That was fun!! Brought me back to piecing together DJ bikes when I was just getting started. I’d love to see more people on bikes like this with all the new pumptracks and dirt jumps parks around!

Love these budget builds. I'm 28 now. When I was 13 some years old I didn't have much money or tools, now I have most of the common tools, but still, nothing exotic like bottom bracket thread cutters. For the last 15 years at least I've learned a lot from friends, local bike mechanics and youtube lately. Seeing people share the same passion makes me feel I'm not the only one creating something in a shed, garage or his apartment. Keep on grinding, man.

I started mountainbiking at your age and I love it even more today then when I first feel in love with it. After trying my luck at bmx in the local skatepark last year I feel like it's a bit too far away from my full squish enduro 29er. And honestly potentially a bit too harsh on a soon 40 year old carcass..at least when you haven't done it since you were a kid. SO, a dirtjumper came to mind. Found a good frame with mostly crappy parts on it and I'm super excited to take it from there to wherever it needs to go! Mostly worried about the 9 mm QR fork (marzocchi bomber comp -03), afraid it's gonna snap at the axle mounts 🙈

hi because of you i went out and bought an old marin b 17 downhill bike from 1998, from watching your vids and been a fan of the old school mountain bikes i got inspiration from you to go out and buy something different i used your motto to give life to old things, i set out on a mission to find a perfect bike for me and so it starts, I replaced the bottom bracket, crank set, handlebars, stem, full new break set and had it serviced. This bike is in excellent condition frame and paint work wise purl white frame and red r.s.t. forks with red swinging arm. Iam from the north of England and tuck it to the nearest bike park just this morning at hamsley forest. I loved it. I did blow out the back shock and also come off the bike over k line which is a red trail I didn't do bad for someone who has never ridden in a bike park before or hit big jumps, iam 37 and just getting into the sport, yes i maybe a little bit old to start but i had loads of fun and it was awesome i only damaged my self and not the bike lol. so getting a feel for it now iam going to make this b 17 marin a budget weapon over the next 4 months instead of spending £3000 pounds on a new bike i will invest half that into this and see where it takes me be one of a kind when iam finished. love the channel and what you do is amazing work thank you for the time you put into every video peace and love from accross the pond.

Fun stuff, and so neat that you got to meet up with @Porter MTB and his family. I am actually based in Ogden Utah, just moved here from Phoenix last year and got bitten by the MTB bug. Cheers!

I bought a 24" dirt jumper for €35 that was missing everything except the wheels and fork, and was also repainted pink and blue but the paint job was so bad, I spent a few days removing all the spray paint with acetone, trued the wheels, put some cranks I had on it and "borrowed the bars, stem and brake from my broken-down DH bike. It was a great bike, I learned a lot of new stuff on it, and had lots of fun, until the left crank broke off while I was practicing huge bunnyhops, and paralysed my right leg for a few days. After 2 weeks I bought a new bottom bracket and spent all my last money, but when it came and I installed it, the cranks were hitting the frame and the bottom bracket wouldn't spin at all when the cranks were tightened. It's been 5 weeks now since I broke the bike, haven't got the money for parts and time because of school and I haven't gone outside at all. It's quite depressing.

"It's like a cheap car"... I love the budget aspect of ANYTHING and I got my love of it building 1gA DSMs in the mid-late 90s as a teenager. Strip her down to the bare, hunt the junk yards (my first FMIC was 4 stock welded together), take it out and try to hang with the 'big boys', fail or succeed, and continue tuning it cheap as hell to get faster!
I didn't know that you were into bikes man! I remember finding your channel a couple years ago because of your thrift store hunting and restores. Plus, hearing your kids piano lessons in the background always stuck in my head. I just got into biking during the pandemic. Something I could get the family into. After almost a year I got into the budget DIY builds and my son was showing me a couple channels he was looking at. So that was pretty cool. Love your content! Thanks for sharing it!

  • @johnfrancisquiroz3197
    @johnfrancisquiroz3197 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have a few concerns about your build.
    1. The Hayes Brake. You can pickup a shimano mt-200 hydro brakes for not much more. It's better than what you currently have.
    2. The lack of front brake. The shimano mt-200 comes in pairs.
    3. The chain keeps falling out of place. You built a lot of bikes in the past and reusing one of the old derailleurs as a chain tensioner would basically be a free chain tensioner.
I hope i could help you. Much love from philippines.

Chain tensioner and an actual singlespeed rear cog. Shimano is available for like $7.00. no ramps and deeper groves.
I also would get a front load stem, not one that drops down, and 60mm or 80mm rise bars. Taller front helps pull up the front wheel and get your weight back where it needs to be.

@@ark8tct nice, ive saved a lot of bmx bikes. I bought a mirra co. Bmx that sold for $580 new, it was all rusted and scratched, missing pedals, sprocket, the chain was a twisted knot of rust, the grips were worn threw to the bars, and the inner tubes were popped and full of dirty rain water, I paid $30 for it, brought it home, sanded the paint off, and spray painted everything black and left the frame raw, got some used petals and a sprocket and chain and it rode like new, I gave it to a friend and he loves it. Now I’m always on the look out for stuff like this. Even if it’s a totally rusted and destroyed bike, I’d offer them $5 or $10 and even if I can’t fix it I’ll salvage and clean up the parts that are still good.

To keep with the cheap you could use a derailleur that's set to one gear on a shifter with only one bogey wheel on the derailleur. I had a norco manik from 2005 that I had converted to single speed with the same setup and it got stolen but while I had it, it never failed me.

I have some questions. First of all and most important which size is the frame? How much cash did you spend? And which parts did you replace and which did you keep? Thanks a lot!

Cool build on a super slim budget. Although single speed conversion kits for the rear are silly cheap last time I bought one that would've sorted the chain issue and just finished it off nicely. Also I hate bleeding those old Hayes brakes I'd just put a clarkes m2 on it. Nice and cheap, reliable and easy to maintain.
