 of Eric and Allison's road trip, where they travel through Italy's northwest!

    Even though the EV infrastructure is much better in EU, it still seems like gas vehicle is better for long road trips at this moment. The frustration, stress and anxiety associated with range and chargers really ruins the mood on a vacation.

    We rented a hybrid suv in Germany and couldn’t get any charging stations - apps to work at any stations either. Only time it worked was at a little hotel we stayed at that had a free plug in. On the plus side I still think we got amazing fuel economy and we didn’t pay extra for the hybrid upgrade

    Plug-in Hybrids may be OK for commuting to work in some cities, but they are not practical for cross country travel. Especially if you need to stay on a schedule.
    Renewable energy in general is decades away from being practical.

    So you were unfortunate with the EV, but I haven't experienced these issues since more than a year. In general the charging infrastructure has increased a lot within the last year and still is. I could charge on 80% of the stations with 1 card I have (EnBW).
    Also longer trips have not been so difficult for me. But true, best to choose a site with several chargers, so you are more likely to get an available and working one, eventhough you can check that with the charging app.
    In my opinion EVs are better except for a few cases of your daily drive is more than 200 km. Also it is much more fun and less stressing.

    We do not take our electric car on long road trips. Tried it once taking a long road trip and had to charge in a RV park in no where Oregon!

    Now imagine hundreds of thousands or millions of electrical vehicles, searching, trying, stopping, frustrated and anxious for a EV charger. The stops, the huge lines waiting to charge for endless hours or days, the price of electricity skyrocketing. This technology is not ready for the distances and the masses.

      The electrical power plant system does not have the capacity to provide power to change one or two cars at every home. More coal burning plants must be constructed if we are to go to electric vehicles.

      VW bought 2 diesels back from us over dieselgate scandal. Bought used ev's and will never go back to ICE. Wake-up to 300 miles of range every morning. $3 to fill the 'tank'. 2 cents per mile to drive. ....

      @@BobQuigley yep I've never had an issue with my Prius PRIME Plug-in hybrid. Love this car. Can be all electric when I want it to be, but can have range on the cheap if I need it. I love EV's and my next one will be a pure EV.

    Cute couple given ev with no experience yet somehow make it happen while raising awareness of issues is a winner! The notion that this would be easy peasy ignores our own history. In my youth during the late sixties and seventies gas stations were few and far between often closing by 9pm ( worked in one for 2yrs). Always had can of drygas in trunk and sometimes a gallon of gas. Gasoline was often sour and wet. Interestingly just today saw a story about our local station. Diesel was mistakenly put in gasoline storage tank and ruined several engines.

    Driving an EV ist the last adventure. I've been driving an electric car for 4 years now, and experienced all the things you went through. But the infrustructure is continiously getting better, still there is lots of improvement nessesary. Dispite of the difficulties, I will never get back to a gas powered car, because it's just too much fun to drive. And you don't pollute the environment where you drive, which is nice.

  • @AngelaBrinker

    The lesson here seems to be it's going to take a few more years before electric powered roadtrips are really practical (unless you have a Tesla and you plan your roadtrips where there are Tesla superchargers...) I do think it will get there - but better to stick with gas powered/hybrids for right now...

    I'm watching this thinking, imagine being the first with a car back when there were no gas stations, but road side inns with stables for the horses. Imagine if you decided to carriage-trip across Europe, and had to find a place for the night with dry stalls for your horse. And what if like your EV, your gas-fueled car needed a specific type of plug to fit to just the right gas pump.
    The point is, the infratructure takes time, but it also present opportunities for entrepreneurs, and challenges for the industry in creating standards for chargers, plugs and stations.

    • @DWTravel
      @DWTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Catharina Groiss Good Point! The question is: how long will it take to agree on a common standard? Experience shows that the industry has a very hard time with this....

    My remarks: it is really not a good idea to use American influencers in order to promote travel in Europe. They do not know that German is spoken predominantly in South Tyrol and they use Italian names instead of German:
    Lago di Braies = Pragser Wildsee
    Lago di Dobbiaco = Toblacher See

    • @DWTravel
      @DWTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the caption in the video, we did not want to deny that German is spoken in the majority in South Tyrol. In the video description we have now added the German name Pragser Wildsee.
