Yes!! As a fellow lover of BMX who is excited to turn 60 next year, it tickles me to know you’re commuting on glorious 20 inch wheels!!! Much love from Colorado.
At age 50, I picked up a dirt jumper last fall to start racing bmx with my kid. My skills have improved so much even after being on a mountain bike for 25 years. I’m on it more now than any other bike I own ... skatepark, bmx track, Rays, even just around the neighborhood.
you must be a local...it's always great to see Rays as one of the "things" we do. Rays was constructed just prior to the DJ being a known thing and big manufacturers making them. It came together so nice.
Started pumping on track at 67... it's a bit hard at the beginning but really worth the effort. I actually upgraded my ride with my Rail 9.7 and my Trial TRS RR 280. You need to be really convinced of what your doing, a bit of talent and understanding to enjoy. Thank's to you guy's each video is a very good moment in life Cheer's
I'm a 61 year old female mountain biker. I tried a DJ at the local park recently and I'm hooked. I want one! haha (big kid at heart). It really helped my riding in the trail berms. Love your channel guys.
I'm 53 & rode 20" bmx exclusively until a month ago. I can't tell you how good a bit of suspension feels on my DJ bike... I took the Bmx to a pump track yesterday & I felt sketchy. DJ bikes might mean I can jump my bike way past 60 yrs old

I'm not quite 30 yet. Started riding BMX in middle school and that continued throughout high school and a few years after. Ended up stopping for one reason or another and went years without riding a bike (minus the occasional rental in a new city for example.) During the pandemic I got into MTB stuff on TH-cam. The thought of being able to take my former love for BMX (I mostly rode street and park) and mix it with hiking/the outdoors. Decided to pick up a bike about a month ago to really get into it. Landed a like new Marin San Quentin for a great price. I knew I needed something more then most beginner bikes could handle, since with my BMX experience, I knew I would be sending jumps on day 1. The San Quentin is awesome. The geometry of it is really aggressive and the 27.5 wheels feel at least somewhat familiar (29 felt massive to me lol.) I've been absolutely loving it and luckily I live in Seattle where trails are a plenty and work about 10 minutes away from Duthie Hill which is basically a purpose built progression training ground. Riding MTB is amazing (and healthy.) Really glad I took the plunge. I guess this turned into a bit of a rant lol. But the reason I even started writing this was because I love how many older dudes (and dudettes) you see on the trails. People in their 40s and 50s are a plenty and send stuff that terrifies me on the regular. Having an active hobby that you can do at an extremely high level later in life is amazing. Hell I'm sure you could ride XC in your 60s and even 70s if you took great care of your body There's not many outdoor activities that you can do for so long in life. It's just a great, healthy hobby that really everyone should try at least once. Happy to have a new obsession. Less happy that I know it's only a matter of time before I have to set my wallet on fire to pick up a proper full suspension (though for the time being, the "all mountain" hardtail I'm on is a champ. The bug will come for my bank account eventually haha. Also happy to have yet another MTB TH-cam channel to checkout. Seems like the type of people this hobby attracts (and similarly disc golf) are just good people trying to help each other share the stoke. It's really cool that you made a whole series targeted at the over 40 crowd. The whole idea of safely progressing and being methodical about how you do it in order to be safe about it is brilliant.
I'm 27 and came from a bmx background. Bought my first dirt jumper last year (24" wheels on a NS Suburban Park frame,) and now it is basically the only bike I ride. Super versatile, comfortable, and fun.

Thanks to this video, I got a dirt jumper! Never had one before (never had a BMX either). Finished building it 2 weeks ago. I had no choice but to buy a good steel frame (evil faction 2) and a nice fork (pike DJ), because everything else was sold out. With a good set of wheels, the build easily cost north of $2k. Sooo worth it though! A few seshs on the DJ and the skills/confidence transferred right over to the local MTB black diamond trail, which I had struggled to ride on my 29” hardtail. The other day, I rode it more than half a minute faster than I ever have, no joke! I’m so thankful that you started this channel, Alex! I attended Lee’s clinic a couple months ago, who told me about this channel. I’ve watched so many of your videos ever since. Seriously the best bike channel on TH-cam. Hope all is well with you 🙏
You are such a legend! This helped me to the moon! I love your enthusiasm throughout your channel and your awesome understanding, thanks heaps. I'm gonna go buy a dirt jumper! Yeww
Wasn't planning on getting one, but my sister sent me a Dartmoor DJ frame for no reason at all, so I'm building one up now. Stoked since the local trail builders just built a pump track and jumps nearby.
