  • Barry Lyndon 45th Anniversary Video Essay
This video looks back at arguably Stanley Kubrick’s least popular film "Barry Lyndon". It’s a beautifully realised movie that brings Kubrick’s unique worldview and vision to the period drama. Starring Ryan O’Neal as the roguish character of the title, Barry Lyndon is a sublime and mesmerising work of cinema that has never been rivalled and needs to be appreciated and held in the same esteem as the rest of Kubrick’s work. One of the most visionary and bold directors both in the subjects he tackled and as you highlighted, maintaining his artistic integrity.

"he would rather fail on his own terms or remove a film from circulation completely as he did with clockwork orange, than be held up to someone else's standards. perhaps that's why Kubrick's bold and singular work will last forever." This is pure fire. Stanley an all timer, one for the ages, a true original. This is an awesome series of videos thank you.

It's a visual masterpiece and criminally overlooked even by Kubrick fans.

How was it possible a film like this one to be made? It's so incredibly good!

It’s definitely a monumental achievement. Kubrick was astounding in his ability to bring infinite creativity to any genre.

For some reason I never liked Ryan O'Neal but Kubrick was a genius.

I’ve never really minded him, I always liked him in The Driver and I think Kubrick made good use of him in this.

@@MovieBirthdays I admire his work. He was one of the most popular movie stars of his generation. In the 1970's, he joined the ranks of Redford, Eastwood, Reynolds, I just for some reason never liked him.

For a long time I couldn’t accept this film; the end is too tragic for me: however I’ve given in to it nearly perfect movie to super appreciate it

It is hard to get beyond the surface and very deliberate pacing, but it’s a powerful film that becomes deeper with each viewing.

You ended on the greatest film edit in history. Another eyeopening and thought provoking piece. I might add, S.K was also motivated to removed A Clock Work Orange due to the fact he and his family received a ticking parcel in the post. The bomb squad later revealed it was an orange that had been made in to a working clock!

Possibly the best filmmaker of all time and Barry Lyndon was for many years the most underrated Kubrick film. Not being a fan of costume and period dramas, it surprises me that this is my favourite Kubrick film. A beautifully made and astoundingly told film that brilliantly depicts the greed and hypocrisies of 18th Century high society, through beauty, expression and music, that gives way to a cynical worldview, as demonstrated in the epilogue, all becomes equal when they are dead. Not to mention it is perfectly paced. The film truly is the very cinematic definition of actions speaking louder than words. One of the best films of all time. Cannot believe Pinocchio of all the tales has subconsciously influence on many films.

I’m not a fan of period dramas either so kept away from this one for a while to. Needless to say that it doesn’t disappoint a thoroughly modern film that set a new standard in tackling historical films which we can see in The Favourite or Phantom Thread. There’s an attitude in that makes it so anarchic and irony that adds fun to the melancholic tale.
