In 2021, I earned a professional certificate in data analytics from Coursera. I completed the course in June and quickly landed my first job as a Junior Healthcare Data Analyst at a prominent company. Notably, I don't have any prior tertiary education; I went straight to Coursera and completed the course in just five months. It only took me two months to secure my first role as a healthcare data analyst. Next year, I plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of South Africa
Absolutely amazing! Happy for you! 💯💥
I'm currently doing that google course as well as studying BCom statistics and economics at UWC. Thank you for your comment...it just encouraged me
Do you have previous work experience and what it is?
@@TheLeloMhey dear, may you please share more info on how and where I can apply for the Bcom
How much are you earning as a junior
I have a Masters in Big Data Science, the pay is quite good. The nice thing is that you can move even higher and international.
Beautiful, what's the difference between Big Data and Data Analytics?
Hi Johnny, I work in the IT support and entry level data analysis space for a mining company. Decent money. My question I have for you is, how hard would it be for you to move from data science into machine learning?
@@Fortune_VoyagingNot hard at all it's all within the same ball park
@@Vhuimo Thanks for the feedback. I feel like Neo in the Matrix trying to follow the white rabbit 🐰😂🤦🏽
@@liferesetwithboni Big Data is in the same space of Data Analytics, but more specialised. It caters for machine learning, mathematical optimisation etc. Data analytics would be the first step, then Data Science wherein Big Data is the speciality within the field
I've noticed that in South Africa, there's often a misunderstanding between the roles of a Data Scientist and a Data Analyst among individuals and companies. Even when companies post job listings for Data Analysts, the actual work often turns out to be that of a Data Scientist. This confusion can also extend to payslips, where someone might have a high salary typically associated with a Data Scientist, but their payslip still lists them as a Data Analyst.
Interesting observation !
Companies do that when they are looking for cheap labour so instead they higher a data analyst who perform duties of a Data Scientist but being paid as a Data Analyst
Sponsor's Syabonga, the village is growing and being recognized!!!
I just double tapped the comment, lol 😊
BIG UPS TO UCT & GETSMARTER for sponsoring our village girl. That was such a great episode sis. Just a quick question: Is the 20% discount also applicable if one opts to pay over 3 months?
Hey Sompisi, that's a great question, I'm not sure at the moment, but I've asked for you,
but you can also enquire using my link.
Hey sis Boni congratulations on your new sponsor, I really like the way you did the Segway of the ad/live read shows you still got that radio bug in ya, I mean it was very natural unlike what creators do
Hi , how did you know I was on radio?.🤣🤣🤣

Thank you so much for this information, O star 🌟
You are welcome!
The best thing about the tech industry is you really don't need a degree to be successful. as long as you're good at it you should do fine. There are a few companies that still prefer some sort of degree, but most now a days, will take you if you prove you're proficient enough during the interview process. There's a bunch of free courses online that you can pick up, but the most in demand fields I've noticed are BI, Data Analytics, AI and Machine Learning. However in general most Development jobs are in high demand still. I've been working now for 8 years, which should prove my point
I have been doing some research regarding this Data Analyst course, it about time to start already tried to get some funding from my company🤞🤞🤞🤞❤
Perfect! Please use my promo code Boni2024 to get a 20% discount .

Thank you Boni for your consistency and the work you are putting in to inform us and keeping our minds open and knowledgeable. Your impact as a content creator in our South African screens and society is powerful and helpful more than you may realize.
Thank you! Consistency is key, I'm so blessed to have this opportunity on the internet.
Thank you for all you do Sis Boni 🌺
You are welcome 😊
Hi boni thanks for this video im hopefully thinking of changing my course Next year because before i saw this video i was really stranded here at NMU doing engineering and it's really hard for nothing because mechanical engineers are underpaid and to obtain this degree is really demanding since you must also know how to Draw 😭This video convinced me to change my course to computer science but im afraid because i think in the future they'll be little jobs for computer scientist because everyone is heading to computer science and i don't want to struggle to find a job when i graduate 😔 since i want to change my background while my family is around. Your Channel is really amazing thanks for your effort as South Africans we need such information to change our backgrounds and contribute to the economy of South Africa❤️.
Hhay bo, why don't you finish your engineering degree and get into tech consulting and do short courses. I've done 2 videos her with engineers that are now in consulting. Let me know if you haven't seen them or can't find links. It's the Cyber Security Consultant and Supply Chain Management consulting working in Saudi Arabia with a Chemical Engineering. Engineering opens so many doors, I would say finish it, and do short courses to get into tech. That's my 2 cents
Yooh!! sorry Dear, I can feel u pains I also did mechanical engineering but diploma for now and all I can say is mech Eng is really challenging but the moment I finished my diploma I went to enroll for Data science in Richfield now I am doing my second year
But my advise for u is to finish up ur mech Eng bcz it will be useful for u one day I am also working with my mech Eng diploma as I am studying towards my BSc in data science.
But if you feel like mech Eng is wasting ur time and money u can just transition into data science to avoid wasting ur time, fees and energy
@@masi5815 thank you sir I'm thrilled to here such crucial info and I'm also glad the village created by our mother @Boni is drastically changing lives and if it wasn't for her I wouldn't hv connected with u🙏🏿. I was really stranded cause many bursaries want Beng/BSc in engineering instead of bengtech so it was a pain in the ass but none I'm enlightened 🙏🏿. I will also share this info with others thanks mfowethu and also to our mother 🙏🏿🙏🏿.
Back in 2009 I told myself I won't study for IT since everyone was going into IT at the time. I did mechanical engineering and worked in mining, 10 years later 2020 I enrolled for IT. I'm now a DevOps engineer in 2024.
@@hotwings9382 it means we're all having the same hesitation when it comes to starting our careers 😭😭, I'm afraid of going to IT because of AI it's really doing everything Andi don't want to find myself in 15 years unemployed 🤦🏿♂️. I repeat Sis Boni is carrying the whole country on her back...halala we gonna get employed