Love this channel! Lots of things about dirt jumps and dirt jumping! Teaching new stuffs, showing of jumps and sharing the joy of DJs! Tks for the video!
Just built up a DK cruiser to race for the first time ever at 46 years, loving the extra twitchiness and feedback on the pump track compared to my Mach 6. Can't wait to hit the BMX track on it to progress my MTB skills. Loving the vids by the way guys, I have 2 of Lee's books and it is great to see the concepts in the books put in motion on video.
Nicely done, again, fellas.🙌🏼 Nodding my head heavily at the "you see a DJ on the car, you know they can ride" comment. Nothing may ring more true every time I roll onto VBP. 🎸
I'm a roadie, and I just got my first Dirt Jumper today. Haro Thread One. Looking forward to getting it out on the jumps...without the lycra of course! 🤣🤣
I just bought a commencal RS and I love that bike I have progressed more in the DJ in one month that a whole year in my mountain bike, if you really want to learn and gain tons of confidence DJ is the best 👌👍👍
N+1. Made me laugh so hard. I just had stomach surgery yesterday. Hurts so bad to laugh. This will be a laugh I’ll never forget. Looking at my 4 bikes I currently own
At 55 years old I got a dirt jumper. Took it to the pump track once and had a ball. I bmxed as a kid and mountain bike now so it was the natural thing to do. Were I am now I is out for the season. Ruptured my left patellar tendon on the mountain bike. I look at the dirt jumper everyday (it's in my living room) and can't wait to get back on it!
There’s one reason you forgot. Do you own an expensive MTB and don’t want to wreck it learning to dirt jump? I’m currently saving up for my dream bike (2021 Slash XO1). I definitely don’t want to huck that new bike of a jump when I come up short. But I don’t want to stop progressing on dirt jumps either. That’s why I’m thinking about getting a dirt jumper.
Such a great point. One of the things I LOVE about the BMX is I just bail constantly and it is nearly impossible to hurt. Was rding indoors last night and was talking to Lee afterward about how good it is to ride a bike you can fling!!!
At 51, I love the "that guy probably shreds" looks I get with the dj on my rack. I don't yet, but I like the vote of confidence. Working on earning the looks every day.
I'm a roadie and just won a new DJ at my LBS! My son rides BMX and we have a paved pump track near by...oh and Ray's MTB too...I'm pretty pumped to try something new on two wheels. N+1 is real.
Former bmx here, thanks for the insight on this ive been looking at trail bikes for weeks and just couldn’t pull the trigger now i know i need a DJ bike. Ive been looking at canyon, dont have a giant budget.
Loved this vid , I am in the middle of building my dirt bike got a octaine one Zurcus frame & a set of manitou circus expert forks 100mm I nearl give up as here in the uk some parts are harde to get I was struggling with single speed wheels to fit my frame & forke believe it or not but have found a shop in Europe (think germany) that stock a decent selection so i am back on track , I am also 43 & used to BMX, I thought I was crazy or having a mid life crisis till i watched your vid & read all the grate comments 👍😊 I really love jumping on my trail bike but there is nothing like riding proper dirt jumps , I cant wait to get this finished & get jumping again. Keep brining the great content .
If you are pressed for time watch from 3:48 to 4:16. That’s all you need to know! (Come back and watch the rest of it though because it’s great info as usual!)
N+1 LOL. Love it. I bought one several years ago and has been building rust in my garage for some time. I just recently brought it back lo life and I'm loving every minute I spend at the dirt jumps.
Yep.... your formula is absolutely correct!!! 3 + 1 equals the number of bikes i need. Now i have 4 with a project bike in mind so that means i need 5!
