Hello, Jim! Thanks for sharing your views about this book! I highly recommend "the solheniztsyn reader", a commented compilation of various works by Solzhenitsyn. Particularly, "Matryona's House" struck me deeply.

Thank you, I would argue that this book should be required reading in all Australian high schools, but I am sorry to say, I don't give it very good odds!

There are passages in the book referring to an herbal remedy the main character (who is actually Solzhenitsyn) is also taking, much to the disapproval of his doctor. I'm curious as to what that was since Solzhenitsyn apparently lived to the age of 90 without the recurrence of cancer.

I remember the story line of this 'alternative' remedy. It runs right through the book. Thnak you for picking it up. What was it? I never got a clear idea, but it was a type of fungus I think that grew in the leaf litter of a certain tree. I am thrilled it was a natural product not something cracked out of petroleum. The whole story of the 'search' for it and the 'purchase' of it, and as you say contrary to the stock standard chemo and radiation that kills good cells as well as the bad ones.

@@jimtwelves1636 I've read Solzhenitsyn's three volumes of memoirs in English (Oak and the Calf and Between Two Millstones 1 & 2) but he doesn't mention it (though those really cover his post-Cancer Ward life). And I don't recall it being mentioned in the biographies I've read. He was a big believer in extreme stress causing cancer. He states emphatically in Oak and the Calf that the poet, Alexander Tvardovsky, would not have gotten cancer had he been permitted to live a peaceful life in a free country.
