  • Side control is the most oppressive and miserable position to be stuck under. There are as many ways to escape as there are variations of side control, but the question I am asked more than any other by people is how to get out of a heavy pressure side control. In this video I show a couple of the most effective strategies to get you unstuck from that smashy bottom position.

    Brand new white belt. And I needed this vid. I feel like my biggest weakness is bottom side control currently. I will def be practicing these a lot due to the fact I always am in this situation haha.

    • @ncooty
      @ncooty 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a bit of advance encouragement, in case you need it at some point: Don't be discouraged. Guys will continue to modulate their game to keep up with yours, so you'll just keep tapping. Stick with it and just work on taking longer to tap. Before you know it, you'll be stringing things together. Just keep at it.

    • @kuhlbeans
      @kuhlbeans 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ncooty appreciate it. I went in knowing I would be getting smashed for a while. There is one day where I thought I was going to give up. But I can find small victories in my game every day. Escapes and even some passes. Loving it so far.

    • @ncooty
      @ncooty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kuhlbeans: I remember being very discouraged early on, because nothing I tried worked. It took me a while to realize things were "working" in as much as I was making other guys have to work harder. (I was in a gym full of colored belts.) I also got discouraged because I couldn't think fast enough to string things together, so I'd half escape only to get smashed again. I'm sure I'm projecting, and you're cruising along, but I know how much I valued knowing that other people struggled as well.
      Of course, if you have the luxury of rolling with new white belts, you'll see your progress regularly. :) Either way, I hope you get from it at least half of what I've gotten from it, and that you have the privilege of passing it on.

    • @user-fw8wt4qo3o
      @user-fw8wt4qo3o 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      One month in, i can deal with the being exhausted but as a 6’ 170 pound guy, having these big dudes crush me in bottom side control is my biggest fear. Idk if im claustrophobic but it’s one of my most glaring weaknesses rn

    • @kuhlbeans
      @kuhlbeans 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-fw8wt4qo3o I’ve been going consistently sense I’ve commented. I’m now a 1 stripe blue belt. My biggest advice is avoid side control. I know that it’s easier said than done. If I know I’m going to get passed. I’ll turtle and attempt a grambi roll or to Face my partner right away. Side control is a pain for sure. If you are in it stay calm and find an opening they will go for something and that’s when you can escape. Hope this helps.

    I always get stuck after I reinsert the knee and they push it back out just like you described - it never occurred to me to scoop their arm. 🤯 Also, some partners kill my efforts to reguard by sprawling their south hip, and it’s good to know that’s a perfect time to capture their leg with a kosoto hook and sweep them. 🤯 It’s like you know what problems people commonly have.
