It says 60mph on the box...will it do it?
I take it straight out of the box and try it on 2S and 3S to see how fast it goes.
But then - there is an alternate pinion in the box - they must WANT us to put it on there! :)
I then take it from 18T to 20T pinion that is in the box and test again.

Nice video!!, I have one coming this week. I have one of the Povway 2s it’s a good battery but it just does not have the umph the Spektrum battery has. For the money their a great battery. I had to balance my cells in the Povway it helped a bit. Yours will go faster, I am sure. Heck 53 is still blazing fast and I really enjoy your content. Keep up the great work!!

Yes - I think the Povways are generally good batteries, but just not quite strong enough for how much this ESC wants to pull.

Just took my Vorteks out fir the 1st time, I’m getting 51 mph with the 18 tooth pinion on Proline Avenger HP belted 1/8 buggy tires. I haven’t played with the 20 tooth yet but great video 🙏🏿.

Once you take the cover off to change the pinion it looks like the spur is only supported on one side so It would seem that getting the perfect gear mesh would involve a little bit of luck. Truck is awesome though. Great video as always Troy !
You are 100% correct. Have to make sure to hold the spur assembly in place.

Lol, well, your lucky your wife likes rc’s. Mine hates them, and my basement looks worse then Kevin Talbots collection. I made a pink brushless typhon for my daughter. I actually for the first time, like the pink Vortex. I didn’t want to get it but after seeing Thunder rc approve it. I’m going to pick one up today.

Nice video. That’s weird that you only gained 3 mph. I got a 20 tooth for my 4s Typhon and I’m going to do a video on that soon, will be curious to see how fast I can get going on 4s🤔
I agree - I really think my 3S just doesn't have the true C-rating to really pull that gear.

That was very interesting. 3mph faster isn't a lot at all! It was a great video surprised how well it backflipped on 3s! When you changed the pinion, what did you pull off of it before you actually pulled the pinion off? I didn't see it in my senton. It may just be a new upgrade. Is it the new safe-D pinions?
Agree - 3mph is not much. I am more and more convinced my battery just couldn't pull the higher gear.
Yes - it has the safe-d pinion with the e-clip on it.
It can go 60 mph. It might be a battery issue. Other people I have watched have been getting '60s.

20 years when I started out I always thought it was just the engine and that battery quality was about how long the car can run
I have same battery in 3s and 6s they are not bad for a budget battery. I also picked couple much higher cost spectrum 100c 3s and they are really good with many cycles still have all cells holding at 1 ea cell for resistant that's worth gold I also see about 3 to 4 mph increase on speed runs just need to take a deep breath when they have a have a higher cost

I got mine yesterday and I had to bind it right out of the box. I think Arrma forgot to do it on mine. Until I get more comfortable with mine the 20 pinion gear will remain in it's bag. I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to ground vehicles. What is the C rating on your battery? Mine is a 100C and on 3S with the stock gear I got 55 MPH.

Yes - I believe mine was listed as a 50C, so that might explain it.
I had to bind mine too. Also I'm annoyed that you have to disable AVC if you want to adjust the steering dual rate.

I know this Video is a year old now, but getting the Vorteks up to top speed is really quite easy:
1) Get a really good battery and charge it full. The battery I use is the : Gens ace 6800mAh 11.1V 120C 3S1P Lipo Battery Pack with EC5-Bashing Series.
2) Do the speed run immediately after having installed the freshly charged battery, as this is when it has the maximum voltage.
3) Turn AVC OFF! If you don't, this will have seriously BAD effect on your top speed as well as stability.
4) Make sure there is no grit/ dust in your Motor assembly. You know between spur and pinion gear. Take it apart, clean it out.
5) You will need space! Long straight roads are best.
6) Try and stay at your max speed for about 3 seconds minimum, for your GPS to get a good read
My result: 91 Km/h on the stock 18T pinion gear. Thats 56,54 MPH. I have not tried the 20T yet. I am pretty sure I can get it to 60 MPH on the 20T though.