I got a dirt jumper a few months ago after riding big bikes for most my career, and holy crap. Its amazing! I find myself gravitating towards my dirt jumper for every single ride, even in hilly Seattle. But I've learned so much on my dirt jumper and met lots more people as well. So if your on the fence, BUY ONE IF YOU CAN!!!
Love this!! There's something special about a hardtail bike, the feedback & responsiveness become addictive quickly & in my opinion make the big bikes even more fun when you hop back on! Enjoy the ride my friend!
Last year our town built a paved pump track!! My husband just bought me my first dirt jumper for my birthday... so far so good! Already railing the berms, hopefully it will cross over to the trails! Loving hanging with the 10 year olds!
Took the words right out of my mouth! Must haves.. Ebike, Full Suspension bike and got to have a Dirt Jumper! My DJ is the bike that makes me smile the most!
Yes I do. I need to get back on a bike ASAP and I think a DJ is the coolest thing for a Freeride enthusiast like me who doesn’t have trails and jumps in the woods nearby. I can easily place a ramp at the top of a descent in urban places and get good air
I've got a dirt jumper and a trail hardtail. Both Steel, both really heavy. The trail hardtail has 120mm travel and my Dirtjumper 100mm. My trail bike has 27.5" wheels and my dirtjumper has 26" wheels. My trail Hardtail isn't even much heavier, but I rode them both in the Bikepark, dirtpark and on a Pumptrack on the same day, and those 27.5" wheels are so much worse on the Pumptrack and so on. So yes, even if you have a short travel Hardtail, you need a Dirtjumper
Just finished building my DJ- picked up a used Santa Cruz Jackal 2008 for $250 - repainted it... and finished with 2K clear coat... speed tuned hubs on stans, Fox 32 descendent cranks, spank spoon stem,... and only a couple miles from Sapwi park - @56 I'm ready to go!
Recently found your channel. I just moved to Texas and really looking to get back into bmx and mountain biking at 36 years old. This is the perfect channel for me. Anyone around dfw looking to ride?
Guys. I love your videos. Even I won't get a dirt jumper, I still enjoy your videos. A lot of good information and inspiration for 50+ guy with a mind of a teenager.
Yep, that math formula works quite well. Just built up my new DJ today. With a new park only 20 minutes from the house, a DJ definitely became a necessity
40yo just getting back into riding after a 10 year hiatus, i bought a 2nd hand Downhill MTB running oldschool 26inch wheels, a 2014 Kona Entourage. Was a pretty tight budget but the componentry & shocks were mint & then the upgrades i had to make have made a really awesome bike, particularly the Magura MT5 brakes, they are absolutely amazing! So much power & modulation! Anyway I'm looking at getting a DJ bike to improve my skills for DH- pumping, berms & jumping.. This video got me sold! I just wish we had a decent Dirt Jump & pump track! We have lift access trails 10 mins drive from centre of town & lots of free single-track downhill, (Christchurch NZ) but no Dirt Jump facility yet, so I'll mostly be practicing pumping at the skate park, maybe dropping into some bowls (wish me luck) and pumping at a BMX racing track.. We should have a proper DJ park in a couple of years tho, & maybe one day I'll get good enough to hit Gorge Road in Queenstown! That would be a dream! Awesome video btw, you explained alot and the stoke is real!
I already have six bikes just for my other one is too much and I need more time to use them, and space to keep it's. I also lack truck to go to the mountains. The place in the video is cool. I wish I had a place like that here. Nice video, thanks for sharing.
Didn't realize I need a Dirt Jumper till now! Suggestion for future video: active vs. passive trail riding. Do you just roll through the trail or do you find places to pump, pop, and drop speed with rear wheel drift? Makes a big difference on total enjoyment of the ride. Greetings from Hong Kong, you have an international audience!
