Mr. Boost, my belt shredded at about 52k miles (2017 Q50 Red), and had no idea this was an issue. After looking under the hood and seeing what the problems was, I googled how to change the belt, and found your video. A buddy found the belt after four tries (Houston, Southside), and even though you didn't have a layout, we used it with another image to get the job done in the dark. (You weren't kidding about that tensioner). At the dealer for my next service, they said I had some damaged to other houses and belts under the carriage, and that the price would be starting at $1100. I used the INFORMATION YOU GAVE ME(!!!!) about Nissan knowing about this issue to have them call Nissan and HAVE IT DONE FOR FREE EVEN THOUGH MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. I'm glad you came up on my frantic search, and I owe ya one. Spreading the love!
Issue 1 fix : Get the car checked out. Issue 2 fix : Get a catch can or air/oil separator. Issue 3 fix : Make sure you use the right fuel.
pcv = positive Crank case ventilation; pvc = polyvinyl chloride ( pipes)
2016 Q50 Red Sport with 90k miles. Absolutely 0 issues. Raced it, pushed it, never an engine issue
Update?? And any issues with tech?
3.7? Engine?
3.0 TT at 102k now
@@markcastillo1934 no he said red sport it’s a 3.0 twin turbo
@@chrissmelley149 any issues?
After reading all these comments about problems, I’m questioning myself on getting a q60....
Eh every car will have their problems. I wouldn’t let this discourage you man.
Same here... my ecoboost had issues so im thinking of the new 3.5 or 3.0 ecoboost. Or just a Q60 butttt... here we are
@@vu__ preach on brother 😂 true true
Coming from the Subaru world, WRX/Sti (had both, and both highly modded) just used to checking oil.Turbo engines just go through oil. So before 5k my Q60 was down almost a quart.Just bought so oil and keep it in my truck. And agree with you on not waiting until 10k for oil change. I did mine at 5k and will keep doing ever 5k. Just for better piece of mind
Thank you and your right
Just buy a Lexus instead.
Changed the wifes new Highlander at 1K, then 5K and have now bumped it to 5500... Oil is a main variable... it just makes sense..... I don't have $45K to go buy another over priced cheap Yota Car... and Wouldn't!! the interior is a real let down compared to QX80's Lexus, Suburban's, Tahoes….
What kind of oil do u put for ur q50 man
The people commenting "no issues at 15k miles" lmao uhh bro that's still brand new, like shit congratulations not having your car break down on the drive home from the dealer 🤣. Let's check back at 50k+
Hell even 50k is still pretty fresh, I would check back at around 75k
Lmao exactly! My engine just went out at 88k. That's real driving with the engine not 20k. I'm really upset about this and don't know what to do. It's ridiculous that my engine went out before 100k and all I have is a jb4 and a custom muffler setup
@@KingDavidPraiseYHWH did this really happen ? I just bought a 2017 Q50s 3.0T awd , 78k miles
Damn bro you are worrying me lol. I just bought a 2018 Q50 Red Sport today at 41k miles and it runs insanely good compared to my 2014 Q50 Hybrid Sport.
@@KingDavidPraiseYHWH should have gone for a custom tune
Damn I just got a 2020 q50 ): fingers crossed nothing happens I’ll be taking more notes Thankyou for everything!
Same I’m having problems over heating
35k mile 3.0T luxe unmodded 0 problems so far. Fingers crossed!
🙏🏽
My 2018 Q50 Red Sport needed its engine replaced after the oil ran super low. Only 68XX miles and it started to knock. Upon examination my dealer found shrapnels of metal in the oil pan. They replaced it under warranty and so far, I’ve had absolutely no issue. I’ve been on this new engine for about 1500 miles now and it’s running fine, obviously don’t wanna push it too much yet but it’s doing good. Now I know that I’m not alone though 😂😂😂
I would change your oil & filter soon. I changed out the oil & filter on my '17 Q60S initially @ 1k miles, and every 4-5k miles since. Now @ 19k miles, my engine uses no oil between change intervals, and I am modded.
Aero Man I appreciate the advice man, I actually just got a new intake and exhaust, been checking my oil twice a week and haven’t had any issue since. Looking to make this car faster so hopefully this routine will save me and the engine from any future issues
@@ili.qfiddy The VR30DDTT engine has alot of potential. Last fall, my Q60 Red Sport put down 437 WHP & 502 WTQ on a DynoJet AWD dyno w/93 octane.