Wow I've only been running 2s stock gearing for the couple months I've had the truck and been having a blast with it. After watching this I think I'm going to finally cave and go buy a 3s battery lol.
If I switch out to the 20T gear,will that make it run hotter? Just curious cause I've seen some vids where the motor failed on these
Yes - running a bigger gear will result in more heat. Just be careful with it.
What app are you using on the phone to record the speed and do I have to install something inside the truck to be able to record the speed ?

I'm looking to get one. I know what speed is because i have the JLB Cheetah 21101 120amp.
This car has been loud since day one. Hasn't stripped a gear or anything...and has actually gotten quieter...

I got mine to 65 i use the spectrum g2 battery 100c 5,000 mah literally speed machine for its size!

Hey did you ever find a fix on the short run time for your vorteks? I feel like my lvc is getting triggered after a few punch 5 blasts. It's frustrating only being able to use the truck for 5 minutes at a time. And the 3s spektrum lipos I'm using are all healthy/few cycles on them.
I was reading a forum post saying the easiest fix was to move to a lower tooth pinion.
Thoughts?
The solution I found was to upgrade batteries.
Example: POVWAY 50c batteries triggered LVC frequently. POVWAY 80C batteries didn't.
Fresh batteries, higher c-rating fixed the whole situation for me.
I have heard some folks saying they contacted Horizon and they actually sent them a new ESC.

I just got one, what average run time where you getting on 3s? I’m getting like 10min is that average?
It all depends on the quality of your battery. With my cheaper batteries, maybe the 10min. Better batteries (higher C-rating, better quality) give me much longer.

Vorteks is the best everything Arrma. You even get a DX3 AVC radio!

@@RoadsideRC well I take the radio and use it in my on road cars. With a regular radio it runs straight and true. It really shines with the BigRock arms and links, the wide stance is killer!
All of the many speed runs I have seen with the Vorteks on 18t pinion have got 54/55 mph stock. On the 20t pinion was 58/60 mph.
This leads me more to think my 3S might be weak.
I run mine with T20 gear and 100cc 8000mAh battery and it rips definitely doing 60mph easy lol

The one in the truck was labeled either 50C or 80C...but I tend to really struggle trusting what is written on there...
Vorteks is advertised as 60+mph. Did you check your c rating against the manual? Motor can only pull what the battery can deliver.
C ratings on batteries are also not regulated and could be over rated.

lets say it is a 2000kv motor. Thats 2000 revolutions per volt per minute... The jump you get going from 8,4V (2s) to 12,6 volts is way higher than the two teeth difference in pinion.... we are talking 2000x8,4V = 16,800 rpm to 2000x12,6V = 25,200 rpm. Thats a 8,400 rpm difference....
Your motor can pull it... the question is if the motor gets too hot or whether the ESC is overloaded if pushing the envelope....
What I am saying is that the voltage is the real kicker, not so much a slight change in pinion ratios....
I have a electric converted T-maxx with a 2250KV motor and a 150A esc... On 6S thats 56,700 rpm... And I can barely keep the front wheels down when driving it.... The calculated topspeed on my rig, taking the gearing, diffs and wheel size into consideration is around 70mph topspeed.... but the torque from a standstill is insane... So I usually run it on 4S where I get a perfekt mix of speed and torque...
Yes - I 100% agree that the jump in voltage is bigger deal than the jump in 2 teeth.
These are simple the gears and choices you have with this truck out of the box, so I am showing what the difference is.
Still - 18T to 20T on 3S, I really expected a larger difference than I saw. Others have gotten closer to 60mph, so I expect my battery might not be strong enough.
Probably battery, but perfect on 2s with gear change. Thing looks like a Granite with the shell off.
It is very close to a Granite with the shell off.
In my live stream unboxing, I set the Granite, Vorteks, and Typhon side-by-side and compared them. Shocks, shock towers, and the electronics are the big difference.
What is the discharge on those batteries?
They are 50C, I also have them in 80C that works really well.
Why didn't you use Loctite you always use Loctite on pinion grub screws
I do always use loctite...unless it is temporary.
I guessed 57mph 3S bigger gearing.