I live in two sticks Idaho falls, and finally after 46 years of living here. We've been given a little land for a dirt jump park and it gets better. 2022 we got a mountain bike park located in town! The dirt jump park is getting a new pump track as soon as the money to build it comes together. I have an OM Duro xl, and a fast Ripper. Both are a lot of fun to ride! But I am thinking that I have to buy the YT Industry's DIRTLOVE!!! well, possibly two of them. So I will have a backup dirt jump bike, just incase...
I had a Free Agent 20 inch solid frame bike- loved it pumping and jumping. But, my wrists were screaming after landing a few times from hard hits! DJ is best for this old man :)
I have some questions regarding BMX and MTB bike sizes. From my conversations with BMX enthusiasts, there's a consensus that 26-inch bikes are too large for pump tracks and tricks. They recommend a 24-inch bike for urban commuting, pump tracks, and some trick riding. However, when I discuss this with MTB riders, they immediately dismiss 24-inch bikes as suitable only for children. The Specialized P series dirt jump bikes come in various sizes: 20, 24, 26, and 27.5 inches. Given the conflicting advice and the lack of opportunities to test ride these bikes, I'm left uncertain about the best choice. I am 5'9" (178 cm) and my intended use includes dropping stairs, doing wheelies, riding pump tracks, and navigating the city, including uphill, flatland, and downhill paths. Essentially, I want a versatile bike that can handle urban commuting in an unconventional manner. How can I determine whether the 24-inch Specialized P2 will be more enjoyable and suitable for my needs compared to the 26-inch P3, given these considerations?
@@JoyOfBike I took it to the pump track this week for the first time... was amazing.... the speed you can generate round the berms was so much fun. I'm 44 and my goal is to be able to jump and tail whip... I can see it happening with this bike... love the videos m8..
My local dirt jumps have been very dry lately and we have had a decent rain season, which has rutted it, so ours aren't concrete smooth and my BMX handles it okay at lower tire pressure, but I wish I had bigger wheels and something to take the edge off small bumps in the pump roll in sections.
I see 40 on my horizon. After years of trail riding I decided to get a 20" BMX just like when I was a kid. It was sketchy as hell. Even on the pump track, let alone trying jumping or manuals. I just can't get in tune with it. So I traded it for an old Kona Shonky DJ bike. It immediately felt much more familiar and forgiving. Plus with a mega long seatpost it works as a trail bike in a pinch! The other type of bike I can think of that says "That guy goes hard" is a singlespeed mtb. Well I like to think so, I've got an old school GT Peace which is a ton of fun and bloody hard work.
Just got a paved Velosolutions pumptrack at 300m from my house. Came here to confirm bias. First the sub, now going to get a dirt bike. Show them younglings how dads roll...
Not sure how I ended up watching this (well, besides getting back into bicycles, at 57) and only 30 seconds into the video I saw that all so familiar view in the background... Boulder County Jail! LOL I lived in/ around Boulder for about 20 years... definitely need to check out the track next time I'm in the area ;)
SO funny 🤣 thank you!! Also very timely. I’ve been searching CG for a dirt jumper. No luck yet but your video has inspired me to keep looking. N+1😂😂I’m not so good at math-- neither is my wife!! @@JoyOfBike Thank you 🙏. I had a great afternoon at my local trails. Things are clicking, extending knees and ankles as my front tire clears the jump,, keeping the hinge while using my upper body to push the bike forward-brilliant. Also, adjusted rebound on rear shock -my older body thanks you.
Came for the jumping. Stayed for the eagle. That looks like so much fun. Sadly, no pump tracks around here. Won't stop me from hitting Craigslist, though.
Growing up my dad fixed up his old BMX bike for me to ride. Now I am looking to get a Dirt Jumper but with so many options I am having a hard time making a decision.

Such a great point. One of the things I LOVE about the BMX is I just bail constantly and it is nearly impossible to hurt. Was rding indoors last night and was talking to Lee afterward about how good it is to ride a bike you can fling!!!
@@JoyOfBike well you got me sold man. I now need a DJ bike lol. Looking for used one online, but people still want $1300 😬
@@JaredHoff Covid prices!! I saw some for 500 when I did the search for the vid but it is slim picking right now.
@@JaredHoff Used mountain bikes are dime a dozen dirt jumpers not so much. Therefore DJ’s hold a bit more resale value used.