One more note on oil changes, I take a sample of oil at every oil change and send it to Blackstone Labs for analysis. For $28, I can track how much metal is in the oil, and just as important, how much fuel is in the oil. With Direct Injection, fuel dilution is a concern, and can reduce viscosity over time. I found I shouldn't go over 5k miles between changes, as the fuel dilution reduced my 5W30 to a 5W20 in one sample. YMMV...
I'll also be running a Catch Can soon... Mishimoto has released a nice setup for the VR30DDTT for $200 (pre-order). It will be available in March 2019.
Currently cleaning the oil out of the driver side(pre-turbo). Thx for conforming my thoughts! Great vid/info!
17 q50 3.0t prem. 65k miles
thats coming from the pcv valve
Did u have any issues with the car yet? Is it stock?
Hi this just happened to me @61,000 miles. Luckily the service tech knew about bulletin. Get it checked!
I purchased my 2017 q50 premium pre owned at 13k miles. Now there is 28k and all I have done is get a full synthetic oil change every 5k miles. I Only get Mobil 93 gas and I haven't had any issues at all.
Just purchased me pre owned at 22k love it so far hopefully I won’t have any either 🙏🏾
I ve been beating the shit out my 17 red sport for 2 years and have had 0 issues... stock tho
dari abel have you had any front axel issues??
good to know im about to purchase one tomorrow lol .. but 2016
Well I’ve purchased her and I’m extremely happy with my purchase... the experience with Infiniti was pretty shitty to say the least, from assuming I was a broke kid to loosing the keys on day of test drive for hour plus... gym was making smart comments the whole time lol. Wish I just paid it in cash and told him to fuck himself lol but I have to build credit -.- I’ll pay it off at the end of the year instead
BEN DOVER keep us updated, I’m a college student planning on buying the ‘16 q50 with the twin turbo
BEN DOVER Glad I’m not the only one who thinks that Nissan/INFINITI have a habit of judging a book by its cover. I went in to get a little Altima as a typical commuter and I got turned down despite my credit being decent (needed a car badly at the time). Their customer service is all round atrocious. I’m currently looking at a Q50 myself, just not sure to go VQ or VR.
Need an oil catch can.....problem solved 👍
Any turbo car or Direct injection car needs a oil catch can.
I have read some scary stuff on the Q50 forums about engines being replaced. The old VQ37 was almost maintenance free but this car will require bmw levels of maintenance. My best advice for Q50/60 buyers is if you can't afford a big repair bill PLEASE get a warranty. I know how stressful repairs can be and it isn't worth it.
I've had my 2014 Q50 3.7 AWD for almost 2 years and she's been great. Just got my oil changed and tires done today and was told for my next appt we should do spark plugs and I know I also need a valve cover gasket. So I'll get both done at the same time since it's apart anyway. She's just shy of 100k and I absolutely love my car. My last car was a dodge crapvenger. Now that was a nightmare of a money milker. While the infiniti definitely isn't cheap, I'll still take it over something that needs repairs every week. Seems all vehicles these days are a crapshooot. All we can do is research some stuff we like and narrow down the choices. Nothings gonna be perfect and there will always be lemons, or something not properly put together no matter the brand. People build cars and everyone has off days. The quality of a Friday built car may not be the same as a Monday built car for example. It's luck of the draw, some will have positive experiences and some will not. 2 years in for me and I would not choose another car over this one.
I replaced Ac belt from dealer. I found out noise when AC is on and at 3500 RPM. Open your windows and listen if you hear some noise go replace them. 2017 q50 premium.
Agreed
No need to replace if not damaged. You need to have your ac compressor realigned. There’s a tsb for it.
Question, does warranty cover the belt issue? Currently at 66k. 2017 Q50S

Bought my 2016 q50 I complained about my serpentine belt when I was about to buy it but the sales person said it was fine .. 3 Months Later blew my coolent & O RING, C-O Ring , and Serpentine Belt All In One! MADE A HUGE CONPLAINT when I took it to the dealer and they replaced them with new parts thank you @boostinmotion I’m learning more and more about my 16’ Q50 your videos are a huge help! But honestly I regret getting a 2016 q50 I should’ve gotten the 2015 3.7 🤣🤣
No major issues at all lol. Serpentine is a minor adjustment to fix it. And the Easiest permanent fix for PCV is to buy an oil catch can- $70 for a good one $20 for eBay one
Just had my injectors go out 2016 Q50 RS and had them replaced at the dealership, I also had my fuel rail replaced.... Too all my VR30 people save up your pennies... they hit me for $4000!!!
