      A.T.U Soldat Data aside it doesn’t take a genius to figure out the massive mechanical problems of slapping a huge ass gun on a giant mechanically complex steel brick. It’s not allied bias either. The Churchill series, Pershing tanks, IS series, basically every single heavy tank ever invented regardless of the home country suffered from massive mechanical problems. Which aside from the invention of advanced anti-tank weapons and next generation air power, is why heavy tanks met the same fate as the Battleship.
      Now all things aside the Tiger is still an iconic tank, even its mechanical problems can’t take that away from it. And at the end of the day I just made my original post for a Star Wars meme

    • @barthoving2053
      @barthoving2053 3 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Did not destroy the ring. The shot either jammed a piece of metal of the shell between the turret and the hull or deformed some metal of the tank to the same effect. The first you can remove and the latter you can grind out. Or it knocked the mechanism out of alignment. What ever it was would not be hard to repair at a workshop. To jam that amount of weight only requires a little imperfection. Somewhere out there is a video of a Ferdinand/Elephant where a piece of shrapnel of a couple of centimetres got between the front sprocket and the hull, jammed it and took it out of action. That shrapnel basically gets forged welded on impact.

      And the rockets had almost no chance of hitting a concealed or moving tank. Rockets where used to strafe trains, long convoys of trucks and fortified positions. Things that either dont move, are vulnerable to close by explosions or move in a long predictable pattern. Nothing but myths and false propaganda concerning the efficiency of the airborne rockets. In reality, less than 4% of rockets hit their target and in reality those targets werent tanks. Maybe once or twice in a daring attempt, but over all, no. Would be a waste of rockets to try and hit a moving tank or a concealed tank. Besides, tanks on the attack had AA with them. Convoys were seldom protected by AA.
      And on the western front, once they broke through, the allies moved so fast through France, that the airfields couldnt keep up and "calling in air support" would take at least an hour if at all possible.
      Bombs are way more effective against tank formations. Just study the German StuKa. Plus, the Germans were one of the few major forces in WW2 to actually coordinate the army with the air force. US and Brits usually used planned strikes against depots, convoys and other things that hampered the Germans more than direct tank bombing.

    I hadn't seen this beast up close before, and I didn't know that there was some nice, subtle camouflage paint there. It's SO cool for this grand dragon to be able to operate(mostly, of course; it'd be a nuisance if the smoke generators worked, and way too much trouble to get and keep the 88mm main gun working - although I bet they could outfit an old quarry with some stands, and people would pay to see it blow up old cars!) It's like Tiger 131 is an old friend, by now.

      @Justin batchelar
      When Operation Barbarossa began, the Soviets had around 10,000 tanks operational of which only 967 were T-34s. The majority of Soviet tanks were light tanks, T-28s (15mm armour) and BT-7s (22mm) with 45mm guns that could only penetrate German medium tanks armour at point blank. That's why the Germans won virtually every tank battle; the Panzer Divisions spearheading the attacks were equipped with Panzer III Es with 30mm of armour and 50mm guns with similarly equipped Panzer IVs intended to support infantry and lower velocity gun. They shrugged off Soviet light tank shells and could pierce the armour of those light tanks at as much as 2km. Germans tankers joked they just had to spit on a Soviet tank and it would blow up. And then they encountered the T-34 and KV-1.
      Most of the 2,000 plus T-34s were knocked out by mechanical failure, having only been introduced the previous year and the design not having been refined. The Soviet tank crews also had not been trained to fix their vehicles at this point.
      Their appearance however threw the entire German campaign into disarray because the standard German 37mm anti-tank gun had no effect on a T-34 and Panzer IIIs had to close to point blank to penetrate their sloped 45mm armour. The T-34 also possessed a 76mm gun which could do to the Panzers what the Panzers had done to the Soviet light tanks; kill them at 2km.
      Together with the KV-1 and KV-2, they demonstrated that the Soviets possessed a vastly superior tank which they were now going to mass produce (They started Barbarossa with less than a 1000 and had lost 2000 by the end of year; demonstrating the Soviet ability to replace their losses and reinforce) Only heavy artillery (105mm) and 88mm flak guns could take on T-34s and KVs.
      The T-34 directly resulted in the development of the Panther which featured the same sloped armour and sped up the deployment of the Tiger which resulted in that tanks many mechanical issues. It saw the Panzer III rendered obsolete and the hasty conversion of the infantry support Panzer IV upgraded into the anti-tank role. The Stug III assault gun was developed into a tank destroyer to take on T-34s.
      It was 1943 before the Germans had closed the technology gap the T-34 had opened, and the Soviets promptly upgraded the T-34 with an 85mm gun. German heavy tanks were superior to the T-34 but the T-34 was always better than the German medium tanks. Hence the intention for the entire Panzer force to be replaced with Panthers, which due to production issues of course never happened. The Soviets also fielded the IS-2/3 which rivalled the Tiger. They also built 5,000 of them, compared to 1300 Tigers.

    I piloted one of these in The Great Rodent War of 2027. Great machine, especially once we figured out it was capable of inter-galactic space travel.
    Fun Fact: The left bay engine compartment is run by a cabal of semi-literate opossums who operate it independently of the rest of the tank.

      Ah yes!
      Good German "possum wheel" technology.
      You know, if time travel was possible back to WW2, Germany would still lose the war from a sheer lack of interest thereof of modern Germans not wanting their country to win the war and miss out on all the Marshal Plan economic largesse that essentially modernized their industries and made the German Economic Miracle possible!

    When I was a Marine back in '76 my barracks was right next to a tank trail. I used to get a shiver up my spine (no kidding here) when you could hear that metallic, high pitched squeaking sound coming your way. Best way to hear the very same sounds is in 'Saving Private Ryan' when they're waiting to spring the ambush as the German armor and troops are coming into the town.