Keep brining the great content .
do I need a dirt jumper? No.... Do I want a dirt jumper? Yes...
If you are pressed for time watch from 3:48 to 4:16. That’s all you need to know! (Come back and watch the rest of it though because it’s great info as usual!)
: )
N+1 LOL. Love it. I bought one several years ago and has been building rust in my garage for some time. I just recently brought it back lo life and I'm loving every minute I spend at the dirt jumps.
Like a Phoenix from the dust pile!!
Yep.... your formula is absolutely correct!!!
Most smiles per mile for sure
Yes I do. I need to get back on a bike ASAP and I think a DJ is the coolest thing for a Freeride enthusiast like me who doesn’t have trails and jumps in the woods nearby.
I can easily place a ramp at the top of a descent in urban places and get good air
Great humor! I like the mathematical equation you gave!
This is the comment I was looking for! I can safely go out and buy that dj on pink bike, the pull is irresistible now😊
Just finished building my DJ- picked up a used Santa Cruz Jackal 2008 for $250 - repainted it... and finished with 2K clear coat... speed tuned hubs on stans, Fox 32 descendent cranks, spank spoon stem,... and only a couple miles from Sapwi park - @56 I'm ready to go!
So cool to see Standard bikes on youtube. I live next to their headquarters so it's sick to see a local company on here.
Sucks a sick bike and company!!
Hahaha. “Such”
Recently found your channel. I just moved to Texas and really looking to get back into bmx and mountain biking at 36 years old. This is the perfect channel for me. Anyone around dfw looking to ride?
Get this man a riding wingman!
Guys. I love your videos. Even I won't get a dirt jumper, I still enjoy your videos. A lot of good information and inspiration for 50+ guy with a mind of a teenager.
Hahaha. No pressure. Just sharing a fun option. Keep shredding!
Love your stuff man! So helpful. Thanks!
AWESOMENESS!!! 😎
Thank you for sharing this with us!!!
quickly becoming my favorite channel. 45 and can relate to pretty much everything. Bought one after borrowing my buddies. So fun
Thanks and congrats on the purchase!!
Great job guys! I've just built one and it's gonna prepare me for another XC racing season with so much fun. Thanks!
stay away from xc
XC is great when done right!
🤣 the mathematical equation for needing another bike. I was like "yes, and there's science to prove it"
I have bmx 24" cruiser, best of both worlds :)
I spent a weekend in Miami on a 24. (Sounds like movie) Loved it.
I'm 46, park near my house just opened a new paved pump track and I just bought a dirt jumper. Wish me and my old bones luck.
After reading the comments, I'm a young man here. 👍
hahaha, again thanks for your honesty! "Thanks dad!", Love it!
😂 The truth hurts less when I share it!!
@@JoyOfBike so true!
@@JoyOfBike Right!?!?!
I already have six bikes just for my other one is too much and I need more time to use them, and space to keep it's. I also lack truck to go to the mountains. The place in the video is cool. I wish I had a place like that here. Nice video, thanks for sharing.
It‘s so funny, the topics you bring up, somehow totally correlating... I bought a Dirtjumper two weeks ago :D
We’re all on the same journey of shred!!
I like your attitude and tone. Channel wouldn't be the same if it was done by someone else. Love it. Thanks for the education.
Thanks for your formula. It really works! Got a P3 and am loving the DJ life. It's like its own sport!
my back hurts just watching this lol. Great video guys!
I bought my first DJ at 38. It's a great skill building bike!
So good!!
Awesome, I'm turning 38 very soon and now I'm looking to give myself a DJ as a birthday gift. Being around 200lbs, is aluminum out of the question?
@@nosreuter If it is a quality frame, aluminum should be super stout.
@@JoyOfBike Thx for the reply!!
@@nosreuter No way, go for it.
I used the formula and determined I needed a DJ! I just bought a LEAF CYCLES RULER PRO DIRT JUMPER .
Hello Hong Kong!!!