Hey Boost I hav a 2017 q50 3.0t pre I'm tuned wit just lower dwn pipes now my turbos are smoking white smoke wen idling wat turbos can I get to stop the white smoke?
PCV = POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILIATION... Not PVC.

Lol i try so hard not to do this too
To be fair he said pcv the first time :)

This is highly informational. I was curious on these newer designs since they moved away from the VQ bases lol. Good video!
I heard no mention of the porous block issue.
This is an old video from 6 years ago the platform has grown more knowledgeable about the issues over time. I made videos on my page to try to update people in 2024-2025
2018 Q50 luxe owner here.
Bought mine used, it was a rental car before I got it.
Currently has 37,500 miles.
I use rotella T6 with a gtr oil filter.
The car loves it! Just wanted to throw that out there.
No issues with the car so far.
Zack Miller maaan. Never would I ever buy a rental car
Nothing wrong with buying a rental 🤔 In many cases the car will actually be better cared for than a private owned one
Plantman people dog out rentals
Finaokiid not at all.. who wanna be responsible for paying money if you mess something up in a rental? Especially with a 2018 Q50 not just any person is renting that kinda car
@@F80wizard a Q50 infinity isn't a Camaro or Forte , Ford whatever that things called, those are the ones that get rented by kids and destroyed!! **Economy car I'm not sure what they classify a Q50 as? not Mid Size? I'd say luxury car?
At around 34000 miles my 2017 q50 had a misfire under warranty they had to fix it at no charge but I had just done an oil change about 600 miles prior and always pump premium fuel it just happens overall love this car and I'm looking to get an older gtr and I don't plan to trade in the q50
2018 Q60 RS400 - came with 4 permanent flat spots in tires (warranty) , TPMS drops out and comes back 2-3 days later (not fixed), sometimes car does recognize the key and wont start, wont open the drivers door (not fixed), break down after tranny control modual failure, followed by 5 -6 hard shifts in 5 weeks (not fixed yet, but known) , and the grand issue -drum roll- excessive gas in oil. car has 9600 miles, has had ELEVEN OIL CHANGES with oil samples taken at each change. Spoke with Infiniti corporate last night, probably going to buy the car back.
Yep that's a lemon. I'm surprised it happened to your 2018
Have had the same Key issue just start. Any feedback on why sometimes I cant unlock the door at the handle and have to use the remote to open door. Then sometimes sitting in the front seat and dash will read Key ID not recognized 😳
People forget ..🤣 oil light doesn't come on when you're low on oil it only comes on when it detects zero pressure from the pump itself 😭
Once that light 💡 goes on the damage was already done ✅ or If the wiring isn’t giving a good signal
Oil issue is real. I have knocking issues after an oil change and this car does something unexpectedly with oil. I now need a new engine with a car having plenty of oil, but metal shavings in my oil pan...do NOT buy this car. I change my oil on schedule and have do it for years. I put 6 qts in and had 4.2 when the knocking occurred. I now need a new engine.
Oil control solenoid is something that commonly gets clogged up and you end up messing up rod bearings check sonictuned write up on it.
I appreciate that my brother because I was thinking about buying AQ50 Within the last 2 weeks but now since I hear this I changed my mind good looking
That's why I rather get the 3.7 no issues for at least 200k miles lol
Agreed
@@BoostInMotion too much electronic crap ….. I hate these new cars that you can't work on and they make them throw away cars... they're too expensive to throw away!!!
@John Miller what year are this?
Zolitar Iglussey They’re very easy to work on still. Just a bit tedious.
My 2018 Q60 threw a check engine light at 2700 miles back in June. Evap system fault, apparently a hose underneath the car came undone. Infiniti reconnected it under warranty and its been fine since.