Hi Boni, is it possible that in future videos, you specify the ethnicity of the pay slip owners, for example if they are white, black or Indian. Thanks
No, though I know their ethnicity but it's not the conversation I want to have on this platform. 😊
@@liferesetwithboni noted with thanks ✌✌
With regards to the low provident fund , To maximise you investment portfolio and Tax breaks while getting more money in your hand you wouldn't want to contribute the maximum amount of money to your companies Provident fund but instead have your own portfolio and RA outside that can be more worthwhile.
Thanks for the info 😊🙌🏿
Regular 💥🎊
@@liferesetwithboni Of course 😊
The 2nd payslip is questionable reason being the retirement fund contributions, it’s way below the minimum of 5%
I know hey
Here is my suspicion: because the person has about 9 years of experience and looking at the payslip lacking other deductions (such as medical aid) I'm assuming this person is a contractor and some of the contracting companies don't have a provident / R.A deduction and perhaps this was a relatively new thing that was introduced. So maybe the person has another personal R.A / P.F where they are saving for retirement. Lol it's hard to say, I'm also just speculating
Hi Boni. Can you also look at the Udemy Data Science and Data Analytics Bootcamp offerings. Has anyone completed these and what does the market job reception look like.
Thanks…
Hello, I'm not familiar with Udemy at all. Of course, my focus on this video was on the UCT one, what they have to offer, etc, considering how many people have been concerned about accreditations and stuff.
I wanna study information systems next year im interested in cyber security engineering 😊
Are you in Matric?
Go for it. It is very fun.
As good as these certificates are companies will always choose someone with a degree over you. If you get an offer it will be considerably lower. I say this as someone who is a software engineer with three years experience working in one of the big banks
It really depends. It's not always. There's companies that specifically want you to have a traditional degree for certain roles because you'll be working with clients or something and they've been preaching about their workforce being from Prestigious universities.
I have a friend who's at a bank. 3 years experience and he's making bank - excuse the pun.
You just need to find the right companies, which is not always easy.
But I get the gist of your point and you're right, SA is still fixated on degrees
I'm happy that I've been in a position to see people getting into tech and making good money without a degree, I've interviewed them, and still more interviews are coming. If there is an opportunity for people to transition to tech, I say they should grab it with both hands. Tech is skill based, get those skills!
It depends, and I've been fortunate to have seen it happening for many people on this platform. Be on a lookout for more no degree tech salaries and interviews.
@@liferesetwithboni I'm not saying that people without degrees don't get jobs. What I'm saying is most of the time a company will choose the candidate that has a computer science degree over the one that doesn't. Yes a candidate without a degree can be skilled HOWEVER 9 times out of 10 a company will choose a candidate with a degree in computer science especially if it's an honours or masters degree over the candidates that don't have a degree.
@@blankdevs you're right there are candidates without degrees that are making money but that is definitely not the norm. It's hard to find a company that would choose a candidate that doesn't have a degree for a data science role over a candidate that has a masters degree in stats, computer science or maths. Especially a company in the JSE top 40

Can you become a data scientist with an information system degree?
You need to check the data scientist jobs for the requirements and see if you have those skills required. Most people start at data analyst level and progress, but I hope someone in this field can answer you.
But sis Bonny can you get a job after completion without experience?