Just send it m8
I live in two sticks Idaho falls, and finally after 46 years of living here. We've been given a little land for a dirt jump park and it gets better. 2022 we got a mountain bike park located in town! The dirt jump park is getting a new pump track as soon as the money to build it comes together. I have an OM Duro xl, and a fast Ripper. Both are a lot of fun to ride! But I am thinking that I have to buy the YT Industry's DIRTLOVE!!! well, possibly two of them. So I will have a backup dirt jump bike, just incase...
I love that video. I'm 47 and it's actually how I feel! I have a BMX and wish I could ride it the way I want to!
I had a Free Agent 20 inch solid frame bike- loved it pumping and jumping. But, my wrists were screaming after landing a few times from hard hits! DJ is best for this old man :)
They are so harsh. I swear I can sprain a wrist just pulling my 20 out of my truck!!!
Pump comparison is awesome! 1:50
Just picked up a Norco Ryde an hour ago after always riding bmx..it's now dark cold and winter but I'm hanging to ride it ..I'm 41 lol
Yes, DJ on the car is the ultimate :) btw, love my Pivot Point, so much fun at pumptrack, dirt jumps and skateparks!
That looks sweet. I had a pivot firebird. Love it but it was stolen. : (
I recently got myself a Kona Shonky and a MTB Hopper ramp. I absolutely LOVE it! Loving the videos as well!!!
That's a fun combo. Those ramps are rad!!
Great stuff Alex! At over 50, I recommend the rare and elusive slopestyle bike for "old man knees". Oh and your math is spot on.
We didn’t crack open the Slopestyle bike can of worms. Not a bad way to go.
so good thanks so much for your thoughtful and inspiring videos
Nice Standard. I have 2. One set up as a DJ the other set up as a 26 BMX cruiser
Saw this video... 4 weeks later I now own a dirt jump bike ... n+1 was bang on :)
Yesbro!
I’m 41 just sold my pbj and got a brand new P4 today with friends and family. So stoked.
RAD!!!
Wow, throwback at the end of the vid seeing AdamLZ's bmw with his bmx on top!🤘
Just got a paved Velosolutions pumptrack at 300m from my house. Came here to confirm bias. First the sub, now going to get a dirt bike.
Show them younglings how dads roll...
YES YOU DO!!!!! havnt raced bmx in 15 years and two weaks ago i started racing bmx on my 26" blackmarket and smashin it!!!
Even more reasons!!!
The formula to get more bikes is fantastic 🤣
SO funny 🤣 thank you!! Also very timely. I’ve been searching CG for a dirt jumper. No luck yet but your video has inspired me to keep looking. N+1😂😂I’m not so good at math-- neither is my wife!!
I’m currently learning to jump my 50# specialized Levo E bike. Love the channel. Sending you guys big love from Central Oregon ✨🙌🏼
Welcome to the team. Sending love back from CO!
Sending some love back from COLORADO!!
Rob Nelson I had a good couple hours on the BMX today!! Rejuvenated!
I’m 52 and still ride rigid fork DJ. Now In full clarity my MTB full suspension bike is 160mm lol.
Came for the jumping. Stayed for the eagle. That looks like so much fun. Sadly, no pump tracks around here. Won't stop me from hitting Craigslist, though.
Go to the local parks and rec and talk to them about a velosolutions track. YOU NEED THAT AND THE KIDS NEED IT. NO KIDDING!!! Yes I'm yelling. : )
Growing up my dad fixed up his old BMX bike for me to ride. Now I am looking to get a Dirt Jumper but with so many options I am having a hard time making a decision.
You guys are killing it!!! Love these videos!!! Okay looking at DJ’s now. There is a pump track close to me. Rode it with my suspension locked out. does that count? I think I know the answer. Ha!
Hey Mark! It all counts.
It does cause any bike and any terrain is better than not riding. But the DJ is the ultimate pump track machine.
Im glad to see guys older than me doing this
Due to budget my DJ is monocog 29er!!
2 months after writing my comment I've got my Ticket S built. Really tricky to try and get used to. Confidence knocker. But when I get back on my XL Kenevo SL I notice improvements so something must be working