Have this check Engine from 10 000Km and 11 000Km for my 2017 Red Sport Q50. They changed the Evap Valve and the Gas cap. I Hope a never seen it again :P P0448
You probably Saveed me good money I’m shopping for Q50 3.7 but most of them are upper mileage so I wanted to get something low miles I see now that’s probably not gonna work out too well
That’s cap my belt went out on my 3.0t 2021 at 30k miles
HUH 2021s still have belt issues!!😮
2016 RS Q50 owner here, I just had mine sent to the shop for ignition coils, injectors, air fuel sensors, and plugs changed under warranty.
Warranty on a 16?
@@Skyler1100 Yeah, at the time of purchase, I still had warranty up to 60k
Wow...after watching this and reading the comments, I don't think I could take a chance on this car. There's nothing worse than having to take a car back to the dealer for issues and hoping they'll take care of you. It can be an especially big problem if you are modding it. I want to like these cars, but I really feel like Nissan/Infiniti quality is really dropping these days. Overall I must say I'm very happy with my Charger Scat Pack...no issues at 36k miles. I can't add power easily like with these turbo cars, but it's pretty quick stock and it never gives me any trouble. Gotta like that.
The 3.7 Q50 is better than the 3.0 turbo in my opinion. I would never buy the turbo but I love my 2014 Q50 3.7 awd...shes coming up on 100k
No issues here 2017 Q50 Rs AWD, 19k miles.
Ohhh man so much information, I was starting to worry saw oil in intakes not much just a lil in both thanks for the info.

2016 RS Here. AWD system failure. Car dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Pulled over. Still drivable. Infiniti dealer said wheel speed sensor. Also said so many failures that Infiniti was not prepared, back ordered part. Not sure if that’s the kind of issue you’re looking for.
From what I've learned in the early 2014 models had that similar issue. But I mainly talkin in regards to the engine itself
The serpentine belt on my 2016 busted on the 81 heading up to Hershey... was crazy in heavy traffic no more juice...

This engine will be going into the new Z. This is a concern. Now I’m having second thoughts about the purchase. Supra maybe the way to go.
Have a friend who’s a Master Tech for Toyota for over 20 years and he says their shop is ALWAYS full of Supra’s. Said it’s a total piece of garbage and he’s pretty sure Toyota regrets ever getting involved with BMW on it.
Don't forget the Q50s had oil sticks that were too long so all thought oil .even was fine but actually very low.
Excellent review! Hey can you do an Audi A5 sportback?
Add oil catch cans! To solve your pcv issues.
Lem Xiong why do you have to add something to your car when it’s the manufacturer’s flaw?
Too many issues ima get a rcf instead lol
Had some serious heat soak issues this past summer on my 18 Q60 RS400. No, I don't think the solution to the problem is to install bigger heat exchangers on a car worth 70k. for that kind of money this should not be an issue.
I just had to replace a shredded serpentine belt at 54,000 miles on my 2018 Q50 3.0t. A friend of mine did some research and sent me the service bulletin you mentioned. The service introduction date was November 2017…. I’m wondering if the early model 2018s may still have the same misaligned AC compressor.
All that spit 😂😂😂😂😂😂 , I have a q70 but I hope they would make a 3.7T

I had a 2016 Q50 3.0T and never and issue, I enjoyed it so much that I traded it in for a 2019 Q50S...love it even more! My original Q50 had nearly 60k miles. I originally owned a 2003 G20, boy have these cars changed!
Correction, I owned a 2002 G20, had the original sticker at home, 5 speed manual, 25k.
Nice
You are a very smart guy. Thank you for making this video. I have the first Ted sport (2016) and I had the motor already replaced...no oil :(
Then the brand new one after only 750 miles was down over half way on the dipstick, I can’t believe how fast it went down. PEOPLE, you need to pay attention to this problem! Also I’ve had misfires like crazy on the previous one, and also once since the new one.
This engine is still faster then anything in its class, more then anyone knows who hasn’t tuned it and opened it up
GREAT VIDEO BRO
I had the dreaded belt issue last week. The AC compressor is miss aligned. Caused the belt to creep forward and then shred. The belt took out my trans hose, two pulleys were damaged and a tensioner. This issue is legit and can be very catastrophic. It almost cost me the trans. Infiniti is aware and did replace everything under warranty but if it’s out of warranty and it causes the trans to go then the trans isn’t covered because the issue (the belt) which caused the trans to go isn’t covered. (If that makes sense) I highly recommend checking this routinely. I had it at the dealer three times prior to this issue and they still didn’t catch it so beware. I’m also FBO and tuned and the dealer didn’t say squat because they are aware of this reoccurring issue.
Bullitt 78 they likely won’t get that far. In very few cases I’ve seen the belts come off but most of them that come in are concerns of belt squeal. We loosen the compressor and move it back a few millimeters. It’s very unlikely these cars are going past the 60k mark without the concern being addressed
im a dealer i see the 3.0t all with bad eng. I pick up 2 of them and put motors on the mand both of them the engs went bad. the first one happend in 500 miles and lock up and the 2nd started knocking after 1700mil

Infiniti sent out a truck and towed my car to the dealer. put me in another car while mine was being fixed. they took good care of me. it is a known problem and nothing comes out of pocket. they will fix it for free and any other damages will be covered by your warranty.
Why did it shred itself
The issue I had was a Turbo went out,it blow alot of thick smoke had it in the shop runs good but have alot of concern
PVC shoes, or plastic polyvinyl chloride, is a type of plastic that provides a broad range of protection from chemicals.
Thanks for pointing out the issues..
Any Q50 3.0t here with over 100k+ miles that never had an issue? Looking to purchase one but no experience with Infiniti/Nissan. I come from Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura world (200k+ miles no issues, besides regular wear).
16 50RS 63k on it had a injector go out at 50 they replaced under warranty and I believe I'm developing the belt issue making some noise otherwise been a fantastic car
Great information. Pretty sure its call a PCV not PVC. But great information brother. Keep up the good work.
are the 2018 good cars???? I want to buy one now I’m freaking out lol
Did you buy one ?😂😂😂 I’m on the same boat
@@Wopdela.Bdid any of you buy one? 😂I’m looking now at one
If I'm buy a q50 don't do any racing just a family car should I buy a q50 3.0 or red Sport
At about 15K miles, I started hearing a squeeking noise that coincided with my timing belt. It happened to be only when it was super hot though (live in CA and it happened last summer). So, I went to the dealer and knew about the bulletin for the serpentine belt. Dealer was nice enough to replace the whole thing under warranty. No other issues though.
Correction - Serpentine belt, not timing belt. VR30DDTT engine has timing chains.
My ac while at idle gets warm when I'm driving it cold as heck I've already Replace the door actuator what else can be the problem
2019 Luxe 38k without any issues. JB4 installed the past 5k. The only issue was the stock run flats that popped at less than 5k. Frequent oil changes about every 5-6k.
Now at 47k no issues
King David thanks for the update
I was at 88k and my engine blew a day after a oil change. I really think it's the dealers negligence but they are claiming a piston blew. They are trying to charge me over 4 grand for a replacement engine. I'm really disappointed with Infiniti over this issue.
@@KingDavidPraiseYHWH what was the reason ?
@@KingDavidPraiseYHWH so what was the reason? i usually do my oil changes at 3k, It may be overkill but mine is heavily modified and I drive hard on it majority of the time because it’s so much fun.
Hope they fix this issue when they put the vr30 in 400z.
2016 q50 vr30tt 65,000 water pump leaking found it before it became a bad leak.. the pump itself leaked not the gasket..
I have a 2016 AWD Q50 3.0t Premium and shredded the drive belt at 40k and am currently having overheating issues at 57k miles. Factory warranty ends at 60k but extended warranty ends at 97k miles. Phew.
another reason i like the VQ37 better
Just replaced my engine on my 2017 q50 premium rwd
What was wrong with your engine
I just picked up a 2017 Q50 premium, non red sport. 100% stock with 31,000 mi. When I get on it I have a cool sounding whistle coming from the engine. I assume that whistle is the turbos. It's not anything crazy loud but you can hear it when you get on it. Is that an issue or 100% normal sound?
i currently have a 2018 infiniti q60 red sport with 25k miles and just had my head gasket replaced due to coolant in the cylinder head and that still has not fixed the coolant loss i am currently having. My car is sitting at the dealer right now and are thinking about an engine replacement.
I had that same issue they had my car for 3 months
@@deonrobinson644 I am currently getting a new engine. the dealer has no idea where the coolant is going. They think its a porous block so they did an oil analysis and it came back saying there is coolant mixing with oil
